10. Nana

nanaSynopsis – Nana Osaki is a guarded and ambitious young woman with a strong will and a rough past. She is the vocalist for a punk band called Black Stones and she desires fame and recognition more than anything else. Nana Komatsu is an outgoing and flighty young woman with a weak will and a stable past. Her life revolves around her desire to find love and marriage. The two meet for the first time while traveling to Tokyo – in pursuit of their respective dreams – and they later decide to be roommates. Although drastically different people, the two become very close and together they find out if their biggest dreams have room for their best friend.

Similarity – Both deal with the complications of relationships, deceit, cheating, and loss of innocence. However, NANA doesn’t make you want to tear out your hair quite as much, and isn’t sluttery on such a high scale. They’re twisted in the sense that everything is all cute and honky dory and all the characters are getting along at first, but then pretty much everyone becomes bad over time and the whole love story (or stories) becomes very dark, depressing, and dramatic. If you even remotely enjoyed School Days, Nana is perfect for you.

9. True Tears

True TearsSynopsis – At school, a strange girl named Isurugi Noe suddenly takes an interest in Shinichirou. Noe loves the school’s chickens, especially Raigomaru, who she’s convinced can fly. Thus begins a strange relationship where Shinichirou helps Noe resolve her problems, even as he tries to figure out his own feelings about Noe, Hiromi, and his childhood friend, Andou Aiko. All the while Shinichirou is also trying to find the key to unlock Hiromi’s heart, and to finish the children’s picture book he’s been writing. Surprisingly, it’s Noe who proves critical to both…

Similarity – Both animes focus very deeply into the story that involves love triangles and one-sided love as well as problems surrounding it. True Tears covers the situation a bit more seriously than most harem anime, but it’s not nearly as gritty as School Days. They are both Drama, Romance, School.

8. Flowers of Evil (Aku no Hana)

Flowers of Evil (Aku no Hana)Synopsis – Takao worships the class beauty, Nanako, from afar. When he is alone in the classroom one day after school, he notices her bag of gym clothes on the floor. He can’t resist picking it up. He plans to return it, but the next day, all the girls are commiserating with Nanako that some pervert has stolen her gym clothes. Worse than that, their classmate Sawa quietly lets him know that she saw him take the clothes and will tell Nanako if he doesn’t make a contract with her to do whatever she asks of him. And so their strange, tense relationship begins.

Similarity – Dark and very controversial anime that deconstruct the romance genre and give you a disturbed feeling while you are watching them. You are a teenager, you are in love and you do not know how to express it and also a girl is harassing by knowing what you keep inside. Two series that show the darkest side that someone can reach for love and how feelings can hurt others and confuse themselves.

7. The Future Diary (Mirai Nikki)

Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary)Synopsis – Lonely high school student, Yukiteru Amano, spends his days writing a diary on his cellphone, while conversing with his two seemingly imaginary friends Deus Ex Machina, who is the god of time and space, and Murmur, the god’s servant. Revealing himself to be an actual entity, Deus grants Yukiteru a “Random Diary,” which shows highly descriptive entries based on the future and forces him into a bloody battle royale with 11 other holders of similarly powerful future diaries. With the last person standing designated as the new god of time and space, Yukiteru must find and kill the other 11 in order to survive.

Similarity – Both have a school setting and a romance where one of the girls is basically THE definition of “yandere” and the boy doesn’t speak his mind. School days rather focuses on the romance and the drama, while Mirai Nikki has a plot that revolves around a survival game, though the romance is still important for the way the character act. Both can be a bit disturbing at certain parts and both are kind of hit-or-miss shows with a lot of people loving them and a lot of people not liking them at all.

6. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica)

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)Synopsis – Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are regular middle school girls with regular lives, but all that changes when they encounter Kyuubey, a cat-like magical familiar, and Homura Akemi, the new transfer student. Kyuubey offers them a proposition: he will grant any one of their wishes and in exchange, they will each become a magical girl, gaining enough power to fulfill their dreams. However, Homura Akemi, a magical girl herself, urges them not to accept the offer, stating that everything is not what it seems.

Similarity – Both of these shows start out pretty innocent and sweet, but early on there’s a plot twist that completely changes the mood of the show. Both of these anime are also famous deconstructions. Madoka deconstructs magical girl anime while School Days deconstructs the harem genre. Both of these shows are worth checking out if you like dark anime.

