10. Toaru Majutsu no Index

Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)
Synopsis – Academy City, Japan, is at the forefront of science. Besides being 30 years ahead of the world technologically, more than three-fourths of this peculiar city’s population consists of students developing their psychic abilities as espers in various institutions. Among these students is Touma Kamijou, a high school boy with the lowest psychic rank of zero, but with a mysterious power no scientist can understand: “Imagine Breaker,” which allows him to negate other supernatural abilities.

This, however, doesn’t affect Kamijou’s life in the least as he plays his role as a regular teenager; that is until he meets the strange Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young girl who has memorized the entire forbidden grimoires, and now a dangerous organization is hunting Index down. With several magicians looking to harm the girl, Kamijou will defend his new companion at all costs as he discovers a strange new realm of the supernatural.

Similarity –Both Mahouka and Index feature a world of science and magic with seemingly “weak” male main character who display their true strength by disabling the abilities of their opponents. Tatsuya definitely becomes a lot more overpowered as he reveals more of his abilities throughout the season though. On the other hand, Touma only has his Imagine Breaker but he occasionally finds novel ways of using his ability that help to keep the action going.

9. No Game No Life

No Game No LifeSynopsis – No Game No Life is a surreal comedy that follows Sora and Shiro, shut-in NEET siblings and the online gamer duo behind the legendary username “Blank.” They view the real world as just another lousy game; however, a strange e-mail challenging them to a chess match changes everything—the brother and sister are plunged into an otherworldly realm where they meet Tet, the God of Games.

The mysterious god welcomes Sora and Shiro to Disboard, a world where all forms of conflict—from petty squabbles to the fate of whole countries—are settled not through war, but by way of high-stake games. This system works thanks to a fundamental rule wherein each party must wager something they deem to be of equal value to the other party’s wager. In this strange land where the very idea of humanity is reduced to child’s play, the indifferent genius gamer duo of Sora and Shiro have finally found a real reason to keep playing games: to unite the sixteen races of Disboard, defeat Tet, and become the gods of this new, gaming-is-everything world.

Similarity – Both of these animes have two main characters which are:
– Both brother and sister;
– Both have a special relationship with each other;
– Both are geniuses/are completely overpowered compared to the rest of the cast;
– Both put each other as their top priority in almost anything.
The shows are also similar in that they have the occasional strategic fights between the protagonists and antagonists. They also have their own level of magic set throughout the plot, although one is more fantasy while the other more not-so-distant future (urban modern environment). Both of the shows also have very colourful and vibrant color pallets and designs. And have harem elements with ecchi

8. Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These – Kaikou

Synopsis- The 150-year-long stalemate between the two interstellar superpowers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, comes to an end when a new generation of leaders arises: the idealistic military genius Reinhard von Lohengramm, and the FPA’s reserved historian, Yang Wenli.

While Reinhard climbs the ranks of the Empire with the aid of his childhood friend, Siegfried Kircheis, he must fight not only the war, but also the remnants of the crumbling Goldenbaum Dynasty in order to free his sister from the Kaiser and unify humanity under one genuine ruler. Meanwhile, on the other side of the galaxy, Yang—a strong supporter of democratic ideals—has to stand firm in his beliefs, despite the struggles of the FPA, and show his pupil, Julian Mintz, that autocracy is not the solution.

As ideologies clash amidst the war’s many casualties, the two strategic masterminds must ask themselves what the real reason behind their battle is.

Similarity – both portray a single individual who is well versed in politic and military conduct, while bearing a personal burden due to unfavorable circumstances in the past and has a complex relationship with his only sibling that would later define him as a character.

7. Little Witch Academia (TV)

Little Witch AcademiaSynopsis – “A believing heart is your magic!”—these were the words that Atsuko “Akko” Kagari’s idol, the renowned witch Shiny Chariot, said to her during a magic performance years ago. Since then, Akko has lived by these words and aspired to be a witch just like Shiny Chariot, one that can make people smile. Hence, even her non-magical background does not stop her from enrolling in Luna Nova Magical Academy.

