6. Toradora!
5. Bleach
4. Hidan no Aria

10. 11eyes

Synopsis – When the Sky turns Red, the Moon turns Black, and monsters begin roaming the streets, Satsuki Kakeru is at a loss for what to do. Along with his best friend Yuka, they try to decipher why they have been sent to this strange world, which is seemingly empty aside from themselves.

However, when the “Red Night” ends, Kakeru and Yuka believed it was all a dream, until it happens again and they are left in a dangerous situation. They meet four others in the same predicament: Kusakabe Misuzu, an expert swordswoman, Tachibana Kukuri, a strange mute girl who looks uncannily like Kakeru’s deceased sister, Hirohara Yukiko, a lively young girl whose personality reverts to that of a cold killer when her glasses are removed, and Tajima Takahisa, a young pyrokineticist.

As the six of them band together to survive and discover what this mysterious world is, things take a turn for the worse as six shadows appear before them…

Similarity –In 11 eyes, a group of students are sucked into a different dimension of the world where time is stopped. Similarly, in Shakugan no Shana, Flame haze can put up a fujutsu (stops time also) which encompasses a specific area and also turns everything red too.
The male protagonists of both series (Kakeru from 11 eyes and Yuji from SnS) are fighting to protect their loved ones (although Shana is more like the protecting one in SnS).

9. Pandora Hearts

Pandora HeartsSynopsis – To young Oz Vessalius, heir to the Vessalius Duke House, the perilous world called the Abyss is nothing more than a folktale used to scare misbehaving children. However, when Oz’s coming-of-age ceremony is interrupted by the malicious Baskerville Clan intent on banishing him into the depths of the Abyss, the Vessalius heir realizes that his peaceful life of luxury is at its end. Now, he must confront the world of the Abyss and its dwellers, the monstrous “Chains,” which are both not quite as fake as he once believed.

Based on the supernatural fantasy manga of the same name, Pandora Hearts tells the story of fifteen-year-old Oz’s journey to discover the meaning behind the strange events that have overtaken his life. Assisted by a mysterious Chain named Alice, whose nickname is “Bloodstained Black Rabbit,” and members of a clandestine organization known as “Pandora,” Oz begins to realize his existence may have more meaning than he could have ever imagined.

Similarity – Heroins are similar. Stong willed and stubborn with a soft side. There is light comedy in both. The story and imagery are mysterious and dark. Chains are similar to Rinne – they eat people. One faction must stop another (Flame Haze vs. Guze – Pandora vs. Baskerville) There is a grip of action in both animes. If you liked SnS then you’ll like Pandora Hearts.

8. Yumekui Merry

Yumekui Merry (Dream Eater Merry)Synopsis- Yumekui Merry begins with Yumeji Fujiwara, a seemingly average high school student. But ten years ago, Yumeji gained the ability to see the dream auras of other people around him. This ability allows Yumeji to predict what type of dreams people are likely to have next. The dreams of others may not be a mystery to Yumeji, but his own dreams have recently left him puzzled. In dream after dream, Yumeji has been pursued by an army of cats lead by John Doe, who claims he needs Yumeji’s body to enter the real world.

These strange occurrences get stranger when Yumeji meets Nightmare Merry, a dream demon seeking to return to her own world. Using his powers, Yumeji decides to assist Merry in getting back home. But Merry’s very presence in the real world means that the barrier separating dreams and reality has been broken, and not all of the dream demons intend to come to Earth peacefully…

Similarity – Both anime focus on a fairly normal boy who meets an extraordinary girl who’s not from the world. They spend their time fighting monsters from the other world while falling in love with each other. Each of them have a heavy focus on the supernatural aspect. I don’t think either of them are that good, but if you like one, you’ll probably like the other.

7. Kurokami The Animation

Synopsis – High school student Ibuki Keita has been haunted by misfortune for as long as he can remember. For no apparent reason, everyone around him dies tragically. Ultimately, he refuses to become too close to anyone, even his childhood friend Akane. This leaves Keita alone in a life full of misery and disgrace.

While eating at his favorite ramen shop one evening, Keita meets a strange young girl named Kuro. Possessing abilities that surpass that of a normal human being, Kuro classifies herself as a Mototsumitama. She explains to Keita about “Terra,” a life-energy force split between three identical looking people; a global phenomenon dubbed the “Doppeliner System.” As a Mototsumitama, Kuro guards the “Coexistence Equilibrium,” the beings that protect the flow of Terra around the world. Keita refuses to believe her story, until he is caught up in the crossfire of this hidden world. On the verge of death, he makes a contract with Kuro, unbeknownst to its true meaning. Now he is bound to Kuro, and must be with her at all times. Could Keita’s misfortune possibly get any greater?

Similarity – They have too similar stories. A guy runs into a girl with red hair who is not really human. He finds out that he is not real from her and then the go on a journey to save the day. The fact that Shana and Kuro don’t seem to have any shame or knowledge of regular social female behavoiur. I was almost confusing the stories that is how similar they are.

6. Toradora!

Toradora
Synopsis – Ryuuji Takasu is a gentle high school student with a love for housework; but in contrast to his kind nature, he has an intimidating face that often gets him labeled as a delinquent. On the other hand is Taiga Aisaka, a small, doll-like student, who is anything but a cute and fragile girl. Equipped with a wooden katana and feisty personality, Taiga is known throughout the school as the “Palmtop Tiger.”

