10. Yumekui Merry (Dream Eater Merry)

Yumekui Merry (Dream Eater Merry)
Synopsis – Yumekui Merry begins with Yumeji Fujiwara, a seemingly average high school student. But ten years ago, Yumeji gained the ability to see the dream auras of other people around him. This ability allows Yumeji to predict what type of dreams people are likely to have next. The dreams of others may not be a mystery to Yumeji, but his own dreams have recently left him puzzled. In dream after dream, Yumeji has been pursued by an army of cats lead by John Doe, who claims he needs Yumeji’s body to enter the real world.

Similarity – The art looks pretty similar and the partnership quality of the characters!! They are just really alike! Even the name is kinda the same yumekui means dream EATER and then SOUL EATER! Its the same style and a weird, twisted story. If you liked the art and animation of Soul Eater, then you will most likely enjoy Yumekui Merry.

9. Durarara!!

DurararaSynopsis – Ryūgamine Mikado is a boy who longs for the exciting life of the big city. At the invitation of his childhood friend Masaomi, he transfers to a school in Ikebukuro. Masaomi has warned him about people he doesn’t want to cross in the city: a champion fighter, an informant, and a mysterious gang called “Dollars.”
Nervous from Masaomi’s stories, Mikado witnesses an urban legend on his first day in the city, the Headless Rider astride a black motorcycle. From then on, the existence of supernatural cases and a gang called the Yellow Scarves will rise to the surface, and Ikebukuro will be pushed to the breaking point.

Similarity – Celty has a death scythe and so is the other characters of “soul eater”. It also has that same feel because its also a bit Gothic and a little weird and scary. Once you watch Soul Eater you should also watch Durarara! because these two are both good and awesome anime!

8. Zombie-Loan

Zombie LoanSynopsis – Michiru Kita is a special girl who possesses Shinigami Eyes, which allows her to see a dark ring around a person’s neck. This ring symbolizes the person’s impending death; once they are marked to die, a gray line, which is invisible to normal people, appears on their neck, and once the ring turns completely black, the person dies.
Chika Akatsuki and Shito Tachibana, two boys in her class, both have black rings around their necks, but to her surprise, they are not yet dead. It is revealed that after a tragic accident that was supposed to kill them both, the two boys made a deal with a secret loan office called the Zombie-Loan. In return for keeping them alive, the two have to hunt zombies for the loan office. When Michiru gets involved with them, she finds that her life has just become more complicated.

Similarity – Each series has a drawing tale, but they’re mild types of horror which one may watch in a dark room, whereas others you really shouldn’t. I love the female protagonists of both series, as neither give up. Comparable beyond that they are not, for one is a tough female who gets herself out of trouble, and the other your clumsy damsel in distress. The plots are also unique and made me want to find more like them.

7. Pandora Hearts

Pandora HeartsSynopsis – To young Oz Vessalius, heir to the Vessalius Duke House, the perilous world called the Abyss is nothing more than a folktale used to scare misbehaving children. However, when Oz’s coming-of-age ceremony is interrupted by the malicious Baskerville Clan intent on banishing him into the depths of the Abyss, the Vessalius heir realizes that his peaceful life of luxury is at its end. Now, he must confront the world of the Abyss and its dwellers, the monstrous “Chains,” which are both not quite as fake as he once believed.

Similarity – Both series have often creepy atmosphere, good and well-developed characters, good mix of humor and drama, girls with Scythes, cool-headed male leads, interesting monsters, insane villains and are great at storytelling (in a different style and with different topics, tough)… and there are even more similarities. If you have watched one of these shows, it is highly recommended to watch the other as well!

6. Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)

Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)
Synopsis – Young Ciel Phantomhive is known as “the Queen’s Guard Dog,” taking care of the many unsettling events that occur in Victorian England for Her Majesty. Aided by Sebastian Michaelis, his loyal butler with seemingly inhuman abilities, Ciel uses whatever means necessary to get the job done. But is there more to this black-clad butler than meets the eye?

Similarity – Kuroshitsuji is based in England in the 19th century while Soul Eater is in another world altogether, but both have fantasy elements that verge on the dark side (for Kuroshitsuji it’s demons and for Soul Eater it’s witches and black blood). Last but not least they both have great casts of likable characters and both series feature beautiful animation in their own respective styles.

