10. Bungou Stray Dogs

Bungou Stray DogsSynopsis – For weeks, Atsushi Nakajima’s orphanage has been plagued by a mystical tiger that only he seems to be aware of. Suspected to be behind the strange incidents, the 18-year-old is abruptly kicked out of the orphanage and left hungry, homeless, and wandering through the city.

While starving on a riverbank, Atsushi saves a rather eccentric man named Osamu Dazai from drowning. Whimsical suicide enthusiast and supernatural detective, Dazai has been investigating the same tiger that has been terrorizing the boy. Together with Dazai’s partner Doppo Kunikida, they solve the mystery, but its resolution leaves Atsushi in a tight spot. As various odd events take place, Atsushi is coerced into joining their firm of supernatural investigators, taking on unusual cases the police cannot handle, alongside his numerous enigmatic co-workers.

Bungou Stray DogsSimilarity – It’s pretty action-packed, but also so hilarious you will be cackling my friend if you liked Noragami in any way, shape or form you need to watch Bungou Stray Dogs. If you’re questionable about it (like I was) just watch it I promise you will not regret it.

9. xxxHOLiC

xxxHOLiCSynopsis – Kimihiro Watanuki can see spirits and other assorted supernatural creatures, which is quite a bothersome ability he strongly dislikes. On the way home one day, while plagued by some spirits, he is inexplicably compelled to enter a strange house. There, he encounters Yuuko, a mysterious woman who claims to be able to rid him of the ability to see and attract the troublesome creatures—for a price. She demands that he work at her “store” that grants wishes to people, and thus begins Watanuki’s adventures through weird and wonderful events.

xxxHOLiCSimilarity – Solving problems, offering deals, and dealing with spiritual apparitions. Noragami and xxxHOLiC offer an experience like no other with its supernatural themes.
Both series’ main male protagonist is involved with dealing with conflicts that deal with the supernatural phenomenon. They take place in a traditional/modern setting with various gags. The supporting characters also play various roles that influence each conflict. There is a good mixture of comedy, drama, and emotional basis that makes both series enjoyable.

8. Gintama

GintamaSynopsis – Twenty years ago, Edo-period Japan suffered a great cultural shock—the aliens called Amanto invaded the Earth, overpowered the nation’s government, and outlawed the carrying of swords by the once proud samurai. Moreover, the aliens took the people’s jobs and are currently running Japan as a sweatshop using the natives as laborers. In this strange new era are Gintoki Sakata, an eccentric samurai whose personal trademarks are his naturally permed silver hair, his love of anything sweet, and his addiction to Shonen Jump; Shinpachi Shimura, the teenaged heir of the Kakido-Ryu style; and Kagura, an incredibly strong alien girl from the powerful Yato clan. The trio is self-employed in an odd jobs shop called Yoruzuya Gin-chan, which offers to do almost anything for a price, from finding lost kittens to saving the world. Unfortunately, the jobs rarely go as planned, or pay enough to cover the pain and suffering the employees encounter—never mind their rent.

GintamaSimilarity – Very similar protagonists. Both are poor and do odd jobs from strangers for some cash. Both Gintoki and Yato are seen as mostly goofballs but have very dark pasts and made many enemies along the way. The series is both relatively lighthearted and comedic but have moments of high intensity and action.

7. Bakemonogatari

BakemonogatariSynopsis – Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student, manages to survive a vampire attack with the help of Meme Oshino, a strange man residing in an abandoned building. Though being saved from vampirism and now a human again, several side effects such as superhuman healing abilities and enhanced vision still remain. Regardless, Araragi tries to live the life of a normal student, with the help of his friend and the class president, Tsubasa Hanekawa.

When fellow classmate Hitagi Senjougahara falls down the stairs and is caught by Araragi, the boy realizes that the girl is unnaturally weightless. Despite Senjougahara’s protests, Araragi insists he helps her, deciding to enlist the aid of Oshino, the very man who had once helped him with his own predicament.

Through several tales involving demons and gods, Bakemonogatari follows Araragi as he attempts to help those who suffer from supernatural maladies.

BakemonogatariSimilarity – If the supernatural is an ingredient, then it is part of a recipe for both Bakemonogatari and Noragami. Not only do they involve supernatural beings but also legends that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. Both series involves action, drama, and comedy with humorous dialogues. The main protagonist in both series gets involved with events that put their lives in danger. There is also a bit of influence from folklore and legends relating to various cultures to some degrees.

6. Soul Eater

Soul EaterSynopsis – Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon meisters, the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to make the latter a “Death Scythe” and thus fit for use by the Shinigami, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch.

Soul EaterSimilarity – Both anime are about “gods” (Soul Eater: Shinigami). In both anime, some characters can change into a weapon and be used by their partner. In both anime, the “gods” (can) fight some sort of a monster that isn’t human or another normal animal. They’re also fun to watch. :)

5. Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

Ao no ExorcistSynopsis – Humans and demons are two sides of the same coin, as are Assiah and Gehenna, their respective worlds. The only way to travel between the realms is by the means of possession, like in ghost stories. However, Satan, the ruler of Gehenna, cannot find a suitable host to possess and therefore, remains imprisoned in his world. In a desperate attempt to conquer Assiah, he sends his son instead, intending for him to eventually grow into a vessel capable of possession by the demon king.

