10. Allison to Lillia

Allison to LilliaSynopsis – Set in a continent divided into two commonwealths that have been engaged in war for hundreds of years, Allison and Will go on a mission to search “the treasure that will put an end to the war”. Their hope is inherited to their daughter Lillia, who strives to thaw the torn nations into a united country. This anime encourages young generations to believe in a world without hatred or war regardless of nationalities and beliefs.

Similarity – Both Violet Evergarden and Allison to Lillia are story about war. What unique about both of them, that is most of the time, the war is on the backround. Most of the time, the main characters (Aliison and Violet) do not take part in the war, and the story is about how the world deals with how the war effects the daily life of the common people.

9. Gosick

GosickSynopsis – GOSICK takes place in 1924 in a small, made-up European country of Sauville. The story centers on Kazuya Kujo, the third son of a Japanese Imperial soldier, who is a transfer student to St. Marguerite Academy, where urban legends and horror stories are all the rage. There he meets Victorique, a mysterious yet beautiful and brilliant girl who never comes to class and spends her days reading the entire content of the library or solving mysteries that even detectives can’t solve.

Similarity – Both give a similar vibe…
– Both take place in an earlier time during a war…
– Both protagonists (Violet & Victorica) come to terms with their feelings as the series goes on…
– Similar art style
– Both series are a masterpiece from a story and art point of view

8. Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji)

Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)Synopsis – In Victorian-era London, on the night of Ciel Phantomhive’s tenth birthday a fire destroyed his manor and killed both of his parents. In a moment of death Ceil strikes a deal with a demon, his soul in exchange for revenge. This demon becomes his butler and calls himself by name of Sebastian Michaelis, to protect and serve Ciel until the deal has been completed. One month after the fire Ciel returns from being missing, with his new butler Sebastian. Ceil is now the head of the Phantomhive corporation, handling all business affairs as well as the work as the Queen of England’s guard dog and looking for his parents murders.

Similarity – Both have the core theme of a child/youth learning the basics of human life and the world after being released from an institutionalized unhealthy environment they were raised in, having being used merely as an object. By following the protagonists’ journeys in becoming more human, the shows explore the question of what it means to be so.

7. Death Parade

Death ParadeSynopsis – After death, there is no heaven or hell, only a bar that stands between reincarnation and oblivion. There the attendant will, one after another, challenge pairs of the recently deceased to a random game in which their fate of either ascending into reincarnation or falling into the void will be wagered. Whether it’s bowling, darts, air hockey, or anything in between, each person’s true nature will be revealed in a ghastly parade of death and memories, dancing to the whims of the bar’s master. Welcome to Quindecim, where Decim, arbiter of the afterlife, awaits. Death Parade expands upon the original one-shot intended to train young animators. It follows yet more people receiving judgment—until a strange, black-haired guest causes Decim to begin questioning his own rulings.

Similarity – Both protagonists are reserved, professional, and almost ethereal beings who eventually learn how to empathize with human emotion properly. You won’t get the same soft slice-of-life feel with Death Parade, as it is fantasy/horror/comedy, but you’ll get the same satisfaction out of the character depth and story flow.

6. Kobato.

kobatoSynopsis – Sweet and naïve Hanato Kobato came to Earth on a mission to collect and fill a bottle with “konpeito,” which appear after healing a person’s heart that is suffering. Kobato collects these because it is her wish to go to a certain place. Despite her strangeness, Kobato turns out to be well-suited for this mission as her heartfelt sincerity in helping others earns her the love and admiration of everyone she meets. However, she is not allowed to fall in love with anyone whose heart she heals.

Similarity – I’m amazed that Violet Evergarden reminded me of Kobato. In both series there is a female character in the main role helping out other people that they come close with during their travels. Main characters are kind of opposite in their personality but they are earnest and that’s nice to see what they learn.

