Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada ShiranaiSynopsis – Five childhood friends grow apart after the death of Meiko Honma, close playmate of them all. Jinta Yadomi, leader of the group when they were kids, neglects high school and lives as a shut-in when he unexpectedly starts seeing the ghost of Meiko, who can only interact with him and no one else. She has returned to ask Jinta to fulfill the forgotten wish she made as a kid. Jinta and his group of childhood friends grew apart after her untimely death, but they are drawn together once more as they try to lay Menma’s spirit to rest. Re-living their pain and guilt, will they be able to find the strength to help not only Menma move on—but themselves as well?

Similarity – These two shows are about a group of teenagers suddenly being forced into a situation where they have to connect and become closer to each other. There are a few characters with similar personalities or in similar situations. Many of the characters also undergo character development, and their relationships with each other improve. Plus both have sort of similar art style and great music.

9. Kokoro Connect

Kokoro ConnectSynopsis – Kokoro Connect revolves around the daily, not so normal lives of Taichi, Iori, Himeko, Yoshifumi and Yui and their encounters in the Cultural Research Club. Up until recently they thought that they and their friends lived normal happy lives, but now the Heartseed is pulling their lives apart and exposing their inner secrets through body switching, urges and age regression.

Similarity – All of the characters of both series are brought together through events none had asked for. They are tasked with understanding each others pains both emotionally and physically. A seemingly usual day like none other will soon spiral into a chaotic array of self discovery, growth of interpersonal relationships, and unwanted thoughts are brought to the surface. Unconscious decisions are suddenly questioned and naïve ones could prove fatal.

8. Hamatora The Animation

Hamatora The AnimationSynopsis – The ability to create miracles is not just a supernatural phenomenon; it is a gift which manifests in a limited number of human beings. “Minimum,” or small miracles, are special powers that only selected people called “Minimum Holders” possess. The detective agency Yokohama Troubleshooting, or Hamatora for short, is composed of the “Minimum Holder PI Duo,” Nice and Murasaki. Their office is a lone table at Cafe Nowhere, where the pair and their coworkers await new clients. Suddenly, the jobs that they begin to receive seem to have strange connections to the serial killer whom their friend Art, a police officer, is searching for. The murder victims share a single similarity: they are all Minimum Holders. Nice and Murasaki, as holders themselves, are drawn to the case—but what exactly is the link between Nice and the one who orchestrates it all?

 

Similarity – Both are very colorful animes
– both have MCs that took part in an experiment when they were children
– both give a similar feeling off
Main difference: Hamatora is about an agency that deals with supernatural powers, Kiznaiver revolves around wounds that connect people.

7. Charlotte

CharlotteSynopsis – Special abilities occur among a small percentage of boys and girls in puberty. Yū Otosaka uses his power without others knowing, and lives a fairly normal, average school life. Before him suddenly appears a girl, Nao Tomori. Due to his meeting with her, the fate of special power-users will be exposed. The student council of the school, led by Nao, is tasked with secretly tracking down adolescents who abuse their powers. Yuu is forced to join the student council and together, they face formidable challenges that bring him closer to the shocking truth that his own, seemingly incomplete ability, might be more powerful than he could have ever imagined.

Similarity – Charlotte and kiznaiver where both done by the same animation studio that has done big hits. Some characters really resemble each other as well, and it’s hard to know who to root for when there’s so many lovable people involved. Its kinda like an “if you watched Kill la kill, watch Kiznaiver!” or “if you watched Angel beats, watch Charlotte!”

6. Flip Flappers

Flip FlappersSynopsis – Dragged along by the energetic stranger, Cocona finds herself in the world of Pure Illusion—a bizarre alternate dimension—helping Papika look for crystal shards. Upon completing their mission, Papika and Cocona are sent to yet another world in Pure Illusion. As a dangerous creature besets them, the girls use their crystals to transform into magical girls: Cocona into Pure Blade, and Papika into Pure Barrier. But as they try to defeat the creature before them, three others with powers from a rival organization enter the fray and slay the creature, taking with them a fragment left behind from its body. Afterward, the girls realize that to stand a chance against their rivals and the creatures in Pure Illusion, they must learn to work together and synchronize their feelings in order to transform more effectively.

