1. Goku and Vegeta
10 Kiritsugu and Kirei from Fate Zero
Fate Zero, prequel series to Fate/Stay Night, chronicles another Holy Grail War, a modern-day clash between magi and the historical figures they summon as each magi/Heroic Spirit duo competes for the wish-granting Grail.
Protagonist Kiritsugu Emiya is cunning and ruthless, determined to win the Grail and use it to end the world’s pain. However, he finds himself unable to predict the moves of opponent Kirei Kotomine, who himself is impressed by Kiritsugu, leading to a mutual interest and rivalry between the two. The resulting battles distort the lines of good and evil while offering engaging action, and I’d highly recommend this series to older audiences
9. Meliodas and Ban from Seven Deadly Sins
Meliodas and Ban are both members of the Seven Deadly Sins. He is extremely friendly with Ban and they have friendly fights frequently. They are very competitive and enjoy challenging each other at arm wrestling. Despite being great companions, Meliodas easily became angered when Ban tried to steal his sword. When Ban accepted the request from the Goddess Clan to kill him, Meliodas was annoyed at Ban’s reckless nature for accepting this, especially during their bad situation.
However, once he found out the reason behind this, Meliodas accepted his death by Ban as he knows how he feels and might have done the same thing if he would’ve been in his situation. After their problems are sorted out, Ban and Meliodas return to their friendly relationship and respect each other highly.
8. Midoriya and Bakugo from My Hero Academia
Izuku and Katsuki have known each other since their childhood, but their relationship has deteriorated over the years (though interestingly enough, Izuku continues to call Katsuki by his childhood nickname, “Kacchan”). Ever since failing to develop a Quirk as a child, while Katsuki developed his, the latter has seen Izuku as weak and bullied him relentlessly, giving him the derogatory nickname “Deku.
Since the fight, the two better understand each other and have become more reminiscent to that of a proper “friendly” rivalry, though they are still at odds due to their clashing personalities and overall shaky history with each other.
7. Lelouch & Suzaku from Code Geass
Suzaku Kururugi is the first and last true friend Lelouch had ever had. Lelouch trusts and has faith in him more than anyone else (excluding Nunnally) in the world. He is even willing to go down on his knees to beg him to protect Nunnally because Suzaku is the only person he could trust and find help in, despite the fact that they were already enemies at that time. Lelouch was also hurt deeply when Suzaku decided to turn him into the emperor and when he thought Suzaku had betrayed him again in the Kururugi Shrine.
They had many faces offs and Lelouch often could not bring himself to hurt Suzaku after finding out that Suzaku is the pilot of Lancelot and tried time and again to get Suzaku to join his side. Suzaku is also the only person aside from Nunnally whom Lelouch is unwilling to use Geass upon–even when he did, he did not order Suzaku to obey him or join his side, but to “live on.”
6. Ichigo and Grimmjow from Bleach
There are many characters within Bleach that could be considered rivals for Ichigo, but Grimmjow stands out above the rest. While Grimmjow is a bloodthirsty individual with a strong lust for battle, he also has a strong code of honor, going as far as to heal Ichigo in order to have a fair fight against him. Ichigo’s battle against Grimmjow also put (at the time) Ichigo’s abilities to the test, a fight that ultimately leaves the two with respect for each other.
5. Natsu and Gray from Fairy Tail
Natsu and Gray are both members of the guild Fairy Tail, where they are both put onto Team Natsu. Most of their time together as teammates is spent looking for excuses to fight. They spend time insulting each other and generally have a disdain for each other’s magic (Natsu being a fire user and Gray utilizing ice). Their relationship has improved over time, but these are two anime rivals who are probably going to fight forever.
4. Zoro and Sanji from One Piece
Zoro is always shown to compete with Sanji and getting into fights with each other over petty matters, often at inopportune moments. They had some early disagreements with each other during the Arlong Park Arc on how to deal with Nami’s alleged betrayal. During this disagreement, Sanji mocked Zoro’s defeat at the hands of Mihawk to which Zoro threatened to slice off Sanji’s head but their back-and-forth relationship officially began on Little Garden.
Zoro trusts that Sanji will protect the weaker members of the crew, as seen in Zou when the Sunny crew was missing and Usopp together with Franky was worried. Zoro stated, “Curly Brows was with them the entire time he wouldn’t let anything happen”. Despite Sanji and Zoro’s rivalry, it can be noted that they work well together as a team, as emphasized by their fight against Hamburg, Pickles and Big Pan.
3. Naruto and Sasuke from Naruto
Naruto’s relationship with Sasuke Uchiha was the highlight of the majority of his life. Their relationship was complicated, especially due to the circumstances of their ancestors’ feud, dating back to the beginning of Shinobi
Naruto and Sasuke have been rivals from the time they first met, even if it did take some time for each of them to acknowledge the other as a true rival. Their rivalry has gone through multiple evolutions over the years, with these two ninjas being both friends, foes, and somewhere in-between as time has passed.
2. L and Light Yagami from Death Note.
When the Death Note – a book that kills anyone whose name is written into it – came into the possession of Light Yagami, he decided to use this power to reshape the world in his image. As the body count began to rise and the police scratched their heads over the murders conducted by the killer they called Kira, a detective simply knew as ‘L’ appeared. Dedicated to solving any mystery, the world’s deadliest game of cat and mouse soon ensued.
Both characters have amazing development and personality and are from Death Note, one of the best animes of all time. Plus their relationship is so interesting, L is trying to put Light behind bars and Light despises anyone that gets in his way of creating a new world, but at the same time, L is probably the only character in the show that Light may have seen as a friend. And all of the “battles” are so epic.
1. Goku and Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z
Goku and Vegeta grew up in very different backgrounds. Being an elite and the Prince of all Saiyans no less, Vegeta was brought up to believe no other Saiyan could beat him. Even at a young age, Vegeta’s power surpassed that of his father’s, the King. This belief that no one was stronger naturally made Vegeta overconfident.
Goku and Vegeta being at the top of this list should not be a surprise to anyone. These two are perhaps the most famous of all anime rivals and have been butting heads – literally and figuratively – for over 25 years. With each of the two last surviving members of the Saiyan race striving to be the strongest fighter, their rivalry is sure to last well after the series ends as one of the most memorable aspects of this famous anime series. These two, who are almost the opposite of each other, are the driving force behind Dragon Ball Z and their relationship’s development is an important part of the series.
