10. Medaka Box

Medaka BoxSynopsis – Medaka Kurokami is, in the truest sense of the word, perfect. Beautiful, intelligent, and athletic, Medaka’s dream is to make others happy. So when she runs for Student Council President of the prestigious Hakoniwa Academy, winning the election with 98% of the votes is only to be expected. The very first thing the boisterous new president does is set up the “Medaka Box,” a suggestion box allowing students to submit any kind of request for assistance. For every job completed, she adds flowers to the student council room, with the aim of filling the entire school. However, the two are about to find out that helping others may be a lot harder than they think as they begin to uncover a devastating plan centering on the academy and even Medaka herself!

Similarity – Unique, eccentric and lovable characters brought to us by NisioIsin-sensei. Their unique use of gags and word play are themes of the series that give a different style in anime. Both series also have “romance” although exploited in a unique way. There are also ecchi in both of these series at different turn points.

9. Blade Dance of the Elementalers (Seireitsukai no Blade Dance)

Blade Dance of the Elementalers (Seireitsukai no Blade Dance)Synopsis – The story is set in Areishia Spirit Academy, where girls from noble families are educated to become spirit contractors. A boy named Kamito, a male spirit contractor whose existence Was believed to be impossible accidentally peeps on a girl named Clair while she was bathing, and forms a contract with the spirit she set her sights on. In order to make up for his mistake, Kamito must become Clair’s contracted spirit. With Claire demanding that he become her contracted spirit, will Kamito even manage to survive the entire two months until the tournament takes place?

Similarity – Both are Harem action anime with plenty of fan service. Both anime have dense male character and not only that but the main male protagonists are similar and contain a lot of humor courtesy of Shaft.

8. Mekakucity Actors

Mekakucity ActorsSynopsis – The incidents which occurred on August 14th and 15th bring a group of young boys and girls together… They are members of a group they call themselves the “Mekakushi Dan” (Blindfold Organization) and each member possesses a strange power involving their eyes. Their abilities seem to be like pieces of a puzzle, connecting with one another, and as each member’s past is unveiled, the secret that ties them together is slowly brought to light.

Similarity – If you enjoy Slam Dunk, you will likely enjoy GTO and vice versa. They are both classic anime comedies with a large fan base. Well written characters that you can’t help but love and cheer for and a hooking plot that keeps you coming back for more. There are lessons to be learned and inspiring moments to be had in both animes. Overall, similar art and feel as well but this is also characteristic of the times when the animes were made.

7. Arakawa Under the Bridge

Arakawa Under the BridgeSynopsis – Kou Ichinomiya is the son of a wealthy businessman who holds firm belief in his elite status. As such, he is determined to avoid becoming indebted to anyone; but one day, after a run-in with some mischievous kids on Arakawa Bridge, he ends up falling into the river running underneath. Luckily for him, a passerby is there to save him—but now, he owes his life to this stranger. Angered by this, Kou insists on paying her back, but this may just be the worst deal the arrogant businessman has ever made. The stranger—a stoic, tracksuit-wearing homeless girl known only as Nino—lives in a cardboard box under the bridge and wants only one thing: to fall in love.

Similarity – Both have the same Atmosphere, comedy, and randomess.both male leads, Koyomi and Kou are practically the same and have to deal with weirdos around them plus they got the same Seiyuu. Arakawa uses aliens as the source while Monogatari series is using ghosts, vampires etc and both are by SHAFT

6. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Sayonara Zetsubou SenseiSynopsis – Nozomu Itoshiki is a high school teacher so pessimistic that even the smallest of misfortunes can send him into a pit of raging despair; some of these “catastrophes” even lead to suicide attempts. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a satirical slice-of-life comedy set in the modern day, covering various aspects of Japanese life and culture through Nozomu and his interactions with his students: Kiri Komori, a recluse who refuses to leave the school; Abiru Kobushi, an enigma who frequently arrives to class with severe and mysterious injuries; the hyper-optimistic Kafuuka Fuura, Nozomu’s polar opposite; and several other unusual girls, all of whom are just as eccentric as their teacher.

