10. Kyoukaisenjou no Horizon

Synopsis – In the far future, humans abandon a devastated Earth and traveled to outer space. However, due to an unknown phenomenon that prevents them from traveling into space, humanity returns to Earth only to find it inhospitable except for Japan.

To accommodate the entire human population, pocket dimensions are created around Japan to house in the populace. In order to find a way to return to outer space, the humans began reenacting human history according to the Holy book Testament. But in the year 1413 of the Testament Era, the nations of the pocket dimensions invade and conquer Japan, dividing the territory into feudal fiefdoms and forcing the original inhabitants of Japan to leave.

It is now the year 1648 of the Testament Era, the refugees of Japan now live in the city ship Musashi, where it constantly travels around Japan while being watched by the Testament Union, the authority that runs the re-enactment of history. However, rumors of an apocalypse and war begin to spread when the Testament stops revealing what happens next after 1648.

Taking advantage of this situation, Toori Aoi, head of Musashi Ariadust Academy’s Supreme Federation and President of the student council, leads his fellow classmates to use this opportunity to regain their homeland.

Similarity –Both offers in-depth social, economy, politics, diplomacy exploration and a lot of characters which are unique from each other. Both also have very long dialogue and monologue but Kyoukaisenjou no Horizon has more action than Log Horizon.

9. Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku

Death March to The Parallel World RhapsodySynopsis – 29-year-old programmer Suzuki Ichirou finds himself transported into a fantasy RPG. Within the game, he’s a 15-year-old named Satou. At first, he thinks he’s dreaming, but his experiences seem very real. Due to a powerful ability, he possesses with limited use, he ends up wiping out an army of lizard men and becomes a high leveled adventurer. Satou decides to hide his level and plans to live peacefully and meet new people. However, developments in the game’s story, such as the return of a demon king, may cause a nuisance to Satou’s plans.

Similarity – Game mechanics are important as the setting of the anime. They place importance on life or death in HP and remain as a character’s lifeline throughout the whole anime as a game mechanic.
The game’s nature is fantasy. Swords and magic skills are decided.

8. Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou kaSynopsis- Life in the bustling city of Orario is never dull, especially for Bell Cranel, a naïve young man who hopes to become the greatest adventurer in the land. After a chance encounter with the lonely goddess, Hestia, his dreams become a little closer to reality. With her support, Bell embarks on a fantastic quest as he ventures deep within the city’s monster-filled catacombs, known only as the “Dungeon.” Death lurks around every corner in the cavernous depths of this terrifying labyrinth, and a mysterious power moves amidst the shadows.

Even on the surface, survival is a hard-earned privilege. Indeed, nothing is ever certain in a world where gods and humans live and work together, especially when they often struggle to get along. One thing is for sure, though: a myriad of blunders, triumphs, and friendships awaits the dauntlessly optimistic protagonist of this herculean tale.

Similarity – Both have been clearly influenced by RPGs. Where DanMachi is a fantasy adventure using RPG inspired leveling as a plot device, Log Horizon is about gamers who are literally sucked into the world of their favorite RPG.
Both are based on finding a group of people who you can rely on to help you survive. In DanMachi its all about finding a Familia and in Log Horizon it’s about having a Guild.

7. Btooom!

BTOOOMSynopsis – Ryouta Sakamoto is unemployed and lives with his mother, his only real achievement being that he is Japan’s top player of the popular online video game, “Btooom!” However, his peaceful life is about to change when he finds himself stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere, with a small, green crystal embedded in his left hand and no memory of how he got there. To his shock, someone has decided to recreate the game he is so fond of in real life, with the stakes being life or death.

Armed with a bag full of unique bombs known as “BIM,” the players are tasked with killing seven of their fellow participants to obtain their green crystals, used as proof of their victory, in order to return home. Initially condemning any form of violence, Ryouta is forced to fight when he realizes that many of the other players are not as welcoming as they may seem. Teaming up with Himiko, a fellow Btooom! player who turns out to be his in-game wife, they attempt to get off of the island together, slowly coming closer and closer to the truth behind this contest of death.

