10. Barakamon

BarakamonSynopsis – Seishuu Handa is an up-and-coming calligrapher: young, handsome, talented, and unfortunately, a narcissist to boot. When a veteran labels his award-winning piece as “unoriginal,” Seishuu quickly loses his cool with severe repercussions. As punishment, and also in order to aid him in self-reflection, Seishuu’s father exiles him to the Goto Islands, far from the comfortable Tokyo lifestyle the temperamental artist is used to. Now thrown into a rural setting, Seishuu must attempt to find new inspiration and develop his own unique art style—that is, if boisterous children (headed by the frisky Naru Kotoishi), fujoshi middle schoolers, and energetic old men stop barging into his house.

Similarity – These two series show a young man that gets to live a different way that he was used to, that discovers again an innocent and hopeful way of life. Barakamon’s mc is probably more far gone and Relife contains some supernatural elements. But overall have similar feelings, great main and supporting cast and both make you feel good

Due to his meeting with her, the fate of special power-users will be exposed.

Similarity – Both are about high school life
-Good graphics, beautiful characters
-Same genres: school, comedy, romance

8. The Pet Girl of Sakurasou (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo)

The Pet Girl of SakurasouSynopsis – Sorata is kicked out of his high-school dorms for keeping a cat, and moves into a small dorm called Sakurasō. It turns out that all the residents, in addition to being uncontrollable and weird, are outstanding in some way: a well-known animator, a scriptwriter, a programmer. A beautiful girl called Mashiro moves in who is an internationally known painter but is so devoted to art that she can’t even dress herself, and Sorata is given the job of looking after her. Through her and the other residents, he learns who he is and what he wants to do.

Similarity – Both main girl characters are very similar in terms of lacking in social skills but is very talented and lonely. Both are deadpan but also funny and lovable, delivering some very good dry humor. Both deals with themes of being talented viewed from the perspective of the genius and the untalented. Both have a good balance of romance, comedy, and drama

7. Recovery of an MMO Junkie (Net-juu no Susume)

Net juu no Susume (Recovery of an MMO Junkie)Synopsis – For the first time since graduating high school, 30-year-old Moriko Morioka is unemployed—and she couldn’t be happier. Having quit her long-standing job of over 11 years, Moriko quickly turns to online games to pass her now-plentiful free time, reinventing herself as the handsome and dashing male hero “Hayashi” in the MMO Fruits de Mer. With the pesky societal obligations of the real world out of the way, she blissfully dives headfirst into the realm of the game, where she promptly meets the kind and adorable healer Lily. Befriending each other almost instantly, the two become inseparable just as Moriko herself becomes more and more engrossed in her new “life” as Hayashi. Eventually, Moriko adopts the reclusive lifestyle in its entirety, venturing out from the safety of her apartment only when absolutely necessary.

Similarity – Very similar classical romance anime (with a modern and cute MMO twist!) about working adults that aren’t entirely content with their lives. Like with Net-juu, these adults take on different faces of a new life, in this case, a program that turns them into high schoolers again and stumbles into romance along the way through a lot of coincidence. They then have to figure out how to make a relationship work despite all these hurdles and help each other grow as individuals.

6. Kiznaiver

KiznaiverSynopsis – The fictional Japanese city named Sugomori City is built on reclaimed land. But as the years go by, the city’s population is decreasing. One day, Sonosaki tells her classmate Katsuhira: “You have been selected to be a Kiznaiver.” The Kizuna System, which allows Katsuhira to share his wounds, connects him to the classmates whose lives and personalities completely differ from his. The Kizuna System is an incomplete system for the implementation of world peace that connects people through wounds. All those who are connected to this system are called Kiznaivers. When one Kiznaiver is wounded, the system divides and transmits the wound among the other Kiznaivers.

Similarity – Both anime deal with teenage drama, relationships and friendship
– Both anime are about a scientific experiment to make society better
– Both have similar personalities of characters (Chizuru and Katsuhira, Kariu and Tenga….etc)
– Both MCs have a dark hidden past

5. Rainbow Days (Nijiiro Days)

Rainbow Days (Nijiiro Days)Synopsis – Nijiiro Days follows the colorful lives and romantic relationships of four high school boys—Natsuki Hashiba, a dreamer with delusions of love; Tomoya Matsunaga, a narcissistic playboy who has multiple girlfriends; Keiichi Katakura, a kinky sadist who always carries a whip; and Tsuyoshi Naoe, an otaku who has a cosplaying girlfriend.