5. Rumbling Hearts (Kimi ga Nozomu Eien)

Rumbling Hearts (Kimi ga Nozomu Eien)Synopsis – At first, Takayuki Narumi is befriended by Mitsuki Hayase only because Mitsuki’s best friend, Haruka Suzumiya has a crush on him; however since then, Takayuki, his pal Shinji Taira, and Mitsuki have grown to be the best of friends. Then one day, Haruka confesses to Takayuki her love for him. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, Takayuki agrees to go out with her. After a few incidents, their relationship gets intimate, even while Takayuki and Mitsuki begin to realize their feelings for each other. But when tragedy strikes, things are never the same for these four friends again.

Similarity – School Days gave me the self-proclamed “Great Depression of Martin.” Both anime turned a happy pervert into a sad and depressed man who finally began to think clearly and work harder in school. Honestly i recommend both for anyone who is a pervert so they can reach enlightenment and become better men.

4. Myself; Yourself

Myself YourselfSynopsis – In the peaceful little town of Sakuranomori, a group of young friends are about to bid farewell to one of their own. Due to his parents’ business plans, Sana Hidaka has to move away from his quiet childhood home to the boisterous city of Tokyo. Though it pains him, he must say goodbye to his precious friends—the kind-hearted Aoi Oribe, the spunky Wakatsuki twins, Shuri and Shuusuke, and the cheerful and upbeat Nanaka Yatsushiro. Five years later, Sana, now a 16-year-old high school student, returns to his hometown with the hope of restoring his old life. However, he quickly realizes that although his town may not have changed drastically, the friends he left behind are not who they used to be. Unsettling shadows loom over Sakuranomori as his friends hold new secrets and bear burdens that threaten the bonds they once shared.

Similarity – Both shows have similar character designs, even though the personalities in the show are very different. Also, both have themes that follow mental illness and trauma. However, School Days focuses more on romance while Myself ; Yourself seems to focus more on character relationships. There were just many times during Myself ; Yourself that reminded me of School Days, even though their plots are different.

3. When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni or When They CrySynopsis – On one hot summer day in 1983, a transfer student named Maebara Keiichi comes to a peaceful rural village in Hinamizawa. There, he befriends his classmates Rena, Mion, Rika, and Satoko. Accepted as a full-fledged member of the “club,” Keiichi and the gang plays all sorts of activities ranging from card and board games to hide-and-seek. But just as Keiichi was beginning to be assimilated in simple rural life, he stumbles upon the dark history of Hinamizawa. As Keiichi dives deeper into the mystery, he finds that his new found friends may not be all what they claim to be.

Similarity – Higurashi has taken out the element of sex and added in more murderous intent. The same feeling that makes you think that b****es be crazy. School days have more stupid characters while you don’t mind the consequences that they receive but in Higurashi, you know that bad things are gonna happen and you try to not get attached to the characters but your heart still surges when something happens. Must check out.

2. Scum’s Wish (Kuzu no Honkai)

Scum's Wish (Kuzu no Honkai)Synopsis – Hanabi has loved her childhood friend and neighbor Narumi Kanai for as long as she can remember, so she is elated to discover that he is her new homeroom teacher. However, Narumi is soon noticed by the music teacher, Akane Minagawa, and a relationship begins to blossom between them, much to Hanabi’s dismay. Mugi was tutored by Akane in middle school, and has been in love with her since then. Through a chance meeting in the hallway, he encounters Hanabi. As these two lonely souls spend more time together, they decide to use each other as a substitute for the one they truly love, sharing physical intimacy with one another in order to stave off their loneliness

Similarity – It explores similar themes of desires and the slow descent of an average and reasonable character into the depths of sexual activity. It’s nowhere near as character-driven, but it explores the same themes and has a similar ‘feel’ to it. Much more PG than Honkai, though but a bit more realistic and with less hateable character really beautiful looking with cool unique style combined with really good soundtrack

1. White Album 2

White AlbumSynopsis – Haruki Kitahara’s light music club is on the verge of disbanding. At this rate, the third year’s dream of performing at the school festival would never be realized. However, as his exhausted fingers drift through the chords of “White Album,” the first song he would ever play, an angelic voice and mysterious piano begin harmonizing with his lonely guitar. It is a momentous performance that marks the beginning of everything for Haruki.

Similarity – What do you get when two girls fall in love with the same guy? School Days is fairly similar to White Album 2 with the only major difference being that the main characters of WA2 prefer running away from their problems. But WA2 does not take it too extreme like what School Days did. Both main characters can easily be portrayed as wimps because they run away from their problems and try to avoid it. This keeps giving everyone a larger burden and creates situations of decision making.