One day, an embarrassing mistake causes the two students to cross paths. Ryuuji discovers that Taiga actually has a sweet side: she has a crush on the popular vice president, Yuusaku Kitamura, who happens to be his best friend. But things only get crazier when Ryuuji reveals that he has a crush on Minori Kushieda—Taiga’s best friend!

Toradora! is a romantic comedy that follows this odd duo as they embark on a quest to help each other with their respective crushes, forming an unlikely alliance in the process.

Similarity – If you enjoyed the relationship between Shana and Yuuji in Shakugan no Shana, but were disappointed with the development and treatment of that relationship, Toradora! is what you’re looking for! Toradora! does relationship development right: the characters are actually aware of the changes occuring in their feelings and relationships, events that happen in one episode still mean something in later episodes, and the emotional moments are dramatic and powerful.

5. Bleach

Bleach
Synopsis –Ichigo Kurosaki is an ordinary high schooler—until his family is attacked by a Hollow, a corrupt spirit that seeks to devour human souls. It is then that he meets a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki, who gets injured while protecting Ichigo’s family from the assailant. To save his family, Ichigo accepts Rukia’s offer of taking her powers and becomes a Soul Reaper as a result.

However, as Rukia is unable to regain her powers, Ichigo is given the daunting task of hunting down the Hollows that plague their town. However, he is not alone in his fight, as he is later joined by his friends—classmates Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Uryuu Ishida—who each have their own unique abilities. As Ichigo and his comrades get used to their new duties and support each other on and off the battlefield, the young Soul Reaper soon learns that the Hollows are not the only real threat to the human world.

Similarity – both have a super natural girl saving a normal boy and helping that boy to gain power to protect the people he cares about. both have a lot of fighting and demons. shakugan no shana has a romance to it but other than that the two animes are a lot alike.

4. Hidan no Aria

Hidan no Aria
Synopsis – In response to the worsening crime rate, Japan creates Tokyo Butei High, an elite academy where “Butei” or armed detectives hone their deadly skills in hopes of becoming mercenary-like agents of justice. One particular Butei is Kinji Tooyama, an anti-social and curt sophomore dropout who was once a student of the combat-centric Assault Division. Kinji now lives a life of leisure studying logistics in order to cover up his powerful but embarrassing special ability. However, his peaceful days soon come to an end when he becomes the target of the infamous “Butei Killer,” and runs into an emotional hurricane and outspoken prodigy of the highest rank, Aria Holmes Kanzaki, who saves Kinji’s life and demands that he become her partner after seeing what he is truly capable of.

Similarity – The female leads in both of these shows are almost exactly the same. Both shows have a couple of girls around the main lead, although it’s obvious who is going to win. Both anime revolve around the main female and male fighting together. The main male character is quite a bit better in Hidan no Aria than in Shakugan no Shana, in my opinion.

3. Toaru Majutsu no Index

Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)
Synopsis – Index is still a fugitive and many powerful magical organizations and individuals want to take her to use the books in her memory, eliminating her in the process. War between those organizations is also starting to emerge. Index can only rely on her friend Tōma, who has always protected her, along with Misaka and other friends from the Academy.

Similarity – Both are set in a world that is quite normal on the first look (one is a bit more futuristic though) but involve supernatural occurrences, like magicians or people with abnormal powers.
The atmosphere is quite similar, though the plot of Shakugan no Shana is a lot darker/heavier at the start of the show.

2. Kaze no Stigma

Synopsis – Kazuma Yagami is a user of “Fuujutsu,” the ability to control the wind. He returns to his old home, the noble Kannagi household, after being banished four years ago for his inability to control fire and his subsequent defeat in a duel at the hands of his younger cousin, Ayano Kannagi.

Returning after such a brutal exile already gives rise to many conflicts, but to make matters worse, several Kannagi family members have recently been murdered with Fuujutsu. This leads the Kannagi family, including the hot-headed Ayano, to suspect Kazuma as the culprit. Now, Kazuma must not only clear his name, but also aid the family he shares a mutual hatred with, in order to discover the true identity of the killer.

Similarity – Both have red haired female protagonists of a young/teen age which use a sword and manipulate fire in one way or another
Both have a wise “guardian”. Kazuma in KnS and Alastor in SnS
Both have elements of romance
Both fight against some sort of army (and the enemy army from both anime, reside in a castle of some type)

1. Zero no Tsukaima

Zero no Tsukaima (The Familiar of Zero)Synopsis – Meet Louise, a budding magician. The students at the Tristein Academy call her “Zero Louise”, due to her current record of zero successes with magic. In fact, her magic tends to go spectacularly wrong. Now, as an important test of her aptitude for magic, she must summon a familiar to be her servant. At this critical moment, she summons up all her magic and wishes for a familiar that is “devoted, beautiful and powerful”, and gets… Hiraga Saito, an ordinary Japanese boy. It’s difficult to say who is more surprised and dismayed, but the rules don’t allow for second attempts. Louise is stuck with her strange familiar, and he with her.

Similarity – Both have Red-haired, tsundere characters who are the lead protagonists, accompanied by a brown-haired powerless male protagonist. Both of them are voiced by the same Voice Actors.

Zero no Tsukaima goes more fantastical, as it is a totally different world set in the medieval ages. ZnT features more of a school environment and a larger cast of side characters. It’s also more detailed in expanding its magical universe so you really get a feel of the premise.

Zero no Tsukaima has more of everything Shakugan no Shana has: Romance, School-life, Ecchi, Magic Rules and Universe, Better Soundtrack, More Side Characters. The only thing it doesn’t have is Action, which can be a huge-turnoff, so prepare yourself to focus more on the above mentioned factors instead.