However, when an excited Akko finally sets off to her new school, the trip there is anything but smooth. After her perilous journey, she befriends the shy Lotte Yansson and the sarcastic Sucy Manbavaran. To her utmost delight, she also discovers Chariot’s wand, the Shiny Rod, which she takes as her own. Unfortunately, her time at Luna Nova will prove to more challenging than Akko could ever believe. She absolutely refuses to stay inferior to the rest of her peers, especially to her self-proclaimed rival, the beautiful and gifted Diana Cavendish, so she relies on her determination to compensate for her reckless behavior and ineptitude in magic.

Similarity – This recommendation is not based on similar narrative, characters or even themes, but on their settings. Little Witch Academia and The Irregular at Magic High School are series set in worlds where magic exists and students learn it at school, but introduces this subject from different perspectives. The Irregular at Magic High School creates a world based on an alternative history where magic is enhanced by modern technology. Little Witch Academia creates a world where magic has become diminished and a relic. The magic schools are completely different from each other, but are believable for their respective worlds

6. Gakusen Toshi Asterisk

Synopsis – Long, long ago, an epic catastrophe, known as Invertia, caused a complete change in the world’s power balance. In the years following this disaster, a group known as the Integrated Enterprise Foundation rose to power. In addition to this massive change, a new breed of humans born with amazing physical skills known as Genestella also emerged and joined the ranks of humanity.

Gakusen Toshi Asterisk follows the story of Ayato Amagiri, a student who has just transferred into one of the six most elite schools for Genestella students in the world—Seidoukan Academy—where students learn to control their powers and duel against each other in entertainment battles known as festas. Unfortunately, Ayato gets off to a rough start. When trying to return a lost handkerchief to a female classmate, he accidentally sees her changing which leads to her challenging him to a duel. What most people don’t realize, however, is that Ayato has no real interest in festas and instead has an alternative motive for joining this prestigious school. What is Ayato’s big secret? Will he be able to keep up his act when surrounded by some of the greatest Genestella in the world?

Similarity – Main characters are both powerful and have limiters.
Magic related items
Both high schools themed
So, here we have two shows based on the idea of an op main character in a magic school that fights other schools in competitions and things. Characters are very similar and to be honest their storyline can be seen as very similar (except Asterisk was much shorter).

5. Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e (TV)

Synopsis –On the surface, Koudo Ikusei Senior High School is a utopia. The students enjoy an unparalleled amount of freedom, and it is ranked highly in Japan. However, the reality is less than ideal. Four classes, A through D, are ranked in order of merit, and only the top classes receive favorable treatment.

Kiyotaka Ayanokouji is a student of Class D, where the school dumps its worst. There he meets the unsociable Suzune Horikita, who believes she was placed in Class D by mistake and desires to climb all the way to Class A, and the seemingly amicable class idol Kikyou Kushida, whose aim is to make as many friends as possible.

While class membership is permanent, class rankings are not; students in lower ranked classes can rise in rankings if they score better than those in the top ones. Additionally, in Class D, there are no bars on what methods can be used to get ahead. In this cutthroat school, can they prevail against the odds and reach the top?

Similarity – Its basically almost like the same series with the same premise, with almost the same MC. The Main Character is a student from a prestigious school, but unfortunately, they’re assigned to the class that is meant for the worst student because of their bad entrance exam, either because a loophole in the entrance exam/purposefully failed. As the show progress, we realize that the main protagonist is actually secretly a genius. Both of their personality is almost completely the same: emotionally detached and cunning. Both of their origin stories is pretty similar too, with quite a few differences. And the way the protagonist wins through an unorthodox, cunning way that showcases their geniuses is pretty similar too. While Mahouka is more about science-magic, Classroom of the Elite is about a power play between each class.

4. Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica

Synopsis – About thirty years prior to the start of Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica, a number of selected people from Earth were summoned to other worlds with only about half of them being able to return. One of the young people chosen was Akatsuki Ousawa, who was sent to Alayzard to defeat the Dark Lord Garius, which he did, before returning to his original world. Some of the successful chosen ones brought back little trinkets as souvenirs. Akatsuki, on the other hand, went a different route—he brought back the defeated Dark Lord’s daughter, Miu, who is now posing as his long-lost little sister!

