However, Subaru immediately reawakens to a familiar scene confronted by the same group of thugs, meeting Satella all over again the enigma deepens as history inexplicably repeats itself.

Similarity – Delivers where Sword Art Online does not; Re:Zero is a personal journey dealing with death anxiety, so much so that the protagonist sometimes descends into madness. It more accurately captures an ‘RPG’ dynamic, with respawning actually being a thing, which actually makes the series even more devastating. Also features a more reasonable ‘ leveling-up’ of the main character meaning there is a genuine struggle.

9. Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions)

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions)Synopsis – Fear, survival, instinct. It is now up to this ragtag group of unlikely fighters to survive together in a world where life and death are separated only by a fine line.

Similarity – A group of people is thrown into a fantasy world from which they cannot escape and must fight to find a way to survive. Though comedic at times, the plot is relatively serious and focuses on battles, life and death, and the bonds between characters. Both are also by A-1 Pictures, so their art styles are somewhat similar.

8. Zero no Tsukaima (The Familiar of Zero)

Wild, adventurous, and explosive, Zero no Tsukaima follows Saito as he comes to terms with his new life and as Louise proves that there is more to her than her nickname suggests.

Similarity – The lead characters from both series fall in love and fight together along with a few other companions. The main protagonist finds himself dragged into a world very different from his own. Both take place in a fantasy environment. Both have a lot of romance, action (including sword fights), and comedy.

In this strange land where the very idea of humanity is reduced to child’s play, the indifferent genius gamer duo of Sora and Shiro have finally found a real reason to keep playing games: to unite the sixteen races of Disboard, defeat Tet, and become the gods of this new, gaming-is-everything world.

Similarity – Nonsocial characters in both animes. They play games in order to win. In both anime main characters’ boredom lead them to other worlds. 3. Accel World

Accel World