Ao, no Exorcist follows Rin Okumura who appears to be an ordinary, somewhat troublesome teenager—that is until one day he is ambushed by demons. His world turns upside down when he discovers that he is, in fact, the very son of Satan and that his demon father wishes for him to return so they can conquer Assiah together. Not wanting to join the king of Gehenna, Rin decides to begin training to become an exorcist so that he can fight to defend Assiah alongside his brother Yukio.

Ao no ExorcistSimilarity – Main characters, Rin and Yato, are both powerful supernatural beings as Rin is the son of Satan and Yato is a god. They both try to restore their honor and a place in the world, even for such goofs. The phantoms/demons in both worlds show a lot of similarities. Both sets in modern day with supernaturals run the world.

4. Blood Lad

Blood LadSynopsis – Blood Lad follows Staz, a vampire that is obsessed with the human world, and Fuyumi, a human girl that was killed and turned into a ghost after wandering into the demon world. Staz promises to help Fuyumi regain her humanity by bringing her back to life, as it means that he would be able to visit the human world

Blood LadSimilarity – Set in a modern time setting, the main female character’s life is changed forever one-day thanks to the handy dandy work of a supernatural being. But that’s not all that’s changed. Her life becomes involved with supernatural beings that revolve around cases that put her life in danger. The male protagonist strives to protect them and hopefully restore things back to order.
Expect action, drama, comedy, and humorous dialogues

3. Hataraku Maou-sama! (The Devil is a Part-Timer!)

Hataraku Maou-sama
Synopsis – Striking fear into the hearts of mortals, the Demon Lord Satan begins to conquer the land of Ente Isla with his vast demon armies. However, while embarking on this brutal quest to take over the continent, his efforts are foiled by the hero Emilia, forcing Satan to make his swift retreat through a dimensional portal only to land in the human world. Along with his loyal general Alsiel, the demon finds himself stranded in modern-day Tokyo and vows to return and complete his subjugation of Ente Isla—that is if they can find a way back!

Powerless in a world without magic, Satan assumes the guise of a human named Sadao Maou and begins working at MgRonald’s—a local fast-food restaurant—to make ends meet. He soon realizes that his goal of conquering Ente Isla is just not enough as he grows determined to climb the corporate ladder and become the ruler of Earth, one satisfied customer at a time!

Whether it’s part-time work, household chores, or simply trying to pay the rent on time, Hataraku Maou-sama! presents a hilarious view of the most mundane aspects of everyday life, all through the eyes of a hapless demon lord.

Hataraku Maou sama

Similarity – Both are about otherworldly beings trying to make a living in the human world, and both have action comedy vibe to it. Hataraku maou sama has a more comedic and light-hearted tone than noragami and both have likable characters, an interesting world, and overall plot looming in the background.

2. Kamisama Hajimemashita (Kamisama Hajimemashita

Synopsis – High schooler Nanami Momozono has quite a few problems of late, beginning with her absentee father being in such extreme debt that they lose everything. Downtrodden and homeless, she runs into a man being harassed by a dog. After helping him, she explains her situation, and to her surprise, he offers her his home in gratitude. But when she discovers that said home is a rundown shrine, she tries to leave; however, she is caught by two shrine spirits and a fox familiar named Tomoe. They mistake her for the man Nanami rescued—the land god of the shrine, Mikage. Realizing that Mikage must have sent her there as a replacement god, Tomoe leaves abruptly, refusing to serve a human.

Rather than going back to being homeless, Nanami immerses herself in her divine duties. But if she must keep things running smoothly, she will need the help of a certain hot-headed fox. In her fumbling attempt to seek out Tomoe, she lands in trouble and ends up sealing a contract with him. Now the two must traverse the path of godhood together as god and familiar; but it will not be easy, for new threats arise in the form of a youkai who wants to devour the girl, a snake that wants to marry her, and Nanami’s own unexpected feelings for her new familiar.

Kamisama Hajimemashita

Similarity – Both have the same girl to deity plot and the same scenario where the deity has to deal with other deities. The girl in one anime is a weakling, while the girl in the other anime can kick ass. The deity’s job in one anime is to protect the girl, while the deity in the other anime wants to be famous because he isn’t that popular.

1. Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary)

Kyoukai no KanataSynopsis – Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a clan of Spirit World warriors with the power to employ their blood as weapons. As such, Mirai is tasked with hunting down and killing “youmu”—creatures said to be the manifestation of negative human emotions. One day, while deep in thought on the school roof, Mirai comes across Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed of youmu in human form. In a panicked state, she plunges her blood saber into him only to realize that he’s an immortal being. From then on, the two form an impromptu friendship that revolves around Mirai constantly trying to kill Akihito, in an effort to boost her own wavering confidence as a Spirit World Warrior. Eventually, Akihito also manages to convince her to join the Literary Club, which houses two other powerful Spirit World Warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase.

As the group’s bond strengthens, however, so does the tenacity of the young around them. Their misadventures will soon turn into a fight for survival as the inevitable release of the most powerful youmu, Beyond the Boundary, approaches.

Kyoukai no Kanata

Similarity – Noragami and Kyoukai no Kanata are supernatural theme series involving spirits and apparitions. The main characters get themselves involved in a variety of ways that changes their lives while helping others.

Throughout both series, there are internal struggles explored regarding the main characters, in particular with their pasts that are reflected in flashback scenes. At the apex of the story, these internal struggles manifest and brings out feelings that are reflected in our characters’ reactions.