Similarity – Both have two main characters who remember they were in an experimental hospital thing when they were young and both start to remember old memories of the stuff done to them. Both have a romance between the characters that were friends when they were little and both are great adventrous shows with awesome endings.

5. Bakemonogatari

BakemonogatariSynopsis – Although there are still traces of the brief period he became a vampire, third-year high school student Koyomi Araragi is human again. He happens upon others with their own supernatural problems and finds that he can empathize. Koyomi becomes involved in their lives, seeking to help them and occasionally asking for advice from Meme Oshino, the homeless man who helped him become human again. Through several tales involving demons and gods, Bakemonogatari follows Araragi as he attempts to help those who suffer from supernatural maladies.

Similarity – Both explore the topic of human emotions and relationships in a darker setting.
– Visually distinct
– Great soundtrack.
– Centered around pain, love, friendships and hardships.

4. Mekakucity Actors

Mekakucity ActorsSynopsis – On the hot summer day of August 14, Shintarou Kisaragi is forced to leave his room for the first time in two years. While arguing with the cyber girl Ene who lives in his computer, Shintarou Kisaragi accidentally spills soda all over his keyboard. Though they try to find a replacement online, most stores are closed due to the Obon festival, leaving them with no other choice but to visit the local department store. Venturing outside makes Shintarou extremely anxious, but the thought of living without his computer is even worse. It’s just his luck that on the day he finally goes out, he’s caught in a terrifying hostage situation.

Similarity – Kiznaiver and Mekakucity Actors both have a group of teens that has something connecting them, and the groups end up working together because of it. The stories aren’t too similar but the overall feel you get from the show is very much the same, the urban city areas are almost identical to each other and the individuals in the groups are similar. The protagonists of both come off initially as quiet and weak, and the supporting cast are unique in colors and personality

3. ReLIFE

ReLIFESynopsis – Arata Kaizaki is an unemployed, single 27-year-old who has just been cut off from his parents’ financial support. Unable to find a job due to him leaving his previous employer within three months, he is stuck. One night after drinking with a high school friend, Arata meets Ryō Yoake, a man who offers Arata pills to turn him back into a 17-year old so he can redo his life. After agreeing to the experiment, Arata joins a high school class, and meets Chizuru Hishiro, a socially-awkward silent beauty who yearns to have friends. Through connecting with her and other classmates, Arata must find what he lacks to live a happy life in the real world within a one-year time limit.

Similarity – Both involve an experiment that is meant to bond people
-Both are about growing up and making difficult decisions
-Both have a traumatic mess up in which the main character was involved prior to the timeline of the show

2. Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso)

Shigatsu wa Kimi no UsoSynopsis – Music accompanies the path of the human metronome, the prodigious pianist Kousei Arima. But after the passing of his mother, Saki Arima, Kousei falls into a downward spiral, rendering him unable to hear the sound of his own piano. Two years later, Kousei still avoids the piano, leaving behind his admirers and rivals, and lives a colorless life alongside his friends Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryouta Watari. However, everything changes when he meets a beautiful violinist, Kaori Miyazono, who stirs up his world and sets him on a journey to face the music again.

Similarity – Both series have a romance/friendship centered story. Both protagonists have certain emotional or/and physical scars which prevent them from leading a normal high school life. They are both well writen, well directed, well animated masterpieces that certainly leave a mark when you are finished watching them.

1. Darling in the FranXX

Darling in the FranXXSynopsis – In the distant future, humanity has been driven to near-extinction by giant beasts known as Klaxosaurs, forcing the surviving humans to take refuge in massive fortress cities called Plantations. Children raised here are trained to pilot giant mechas known as FranXX—the only weapons known to be effective against the Klaxosaurs—in boy-girl pairs. Bred for the sole purpose of piloting these machines, these children know nothing of the outside world and are only able to prove their existence by defending their race.

Similarity – You get the same kind of vibes from the main characters. The art is similar, and most importantly the stories can relate heavily. In both anime, the characters in the show are around the same age, and being forced to partake in an experiment that will better society. If you like either one of these shows, do yourself a favor and check out the other one.
