1. Gunslinger Girl

10. R.O.D the TV

Synopsis – Three girls named Anita, Michelle and Maggie are hired to protect Japanese author Nenene Sumiregawa during her stay in Hong Kong. In an incident where the “Paper Sisters” save Nenene from a disgruntled author, Nenene discovers that the sisters have the capability to control paper at their own will – an ability once used by her long-lost friend Yomiko “The Paper” Readman. Arriving in Japan after an airliner incident, the Paper Sisters move into Nenene’s apartment and become her freeloading bodyguards.

Similarity –In general, I got a very similar feeling from both anime; probably primarily because both are about a team of badass female secret agents. Also in both anime, these secret agents have some kind of super power. Princess Principal takes place in England while ROD has ties to this country. Both are good anime, so if you enjoyed one make sure to check out the other.

9. Akuma no Riddle

Synopsis – Tokaku Azuma has just transferred to the elite Myoujou Academy, a private girls’ boarding school. But there’s a catch: she, along with 11 of her fellow students in Class Black, is an assassin taking part in the challenge to kill their sweet-natured classmate, Haru Ichinose. Whoever succeeds will be granted their deepest desire, no matter the difficulty or cost. However, each assassin only gets one chance; if they fail to kill her, they will be expelled.

Despite the extraordinary reward, Tokaku decides to take a different course of action. Though Haru is her target, the young assassin soon finds herself drawn to the very girl she is supposed to kill. With the entire class out for Haru, Tokaku refuses to let her friend die, vowing to protect her from a growing bloodlust.

Similarity – If you appreciated the subtle but strong affection that made the characters in Princess Principal keep fighting, then Akuma no Riddle has a similar way of telling its story. Plus it’s another cast of badass, skilled girls although less friendly with each other for sure.

8. Nijuu Mensou no Musume

Synopsis- Chiko is the daughter of the wealthy Mikamo family who has to live with her aunt and uncle after her parents passed away. Because her aunt wants to inherit the Mikamo family’s wealth, she gives Chiko poisoned food. One day, however, she’s kidnapped by the Nijuu Mensou (20 Faces) and decides to join his clan.

Similarity – Both shows are about young girls on an adventure through an alternate timeline with elements of steampunk/diesel-punk and retro-futurism. Daughter of Twenty Faces is a complete story though, and not nearly as episodic in nature as Princess Principal. If you’re looking for a somewhat dark narrative with a strong female lead, you can’t go wrong with Daughter of Twenty Faces.

7. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Synopsis – Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are regular middle school girls with regular lives, but all that changes when they encounter Kyuubey, a cat-like magical familiar, and Homura Akemi, the new transfer student.

Kyuubey offers them a proposition: he will grant any one of their wishes and in exchange, they will each become a magical girl, gaining enough power to fulfill their dreams. However, Homura Akemi, a magical girl herself, urges them not to accept the offer, stating that everything is not what it seems.

A story of hope, despair, and friendship, Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica deals with the difficulties of being a magical girl and the price one has to pay to make a dream come true.

Similarity – Both feature all female lead characters who get involved with top secret operations. One fights witches, while the other engages in espionage. Although staring very cute high school age girls, they both deal with the very dark subject matter and heavy moral obligations; the difference being Princess Principal was more upfront about it. The biggest similarity would have to be in the character personalities and motivations. Much like every character in Princess Principal is different and has different reasons for joining, each character in Madoka are very different with different motivations.

6. Shuumatsu no Izetta

Shuumatsu no Izetta (Izetta The Last Witch)
Synopsis – After Germania invaded a neighboring country in 1939, Europe spiraled into a devastating war. During the war, Germania set its sights on the weak alpine country of Elystadt. Boasting a far superior military and having achieved profuse success earlier in the war, it was expected that Germania would conquer Elystadt with ease.

Matters are only made worse for the small country when Germanian soldiers capture their princess, Ortfiné “Finé” Fredericka von Eylstadt, as she is heading to a crucial meeting with Britannia. Yet, when a concurrent Germanian transport mission goes awry, Izetta, the last witch alive, escapes. When she recognizes Princess Finé from her childhood, Izetta rescues her from the Germanian soldiers by making use of her magical abilities. Now reunited with the princess, Izetta pledges to protect Elystadt from Germania, and with the last surviving witch on their arsenal, Elystadt hopes to turn the tides against the imperialist war giant.

Similarity – The two anime give out similar feeling when you watch them, from the way the episodes are directed, to the way they are portraying the action in general. And let’s not forget the serious(but also realistic by adding the moments of relaxation) portrayal of war(in Princess Principal being internal and in Izetta being between countries).
Both of these anime have the main cast of characters that consists mostly of female characters.