Similarity – The usage of word play courtesy of Shaft exists in both of these series. Both series tend to avoid a direct/linear storyline but rather have a slice-of-lifish theme that explores the identities of the characters.
And of course with word plays means = random scenes with pictures depicting actions. Also, there is quite a large female cast in both series that has strange relationships with the main character.

5. My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute (Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai)

My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute (Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai)Synopsis – Kirino Kousaka embodies the ideal student with equally entrancing looks. Her grades are near perfect, and to cover her personal expenses, she works as a professional model alongside her best friend Ayase Aragaki, who abhors liars and all things otaku. But what Ayase doesn’t know is that Kirino harbors a deep, entrenched secret that will soon be brought to light. At home one day, Kyousuke, Kirino’s perfectly average brother, stumbles upon an erotic game that belongs to none other than his seemingly flawless little sister. Through Kirino, Kyousuke encounters the gothic lolita Ruri Gokou and the bespectacled otaku Saori Makishima. But as he becomes more and more involved in his little sister’s secret life, it becomes that much harder to keep under wraps.

Similarity – Both anime are about the brother and sister relationship. The two series share similar art styles and storyboarding. The settings of both are also very similar and create very fun and interesting backdrops for the characters to light up and interact in. If you enjoyed Nisemonogatari theme you’ll enjoy My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute as well.

4. Is this A Zombie? of the Dead (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? of the Dead)

Kore wa Zombie Desu kaSynopsis – Aikawa Ayumu was revived as a zombie by the cute necromancer Eucliwood Hellscythe. After the zany, madcap adventures in the first season of Is This a Zombie? ended, Ayumu thought his life might finally get back to normal, or as normal as it can be for a zombie. However, destiny has other plans for him. Some guys just can’t catch a break.

Similarity – Both have an inhuman as the main protagonist and both tell about the daily lives of the main protagonist, despite them being inhuman. I love how the second seasons are filled with humor and ecchi instead of being all serious like their prequels.

3. B: The Beginning

B The BeginningSynopsis – In a world powered by advanced technology, crime and action unfold in the archipelagic nation of Cremona. Koku, the protagonist. Keith, the legendary investigator of the royal police force RIS. A mysterious criminal organization. A wide variety of characters race through the fortified city as it is beset by the serial killer, Killer B, and a chain of crimes in this suspense drama by director Kazuto Nakazawa and Production I.G

Similarity – Both of the main character Flick & kaiki Deishuu had same gloomy personalities. In Nisemonogatari the mystery is about natural phenomenon and in B: The Beginning is more about Police stuff. But still, these two show really similar to each other in terms of mystery.

2. The Tatami Galaxy (Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei)

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy)Synopsis – One autumn evening at a mysterious ramen stand behind the Shimogamo Shrine, a lonely third-year college student bumps into a man with an eggplant-shaped head who calls himself a god of matrimony. Meeting this man causes the student to reflect upon his past two years at college—two years bitterly spent trying to break up couples on campus with his only friend Ozu, a ghoulish-looking man seemingly set on making his life as miserable as possible. Resolving to make the most out of the rest of his college life, the student attempts to ask out the unsociable but kind-hearted underclassman Akashi, yet fails to follow through, prompting him to regret not living out his college life differently. As soon as this thought passes through his head, however, he is hurtled through time and space to the beginning of his years at college and given another chance to live his life.

Similarity – While having witty humor, both are artsy, dialogue driven and character focused. There is some similar humor and some similar use of abrupt changes in animation style to show changes in characters’ emotions.

1. Sankarea: Undying Love

Sankarea Undying LoveSynopsis – Chihiro Furuya, who loves zombies above all else, meets the sweet girl Rea Sanka by chance, and he ropes her into “resurrecting” his dead cat. Eventually, he succeeds with the help of the poisonous hydrangea flowers from Rea’s family garden. Unaware of the potion’s success and seeking to escape the burdens of her life, Rea drinks the resurrection potion, mistakenly thinking she will die. But then Rea claims she actually has become a zombie and asks him to take responsibility for it.

Similarity – Similarly trippy styles of direction. Protagonists who mess with the supernatural in somewhat serious ways. Sankarea surprised me with the art style. It was very surreal and cinematic and immediately reminded me of a Shaft show. Both anime involve comedy and romance as well as fanservice.