Similarity – The environment that both series take place in has a similar concept but with different circumstances.
As for our main characters, they are stuck in an isolated area from the outside world where they must survive. Btooom! takes more of a serious tone, while Log Horizon is much more lighthearted. However, there are many mechanics behind both series that are explored relating to their circumstances.
The main male protagonists are also gamers with experience in the gaming world.

6. Ookami to Koushinryou

Synopsis – Holo is a powerful wolf deity who is celebrated and revered in the small town of Pasloe for blessing the annual harvest. Yet as years go by and the villagers become more self-sufficient, Holo, who stylizes herself as the “Wise Wolf of Yoitsu,” has been reduced to a mere folk tale. When a traveling merchant named Kraft Lawrence stops at Pasloe, Holo offers to become his business partner if he eventually takes her to her northern home of Yoitsu. The savvy trader recognizes Holo’s unusual ability to evaluate a person’s character and accepts her proposition. Now in the possession of both sharp business skills and a charismatic negotiator, Lawrence inches closer to his goal of opening his own shop. However, as Lawrence travels the countryside with Holo in search of economic opportunities, he begins to realize that his aspirations are slowly morphing into something unexpected.

Based on the popular light novel of the same name, Ookami to Koushinryou, also known as Spice and Wolf, fuses the two polar genres of economics and romance to create an enthralling story abundant with elaborate schemes, sharp humor, and witty dialogue. Ookami to Koushinryou is more than just a story of bartering; it turns into a journey of searching for a lost identity in an ever-changing world.

Similarity – Both animes are in a fantasy setting and dedicates its time on the growth of politics and power through manipulative means. You will not expect much action from either of these titles, as the engaging dialogues will make up for the ‘action’. The action is there, but it isn’t dragged out more than necessary. You can also expect military and war will also involve in both these shows.

5. Accel World

Accel World
Synopsis –Haruyuki Arita is an overweight, bullied middle schooler who finds solace in playing online games. But his life takes a drastic turn one day when he finds that all his high scores have been topped by Kuroyukihime, the popular vice president of the student council. She then invites him to the student lounge and introduces him to “Brain Burst,” a program which allows the users to accelerate their brainwaves to the point where time seems to stop. Brain Burst also functions as an augmented reality fighting game, and in order to get more points to accelerate, users must win duels against other players. However, if a user loses all their points, they will also lose access to Brain Burst forever.

Kuroyukihime explains that she chose to show Haruyuki the program because she needs his help. She wants to meet the creator of Brain Burst and uncover the reason of why it was created, but that’s easier said than done; to do so, she must defeat the “Six Kings of Pure Color,” powerful faction leaders within the game, and reach level 10, the highest level attainable. After the girl helps Haruyuki overcome the bullies that torment him, he vows to help her realize her goal, and so begins the duo’s fight to reach the top.

Similarity – Accel World and Log Horizon take place in a virtual realm where there are fantasy elements such as avatars and weapons to be utilized for combat. The main male protagonist becomes part of that world along with other characters.
There are combat scenarios that rely on strategy both mentally and physically. The battles themselves are presented in a shounen-like way with quick movements, thinking, and brutality. Surprisingly enough, both series’ OST has a catchy tone that matches the battle phases of duels/conquests.
There is also a comedy with a dose of cuteness involving some of the characters and their interactions.

4. Hai to Gensou no Grimgar

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions)
Synopsis – Fear, survival, instinct. Thrown into a foreign land with nothing but hazy memories and the knowledge of their name, they can feel only these three emotions resonating deep within their souls. A group of strangers is given no other choice than to accept the only paying job in this game-like world—the role of a soldier in the Reserve Army—and eliminate anything that threatens the peace in their new world, Grimgar.

When all of the stronger candidates join together, those left behind must create a party together to survive: Manato, a charismatic leader, and priest; Haruhiro, a nervous thief; Yume, a cheerful hunter; Shihoru, a shy mage; Mogzo, a kind warrior; and Ranta, a rowdy dark knight. Despite its resemblance to one, this is no game—there are no redos or respawns; it is killed or be killed.

It is now up to this ragtag group of unlikely fighters to survive together in a world where life and death are separated only by a fine line.

