Similarity –Even though both of these anime are very different, they have 1 thing in common: Basketball,
If you like Kuroko no Basket it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll like Basquash however if you like basketball do give it a try, visa versa as well.

9. Chihayafuru

Synopsis – Chihaya Ayase is a frank and ebullient girl who becomes fascinated by the obscure world of competitive karuta, a card game based on Japanese poetry. Introduced to the aggressive style of the game by a quiet and thoughtful elementary school classmate named Arata Wataya, the two quickly become close friends. They start playing as a group with Taichi Mashima, Chihaya’s smart and athletic childhood friend, until they have to part ways during their middle school years due to several circumstances. As their high school life begins, they meet once again.

Similarity – Both are fantastic sports anime that focus not only on the sport but on the individual characters and their journey on perfecting the way they play and inventing new strategies. Chihayafuru and Kuroko No Basuke have such detailed characters that have weaknesses and strengths that affect their play in heavy ways.

8. One Outs

One OutSynopsis- Hiromichi Kojima, the star batter of the Lycaons, heads to Okinawa to train and bring himself out of a slump. There, he meets Toua Tokuchi, a 134 km/h (83 mph) pitcher and the undisputed king of a gambling form of baseball called “One Out”. At Kojima’s urging, Tokuchi signs up with the Lycaons. His contract differs from the usual, though, in that he gets 5,000,000 yen for every out he pitches, but loses 50,000,000 yen for every point he gives up.

Similarity – Both are incredibly interesting sports anime where an physically “weak” protagonist uses unusual sports techniques to advance in their respective sports. One Outs being Baseball, Kuroko No Basket being Basketball. Both deal with various different teams and switches character perspectives quite often.

7. Fighting Spirit

Hajime no Ippo (Fighting Spirit)Synopsis – Makunouchi Ippo has been bullied his entire life. Constantly running errands and being beaten up by his classmates, Ippo has always dreamed of changing himself, but never has the passion to act upon it. As he regains consciousness, he is awed and amazed at his new surroundings in the gym, though lacks confidence to attempt anything. Takamura places a photo of Ippo’s classmate on a punching bag and forces him to punch it. It is only then that Ippo feels something stir inside him and eventually asks Takamura to train him in boxing. Thinking that Ippo does not have what it takes, Takamura gives him a task deemed impossible and gives him a one-week time limit. With a sudden desire to get stronger, for himself and his hard working mother, Ippo trains relentlessly to accomplish the task within the time limit. Thus Ippo’s journey to the top of the boxing world begins.

Similarity – Both animes is just the best of the Sports genre, you will get the highest possible excitement in every battle or game, everything from the characters to the OST will give you the maximum adrenaline that will make you glued to the screen.

6. Ace of Diamond

Synopsis – Eijun Sawamura is a pitcher who joins an elite school with a brilliant catcher named Kazuya Miyuki. Together with the rest of the team, they strive for Japan’s storied Koushien championships through hard work and determination.

Similarity – Diamond no ace is a fantastic anime. In comparison to kuroko no Baske it has the same competitive feel of wanting to surpass your rivals and learning from the past mistakes. It also has that alluring suspense of when you don’t know what’s going to happen next or if they’ll beat the opposing teams.

5. Eyeshield 21 (TV)

Eyeshield 21
Synopsis –Kobayakawa Sena is a little guy who always get picked on by the bullies in school. Since elementary school, he always play the role of the ‘errand boy’ to the extent that he has become swift and fast in his movements. Coincidentally, Hiruma Youichi and Kurita Ryukan are looking for a fast running back for their American Football team (Amefuto) and want to put Sena in the team. To hide their new ‘star’ player from the eyes of other High Schools, Hiruma encases Sena in a Amefuto helmet with a dark visor and name him Eyeshield #21.