5. Bungou Stray Dogs

Synopsis –For weeks, Atsushi Nakajima’s orphanage has been plagued by a mystical tiger that only he seems to be aware of. Suspected to be behind the strange incidents, the 18-year-old is abruptly kicked out of the orphanage and left hungry, homeless, and wandering through the city.

While starving on a riverbank, Atsushi saves a rather eccentric man named Osamu Dazai from drowning. Whimsical suicide enthusiast and supernatural detective, Dazai has been investigating the same tiger that has been terrorizing the boy. Together with Dazai’s partner Doppo Kunikida, they solve the mystery, but its resolution leaves Atsushi in a tight spot. As various odd events take place, Atsushi is coerced into joining their firm of supernatural investigators, taking on unusual cases the police cannot handle, alongside his numerous enigmatic co-workers.

Similarity – Similarities:
– Group of people that go on missions.
– The supernatural plays somewhat of a role
– Lots of action
– Both have a newbie in the group

– While both have mystery, Princess Principal’s characters are spies while Bungou’s are detectives.
– Bungou is more comedic
– Princess has interesting timeline and mysterious characters

4. Kuroshitsuji

Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)
Synopsis – In Victorian-era London, on the night of Ciel Phantomhive’s tenth birthday a fire destroyed his manor and killed both of his parents. In a moment of death, Ceil strikes a deal with a demon, his soul in exchange for revenge. This demon becomes his butler and calls himself by name of Sebastian Michaelis, to protect and serve Ciel until the deal has been completed. One month after the fire Ciel returns from being missing, with his new butler Sebastian. Ceil is now the head of the Phantomhive corporation, handling all business affairs as well as the work as the Queen of England’s guard dog and looking for his parent’s murders.

Similarity – Another year, another anime about people in Victorian London(Princess Principal adding steampunk to the mix and Black Butler adding supernatural mysteries).
In both anime, there is a mix of relaxing and dark/cruel atmosphere.

3. 91 Days

Synopsis – As a child living in the town of Lawless, Angelo Lagusa has witnessed a tragedy: his parents and younger brother have been mercilessly slaughtered by the Vanetti mafia family. Losing everything he holds dear, he leaves both his name and hometown behind, adopting the new identity of Avilio Bruno.

Seven years later, Avilio finally has his chance for revenge when he receives a mysterious letter prompting him to return to Lawless. Obliging, he soon encounters the Vanetti don’s son, Nero, and seeks to befriend him using the skills he has quietly honed for years.

Set during the Prohibition era, 91 Days tells the story of Avilio’s dark, bloodstained path to vengeance, as he slowly ends each of the men involved in the killing of his family.

Similarity – If you want noir action in anime or just an anime with a great atmosphere I can recommend you many anime, two of those being “91 Days” and “Princess Principal”.
While 91 Days puts more focus on the mafia, Princess Principal puts it on spy action in Victorian London.

2. Joker Game

Anime Like 91 DaysSynopsis – With World War II right around the corner, intelligence on other countries’ social and economic situation has become a valuable asset. As a result, Japan has established a new spy organization known as the “D Agency” to obtain this weapon.

Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki, eight agents have been assigned to infiltrate and observe some of the most powerful countries, reporting on any developments associated with the war. In order to carry out these dangerous tasks, these men have trained their bodies to survive in extreme conditions and studied numerous fields such as communications and languages. However, their greatest strength lies in their ability to manipulate people in order to obtain the information necessary to give their nation the upper hand.

Similarity – Princess Principal is basically Joker game, moe edition.
Both are centered around spy rings and take place over 70 years ago (Joker game plays in the prelude to WWII, PP takes place in a steampunk version of the late 19th century England).
As such, both enter moral gray zones and make you question whether or not the guys you’re following are really the ‘good’ ones.
Lastly, as it appears, both are Episodic anime.

1. Gunslinger Girl

Synopsis – In the heart of Italy, the Social Welfare Agency rescues young girls from hospital beds and gives them a second chance at life using the latest in cybernetic advancements. With their artificially enhanced bodies, the girls are brainwashed and trained as assassins to carry out the dirty work of the Italian Government. Despite all the modifications, they are still just children at heart, struggling for recognition from those they love, even knowing the love they feel is manufactured. This tragic tale unfolds as these girls grapple with their emotions in an agency that treats them as nothing but ruthless killers.

Similarity – The reasons the two are similar is because of their focus on individual missions, that don’t have much in common other than the characters who complete said missions. Another common aspect of the two shows is that the main cast is mostly if not fully made out of girls of varying ages.
The difference is that in Gunslinger Girl the girls are an experiment to create good assassins, while in Princess Principal they are spies who do their job mostly out of free will.
