1. Your Name(Kimi no Na wa)

Boku dake ga Inai Machi (ERASED)
Synopsis – When tragedy is about to strike, Satoru Fujinuma finds himself sent back several minutes before the accident occurs. The detached, 29-year-old manga artist has taken advantage of this powerful yet mysterious phenomenon, which he calls “Revival,” to save many lives.

However, when he is wrongfully accused of murdering someone close to him, Satoru is sent back to the past once again, but this time to 1988, 18 years in the past. Soon, he realizes that the murder may be connected to the abduction and killing of one of his classmates, the solitary and mysterious Kayo Hinazuki, that took place when he was a child. This is his chance to make things right.

Boku dake ga Inai Machi follows Satoru in his mission to uncover what truly transpired 18 years ago and prevent the death of his classmate while protecting those he cares about in the present.

Similarity –Both these series play with the idea of time travel and its consequences. Both deal with interpersonal relationships as well as the loss of a loved one really well. Honestly, both had me on an emotional roller coaster and were good at investing the viewer into their world. They reminded me of each other not only plot-wise, but atmosphere-wise as well. If you like one, try the other.

9. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Synopsis – One cold Christmas day, Kyon heads over to school and the SOS Brigade’s holiday celebration, only to realize that Haruhi Suzumiya seems to have disappeared. Moreover, no one even remembers her or the SOS Brigade; Mikuru Asahina knows nothing and is now afraid of him, and Itsuki Koizumi has also gone missing. The Literature Club, formed only by an uncharacteristically shy Yuki Nagato, now occupies the old SOS club room.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu is based on the fourth light novel of the acclaimed Haruhi series and is set after the events of the anime series. Not uncultured in the supernatural, Kyon will have to deal with his whole life turned upside down like a bad joke, and maybe it’s better that way.

Similarity –Both have time travelers. Both deal with a group of highschool students as well as a supernatural factor (particularly time travel). I found both animes had likeable characters and a unique plot. If your into coming of age stories with a twist on the supernatural, with interesting characters than you will most likely like these two animes.

8. The Place Promised in Our Early Days

Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no BashoSynopsis- In an alternate-reality 1974 Japan, the country is split, with the southern islands controlled by America and the northern lands claimed by the Soviet Union. Hokkaido, referred to as Ezo in Kumo no Mukou Yakusoku no Basho, decides to construct a tower into the sky designed by Ekusun Tsukinoe.

By 1996, Hokkaido Tower’s construction is complete and three students of Aomori have big dreams concerning this tower. Hiroki Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa are considered child prodigies, and both harbor romantic feelings for Sayuri Sawatari, though neither of them would dare admit it.

When a drone crashes down, the two boys resolve to repair it and fly to the top of Hokkaido Tower. Assisting them is their boss at the military plant, Mr. Okabe. They name the drone Bella Ciela, but before their dreams of flying it are realized, Sayuri vanishes. Unbeknownst to them, her disappearance is related closely to the tower that the two dream of reaching.

Similarity – The friendship between the 3 main characters in this reminded me of the girl who leapt through time, obviously the place promised is much more serious. A wonderful coming of age series for fans who enjoy watching movies on weekends; both of these two movies are good examples of such. Both of these movies have a great touching, compelling story that can be understood and be related in many people’s views. With a well crafted plot, the feelings of both of these movies are also quite similar.
There’s also that surreal atmosphere mixed in with comedy, drama, and romance.

7. The Tatami Galaxy

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy)Synopsis – One autumn evening at a mysterious ramen stand behind the Shimogamo Shrine, a lonely third-year college student bumps into a man with an eggplant-shaped head who calls himself a god of matrimony. Meeting this man causes the student to reflect upon his past two years at college—two years bitterly spent trying to break up couples on campus with his only friend Ozu, a ghoulish-looking man seemingly set on making his life as miserable as possible. Resolving to make the most out of the rest of his college life, the student attempts to ask out the unsociable but kind-hearted underclassman Akashi, yet fails to follow through, prompting him to regret not living out his college life differently. As soon as this thought passes through his head, however, he is hurtled through time and space to the beginning of his years at college and given another chance to live his life.