Similarity – Underdogs challenging other high school sports teams to become no. 1. They have individual “special moves” used in the games. These special moves, their tricks, is used to make the games interesting and stylish. The main character of both animes hides themselves while playing their sport and are seen as small, timid and weak.

4. Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club

Free Iwatobi Swim Club
Synopsis – Four boys named Haruka, Makoto, Nagisa and Rin all participated in a swimming tournament shortly before graduating elementary school and later parted ways. Years later, they reunite when Rin challenges Haruka to a race and wins. Not wanting to be defeated so easily, Haruka gathers Makoto and Nagisa and a new recruit named Rei to form the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club.

Similarity – Both series are about a group of boys trying to accomplish something sports-related. Though Free! is more slice-of-life and Kuroko no Basket is more typical shounen, they have some similarities. Both Kuroko and Haruka (the main characters) have the same “kuudere” way of interacting with people. If you enjoy the humor of Free!, the humor in KnB will surely amuse you. While Free! has a lot of fanservice, KnB has little of the sort, but if you like bishounens, both series will appeal to you!

3. Hoop Days

Synopsis – Dear Boys is a story about determination to excel in a sport in which you love and also have fun at the same time. The tension as underdogs in the whole prefecture with only 5 players. How this team struggle to win, setbacks, teamwork, a purpose in life. This story relates to our lives as we strive to do our best, not just in sports, school but also relationships between friends and ones we love.

Similarity – both are about basketball. In this regard both deal with the theme of basketball played for fun opposed to the sole purpose of basketball being to win. Aikawa (of Dear Boys) and Kuroko (of KnB) are both characters that come from a school renowned for its basketball team and both essentially “abandon” their old teams to start anew in order to play competitive basketball which is also fun. Ignoring the stark personality differences between Aikawa and Kuroko, they’re in similar positions that make them the same. They both are well respected by their former teammates and considered something similar to childhood friends who’ve seen different sides to them that their current teams haven’t seen. Both are also set up to face their former teammates in order to succeed in their goals.

2. Slam Dunk

Synopsis – Sakuragi Hanamichi is a junior high punk used to getting into fights and being rejected by girls but upon entering high school he meets the girl of his dreams, Haruko Akagi. He will do anything in order to win her heart including joining the school basketball team that is aiming to conquer the nation lead by Haruko’s brother. The problem is that Sakuragi has never played basketball before and a freshman sensation is stealing the spotlight and Haruko’s affection from him.

Similarity – Both of the anime are sports anime, which is basketball. Besides that both of the shows have the same genre and types, comedy, school, shounen and sports which is the spotlight why I made this recommendation. Both of these anime have a good characters, good story plot and interesting/worth watching. However, the only difference is that Kuroko no Basuke was a “little” impossible if you based it in some real basketball plays while Slam Dunk can be. Both of the series should be watch if you really like a sports/comedy/shounen/school anime. Since both of this anime is worth watching and you’ll not regret about those.

1. Haikyuu!!

HaikyuuSynopsis – Shōyō Hinata began playing volleyball after seeing the “small giants” who played the sport when he was in elementary school. He suffers a crushing defeat in his first and last tournament in middle school at the hands of his rival Tobio Kageyama. So, Hinata joins Kurasuno High School’s volleyball team, vowing revenge against Kageyama. However, Kageyama is also on Kurasuno’s team. The former rivals form a legendary combo with Hinata’s mobility and Kageyama’s precision ball-handling. Together, they take on the local tournaments and vow to meet Kurasuno’s fated rival school in the nationals.

Similarity – The first thing I thought of when I started watching this anime was Kuroko no Basket. In relation to Kuroko no Basket, two players with extraordinary talent need one another in order to reach their full potential. In Haikyuu!!, Kageyama and Hinata were enemies at first, but end up playing for the same team when they enter high school. Kageyama is only interested in being a setter and Hinata strongly prefers being a spiker. The two must learn to work together in order to form a perfect duo to be the team that can stay on the court the longest.