Similarity – Comedic aura. The side character has a crush on a girl. The MC is dense to the girl who actually likes him. High school and lots of romantic stuff….lalala, if you’re a fan then you know what to do.

4. NHK ni Youkoso! (Welcome to the N.H.K.)

Welcome to the N.H.K. (NHK ni Youkoso!)Synopsis – NHK ni Youkoso! is a psychological dramedy that follows Tatsuhiro as he strives to escape from the NHK’s wicked machinations and the disease of self-wrought isolation, while struggling to even just leave his apartment and find a job. His unexpected encounter with the mysterious Misaki Nakahara might signal a reversal of fortune for Tatsuhiro, but with this meeting comes the inevitable cost of having to face his greatest fear—society.

Similarity – Both of these anime presents a life cycle of a NEET with a twist of romance comedy and splice of life. The difference is NHK ni Youkoso has a tiny bit of psychological and mature theme while ReLIFE is a lighter side anime which has a school setting but overall, they both have a story plot that talks about real life work/adult situations. These animes could be a great help in helping/preventing a NEET/shutins.

3. Golden Time

Golden TimeSynopsis – Due to a tragic accident, Banri Tada is struck with amnesia, dissolving the memories of his hometown and past. However, after befriending Mitsuo Yanagisawa, he decides to move on and begin a new life at law school in Tokyo. But just as he is beginning to adjust to his college life, the beautiful Kouko Kaga dramatically barges into Banri’s life, and their chance meeting marks the beginning of an unforgettable year. After having a glimpse of college life, Banri learns that he is in a new place and a new world – a place where he can be reborn, to have new friends, fall in love, makes mistakes and grow. And as he begins to discover who he was, the path he has chosen leads him towards a blindingly bright life that he will never want to forget.

Similarity – Both are about romance and the story between the Main Characters (MC). Characters have different personalities but are given certain situations. Such as both Male MC had something happen to them which made them find someone they eventually will love. Female characters seems to be very different. But it’s a recommendation not finding two of the same animes, so I would try this out.

2. Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You

Kimi ni TodokeSynopsis – Kuronuma Sawako is completely misunderstood by her classmates. Her timid and sweet demeanor is often mistaken for malicious behavior. This is due to her resemblance to the ghost girl from “The Ring,” which has led her peers to give her the nickname Sadako. Longing to make friends and live a normal life, she is naturally drawn to Kazehaya Shouta, the most popular guy in class, whose “100% refreshing” personality earns him great admiration from Sawako. So when Kazehaya starts talking to her, maybe there is hope for the friendships Sawako has always longed for. Maybe… there is even a little hope for some romance in her future.

Similarity – In both shows there are characters that have social struggles with their classmates. The relationship between main characters is also similar, as the male lead is more “happier” type of person and the female lead more “timid” type of person. In both shows the female leads both surprise you so if you have seen one, give other a try 🙂

1. ERASED (Boku dake ga Inai Machi)

Boku dake ga Inai Machi (ERASED)Synopsis – Satoru Fujinuma is a struggling manga artist who has the ability to turn back time and prevent deaths. When his mother is killed he turns back time to solve the mystery, but ends up back in elementary school, just before the disappearance of his classmate Kayo. Soon, he realizes that the murder may be connected to the abduction and killing of one of his classmates, the solitary and mysterious Kayo Hinazuki, that took place when he was a child. This is his chance to make things right.

Similarity – If you liked ERASED you will probably have fun with ReLIFE. I see a similar premise, the idea of turning back time (less literal in ReLIFE), and themes in these two series. ReLIFE is a bit more lighthearted than ERASED, though I suppose both have a heartwarming side. Tension is much lower in ReLIFE since it’s not a murder mystery, but it still has great moments of conflict and progression. I couldn’t recommend ERASED more if you enjoyed Relife.