5. Erementar Gerad (Elemental Gelade)

Erementar Gerad (Elemental Gelade)
Synopsis – After a routine raid, the rookie sky pirate Coud finds a most unusual cargo in his mates’ cargo hold: Ren, an “Edel Reid”, a race prized by humans for granting special combat power to their partners through “Reacting”. He quickly discovers, however, that Ren is even more prized than he expected. The pirate ship is visited by three members of the Edel Reid Complete Protection Agency “Arc Aire”, who try to purchase her. When Coud refuses, the ship is suddenly attacked by a mysterious force, and Coud’s captain charges him with Ren’s protection.

Similarity – Both have human and weapons partnership, where one can turn into a weapon but the storyline is completely different. However, both have very light comedy (but Souleater is way funnier for me) and lots of fight scene and action.

4. D.Gray-man

DGray manSynopsis – Allen Walker, a young man with a cursed eye, lives to destroy a weapon known as Akuma. These weapons created by the Milleneum Earl are sent out by his command to purge the world from humans. Allen Walker uses an anti-akuma weapon, Innocence, to counter the Earl’s attempts at destroying humanity. He travels to the Black Order by his mentor’s directions. There he meets with others who also fight against the Milleneum Earl’s plans. But more questions start to appear as Allen and his friends move further along to reach their goal. And these questions that seem to connect to Allen’s past.

Similarity – They are both Shounen anime series, but with extremely heavy focus on the individual characters, and their progression mentally and emotionally, not just physically. Both have reasonable “power-ups.” All episodes that could be considered as “filler” seem to fulfill an important role in both shows, thus giving us few unimportant episodes. Also, the ambiance and styling of both shows are similar.

3. Blood Lad

Blood Lad
Synopsis – Blood Lad follows Staz, a vampire that is obsessed with the human world, and Fuyumi, a human girl that was killed and turned into a ghost after wandering into the demon world. Staz promises to help Fuyumi regain her humanity by bringing her back to life, as it means that he would be able to visit the human world

Similarity – The concepts of demons and souls are brought together in both Soul Eater and Blood Lad. Their worlds contrast with the law of nature along with the modern world.
The main male protagonist from both series are hot-headed but does care about his friends and companion. The main female characters contrast quite a bit from both series but do also play some pivotal roles in the stories. They often encourage their companion to believe in themselves at what they do.

2. Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

Ao no ExorcistSynopsis – Ao no Exorcist follows Rin Okumura who appears to be an ordinary, somewhat troublesome teenager—that is until one day he is ambushed by demons. His world turns upside down when he discovers that he is, in fact, the very son of Satan and that his demon father wishes for him to return so they can conquer Assiah together. Not wanting to join the king of Gehenna, Rin decides to begin training to become an exorcist so that he can fight to defend Assiah alongside his brother Yukio.

Similarity – Homogenous shows with a school setting training to become a specialist in some sort. In SE, they work hard to be strong weapons and meisters. In Ao no Exorcist, they attend school, well, obviously, to be exorcists. Friends helping each other, having fun and serving the people of their land. Both shows will be extremely entertaining especially if you are a fan of unique fighting scenes, backstories, school themes and so on.

1. Noragami: Stray God

NoragamiSynopsis – Yato is a minor deity who lacks even a single shrine. In order to build his own shrine, he scrawls his cell number on the wall of a downtown bathroom telling people he will help them in exchange for a 5-yen offering, becoming a self-styled “delivery god.” Hiyori, the daughter of a respectable family, is almost killed in a traffic accident but is rescued by Yato.
This causes her to become a “hanyou,” a person who can easily lose her soul. She chases Yato down, and they begin to work together. Yato also finds a boy named Yukine who becomes a “sacred treasure” that can be used by a god. The three of them battle “you” who bring harm to humans as Yato’s hidden history is gradually revealed.

Similarity – The main characters from both series have a hot-blooded personality but is down to earth when it comes to casual conversations. At the same time, they do truly care about their partners and the people around them. Both have solid character development, although Soul Eater’s takes a little longer (it is 51 episodes). Good action sequences.