Upon returning, Akatsuki and Miu are forced to join a special school called BABEL where they must train to one day master the powers they gained in Alayzard, in hopes that they will one day be able to serve mankind. Will Akatsuki and Miu be able to keep her true identity a secret or will their plan to live peaceful lives together go up in flames?

Similarity –
Both have the same setting where it is set in a magical school.
Both involve the same brother and sister tandem attending the same school and are in the same year level.
Both have the same action, magic, adventure and supernatural genre.
Both have the same character where the brother is a top performing student.

3. Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records

Synopsis – The Alzano Empire is home to one of the most distinguished magic schools in the world: the Alzano Imperial Magic Academy. Here, ambitious young students undergo training to become competent magicians. Sistine Fibel, a stern noble girl, and her bright-eyed best friend Rumia Tingel attend the Academy, determined to cultivate their magical skills.

However, their world is thrown for a loop when their favorite teacher suddenly retires and the enigmatic Glenn Radars replaces him. His lazy and indifferent attitude toward life and magic quickly puts him at odds with his class. What’s more, nefarious forces hidden within the empire’s walls start to become active, and Sistine, Rumia, and Glenn find themselves caught up in their schemes.

Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records follows Sistine, who is captivated by a mysterious floating Sky Castle; Rumia, who is haunted by a troubled past; and Glenn, who may be more than meets the eye. Though completely different on the surface, they are inexplicably bound together by a thread of fate.

Similarity – For one, both Glenn and Tatsuya are overpowered. Both involve displaying magic that’s fun to watch and creates epic battle scenarios and tension at the same time. Both have one main character ship; for the Irregular at Magic High School, it’s Tatsuya and Miyuki, and for Akashic, I’d say Glenn and Sistine although there’s a huge age difference, but they work well together.

2. Grisaia no Kajitsu

Synopsis – Yuuji Kazami is a transfer student who has just been admitted into Mihama Academy. He wants to live an ordinary high school life, but this dream of his may not come true any time soon as Mihama Academy is quite the opposite. Consisting of only the principal and five other students, all of whom are girls, Yuuji becomes acquainted with each of them, discovering more about their personalities as socialization is inevitable. Slowly, he begins to learn about the truth behind the small group of students occupying the academy—they each have their own share of traumatic experiences which are tucked away from the world.

Mihama Academy acts as a home for these girls, they are the “fruit” which fell from their trees and have begun to decay. It is up to Yuuji to become the catalyst to save them from themselves, but how can he save another when he cannot even save himself?

Similarity – Fruit of Grisaia and Irregular, oh man. Where do I begin? The badass main character, the ridiculous harem, the overplayed enemies of the main cast. They are so similar it’s physically painful. Except, what is this? Grisaia is better. Why? It’s simple. Because Grisaia is horribly aware of what it is. It’s a harem show with an awesome protagonist doing awesome thing. The creators know it and they break nearly every stereotype it sets. Irregular insults the audience’s intelligence. They divert your attention with lengthy meta-explanations and incest they pretend isn’t there. Not a single person in this entire cast was worth anything to the main story. NOTHING. You could’ve changed any of their personalities, destroyed any of their backstories/existence, and the story would’ve been the same.

1. Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry

Synopsis – There exist few humans in this world with the ability to manipulate their souls to form powerful weapons. Dubbed “Blazers,” these people study and train at the prestigious Hagun Academy to become Mage-Knights; among the students is so-called failure Ikki Kurogane, the sole F-rated Blazer. However, when the worst student in the academy sees Stella Vermillion, an A-ranked Blazer who also happens to be a princess, naked, she challenges him to a duel with dire stakes—the loser becomes the slave of the winner. There’s no possible way that Stella can lose, right?

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry follows the story of Ikki as he tries to prove his strength to a world that believes him to be the weakest, all the while gaining new friends, wisdom, and experience.

Similarity – Both protagonists are deemed the weakest (in magic) and berated by his peers in their school, but only because the evaluations of them are selective, which neglects their other superior strong points (their physical abilities) that may even surpass other so-called “geniuses.”
They live together with the heroine, who is considered the complete opposite of the protagonist, the strongest and most talented, and thus revered for their skills.