Similarity – Similar ‘trapped in a fantasy game’ concepts with a focus on the characters and world rather than action/adventure, where most of the main characters are all part of a guild or party. Both have elements of memory loss as well. There is one very major difference which is also a huge spoiler to LH, which affects both stories quite a bit. Basically, the plots are extremely different, but the settings, themes, and characters are almost identical.

3. No Game No Life

Anime With Less Than 30 Episodes
Synopsis – No Game No Life is a surreal comedy that follows Sora and Shiro, shut-in NEET siblings and the online gamer duo behind the legendary username “Blank.” They view the real world as just another lousy game; however, a strange e-mail challenging them to a chess match changes everything—the brother and sister are plunged into an otherworldly realm where they meet Tet, the God of Games.

The mysterious god welcomes Sora and Shiro to Disboard, a world where all forms of conflict—from petty squabbles to the fate of whole countries—are settled not through war, but by way of high-stake games. This system works thanks to a fundamental rule wherein each party must wager something they deem to be of equal value to the other party’s wager. In this strange land where the very idea of humanity is reduced to child’s play, the indifferent genius gamer duo of Sora and Shiro have finally found a real reason to keep playing games: to unite the sixteen races of Disboard, defeat Tet, and become the gods of this new, gaming-is-everything world.

Similarity – Both involve people getting trapped in a game/different world and have the same genre. The group of people in one anime starts as a three-player team, while in the other anime, it was a brother and sister tandem. One immediately started in a situation where the players are already in the game/ another world, while the duo first started off being in their world before crossing over.

2. Overlord

OverlordSynopsis – The final hour of the popular virtual reality game Yggdrasil has come. However, Momonga, a powerful wizard and master of the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown, decides to spend his last few moments in the game as the servers begin to shut down. To his surprise, despite the clock has struck midnight, Momonga is still fully conscious as his character and, moreover, the non-player characters appear to have developed personalities of their own!

Confronted with this abnormal situation, Momonga commands his loyal servants to help him investigate and take control of this new world, with the hopes of figuring out what has caused this development and if there may be others in the same predicament.

Similarity – a Same concept about being stuck in an RPG world. However, what these two does is creating an economy and a leading world so they can keep the world going. These have low focus and how to get out and has a lot to do with adapting to their new setting. They’re both very strategical anime and is heavy-dialogue anime which doesn’t focus on action that much. What I do think these anime series could have evolved was giving out a plotline which they’d follow instead of taking irrelevant side quest. However what Log Horizon did better was in a way or two using these side quest to create something for the plotline however Overlord used these merely as a plot tool and didn’t really develop much on anything at all. Overlord didn’t have a deep storyline and characters as Log Horizon which is something you might consider for a simple watch, however, if you’re looking to expand on a storyline I’d highly recommend Log Horizon. Remember that Log Horizon has a seriously slow plot line while Overlord has a fast-paced plotline since it is quite rushed, which might give you some quick watch entertainment. They’re both good series to enjoy

1. Sword Art Online

Sword Art OnlineSynopsis – In the year 2022, virtual reality has progressed by leaps and bounds, and a massive online role-playing game called Sword Art Online (SAO) is launched. With the aid of “NerveGear” technology, players can control their avatars within the game using nothing but their own thoughts.

Kazuto Kirigaya, nicknamed “Kirito,” is among the lucky few enthusiasts who get their hands on the first shipment of the game. He logs in to find himself, with ten-thousand others, in the scenic and elaborate world of Aincrad, one full of fantastic medieval weapons and gruesome monsters. However, in a cruel turn of events, the players soon realize they cannot log out; the game’s creator has trapped them in his new world until they complete all one hundred levels of the game.

In order to escape Aincrad, Kirito will now have to interact and cooperate with his fellow players. Some are allies, while others are foes, like Asuna Yuuki, who commands the leading group attempting to escape from the ruthless game. To make matters worse, Sword Art Online is not all fun and games: if they die in Aincrad, they die in real life. Kirito must adapt to his new reality, fight for his survival, and hopefully break free from his virtual hell.

Similarity – the Main similarity is that both anime features living within the game and in real life. There is the idea of being a member of a community and adventure and exploring the world that the protagonists live in. Both anime are special in their own way such as the contrasting protagonists. Both have good art quality as well and if you like action and fantasy anime, these two are definitely recommendable.