Surreal, artistic, and mind-bending, Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei chronicles the misadventures of a young man on a journey to make friends, find love, and experience the rose-colored campus life he always dreamed of.

Similarity – In both movies, the protagonists are teenagers who repeat their youthful days over and over again in order to achieve better result of their activities in life.
If you like or want to taste more time travel stories, then these movies are for you.

6. Wolf Children

Synopsis – Hana, a hard-working college student, falls in love with a mysterious man who attends one of her classes though he is not an actual student. As it turns out, he is not truly human either. On a full moon night, he transforms, revealing that he is the last werewolf alive. Despite this, Hana’s love remains strong, and the two ultimately decide to start a family.

Hana gives birth to two healthy children—Ame, born during rainfall, and Yuki, born during snowfall—both possessing the ability to turn into wolves, a trait inherited from their father. All too soon, however, the sudden death of her lover devastates Hana’s life, leaving her to raise a peculiar family completely on her own. The stress of raising her wild-natured children in a densely populated city, all while keeping their identity a secret, culminates in a decision to move to the countryside, where she hopes Ame and Yuki can live a life free from the judgments of society. Wolf Children is the heartwarming story about the challenges of being a single mother in an unforgiving modern world.

Similarity – Same Director, nice flowing feel to the movies. Colorful, dynamic scenes with likeable characters with a sense of nostalgia, and working against the odds through normal life with a small, but central supernatural element that is not overpowered and does not stand out.

4. Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom?

Uchiage Hanabi, Shita kara Miru ka? Yoko kara Miru ka?
Synopsis – It’s summer, and Norimichi Shimada and his friends want to know if fireworks look round or flat from the side. They forge a plan to find the answer at Moshimo Festival’s fireworks display. However, Norimichi finds himself conflicted when his classmate, Nazuna Oikawa, plans to run away from home and wants Norimichi to join her. When things go awry in their attempt to escape, a strange orb in Nazuna’s possession gives them another chance at staying together.

Similarity – The storyline and the argument is more or less the same: young person suddenly can travel in time and mess up heavily. ‘Toki wo..’ feels a bit more fresh even being older and has better characters, but ‘Uchiage Hanabi..’ can be a good anime to watch if you need more of this. Also art is wonderful.

3. 5 Centimeters Per Second

romance anime movies

As years pass by, they continue down their own paths, their distance slowly growing wider and their contact with one another fades. Yet, they keep remembering one another and the times they have shared together, wondering if they will have the chance to meet once again.

Similarity – A great love story is what brings Toki wo and 5 cm together. Each involves love between people who are not yet adult but are not children, platonic love, and pure feelings between pure souls. You’ll enjoy the romantic atmosphere that permeates through both titles.

2. Steins;Gate

steins gateSynopsis – The self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintarou Okabe rents out a room in a rickety old building in Akihabara, where he indulges himself in his hobby of inventing prospective “future gadgets” with fellow lab members: Mayuri Shiina, his air-headed childhood friend, and Hashida Itaru, a perverted hacker nicknamed “Daru.” The three pass the time by tinkering with their most promising contraption yet, a machine dubbed the “Phone Microwave,” which performs the strange function of morphing bananas into piles of green gel.

Though miraculous in itself, the phenomenon doesn’t provide anything concrete in Okabe’s search for a scientific breakthrough; that is, until the lab members are spurred into action by a string of mysterious happenings before stumbling upon an unexpected success—the Phone Microwave can send emails to the past, altering the flow of history.

Adapted from the critically acclaimed visual novel by 5pb. and Nitroplus, Steins;Gate takes Okabe through the depths of scientific theory and practicality. Forced across the diverging threads of past and present, Okabe must shoulder the burdens that come with holding the key to the realm of time.

Similarity – Both Animes deal with Time Traveling and its consequences. Both shows try to portrait how one battles against this idea of FATE using the methods of Time Traveling. Both shows have concepts dealing with Tragedy, romance, and comedy and are both masterfully done.