5. The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Mahoutsukai no Yome)

Mahoutsukai no Yome (The Ancient Magus' Bride)

Synopsis – Chise Hatori, a 15-year-old Japanese girl, was sold for five million pounds at an auction to a tall masked gentleman. Abandoned at a young age and ridiculed by her peers for her unconventional behavior, she was ready to give herself to any buyer if it meant having a place to go home to. After a brief confrontation and a bit of teleportation magic, the two open their eyes to Elias’ picturesque cottage in rural England. Greeted by fairies and surrounded by weird and wonderful beings upon her arrival, these events mark the beginning of Chise’s story as the apprentice and supposed bride of the ancient magus.

Similarity – Since Amagami follows the structure of the galge it based on, you might find it enjoyable to watch The World God Only Knows, which makes fun of a galge cliche characters. Both also focus on particular romance story arcs, although The World God Only Knows is a linear story, while Amagami is playing out each possible story arc you can play through in the game.

4. Natsume’s Book of Friends (Natsume Yuujinchou)

Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume's Book of Friends)Synopsis – While most fifteen-year-old boys, in one way or another, harbor secrets that are related to girls, Takashi Natsume has a peculiar and terrifying secret involving youkai: for as long as he can remember, he has been constantly chased by these spirits. Natsume soon discovers that his deceased grandmother Reiko had passed on to him the Yuujinchou, or “Book of Friends,” which contains the names of the spirits whom she brought under her control. Now in Natsume’s possession, the book gives Reiko’s grandson this power as well, which is why these enraged beings now haunt him in hopes of somehow attaining their freedom.

Similarity – Both series have the formula of tackling a specific character per episode. The magic of both lies in the power of the viewer sympathizing for that character in a mere 22 minutes. Ranges from heart-warming to straight up sadness. A must watch!

3. Mushishi

MushishiSynopsis – “Mushi”: the most basic forms of life in the world. They exist without any goals or purposes aside from simply “being.” They are beyond the shackles of the words “good” and “evil.” Mushi can exist in countless forms and are capable of mimicking things from the natural world such as plants, diseases, and even phenomena like rainbows. This is, however, just a vague definition of these entities that inhabit the vibrant world of Mushishi, as to even call them a form of life would be an oversimplification. Detailed information on Mushi is scarce because the majority of humans are unaware of their existence. So what are Mushi and why do they exist? This is the question that a “Mushishi,” Ginko, ponders constantly. Mushishi are those who research Mushi in hopes of understanding their place in the world’s hierarchy of life.

Similarity – They explore the meaning of living, both physically and mentally, and highlight the importance of friendships and connections. Although they are set in completely different times, they centralise on the development of human emotion and understanding of circumstance, the effect of history and righting the past.

2. Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso)

Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso)Synopsis – Music accompanies the path of the human metronome, the prodigious pianist Kousei Arima. But after the passing of his mother, Saki Arima, Kousei falls into a downward spiral, rendering him unable to hear the sound of his own piano. Two years later, Kousei still avoids the piano, leaving behind his admirers and rivals, and lives a colorless life alongside his friends Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryouta Watari. However, everything changes when he meets a beautiful violinist, Kaori Miyazono, who stirs up his world and sets him on a journey to face music agai

Similarity – Both have an amazing, emotional, slice of life storyline backed by phenomenal scores, and the animation for them is among the best I’ve ever seen. Both are examples of a love it or hate it anime, but if you enjoyed one, I’m almost positive you will also enjoy the other.

1. Plastic Memories

Plastic MemoriesSynopsis – Eighteen-year-old Tsukasa Mizugaki has failed his college entrance exams, but after pulling some strings, he manages to land a job at the Sion Artificial Intelligence Corporation. SAI Corp is responsible for the creation of “Giftias”—highly advanced androids which are almost indiscernible from normal humans. However, unlike humans, Giftias have a maximum lifespan of 81,920 hours, or around nine years and four months. Terminal Service One, the station Tsukasa was assigned to, is responsible for collecting Giftias that have met their expiration date, before they lose their memories and become hostile.

Similarity – Both series involve emotionless-like humans (android in Plastic Memories) going on a ‘journey’ to discover true emotions. While they both revolve around discovering the feeling of love, Plastic Memories explores it through actual romantic relationships whereas Violet Evergarden explores it through experiencing other people’s emotions
