Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)Synopsis – Academy City, Japan, is at the forefront of science. Besides being 30 years ahead of the world technologically, more than three-fourths of this peculiar city’s population consists of students developing their psychic abilities as espers in various institutions. Among these students is Touma Kamijou, a high school boy with the lowest psychic rank of zero, but with a mysterious power no scientist can understand: “Imagine Breaker,” which allows him to negate other supernatural abilities. He meets the strange Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young girl who has memorized the entire forbidden grimoires, and now a dangerous organization is hunting Index down. With several magicians looking to harm the girl, Kamijou will defend his new companion at all costs as he discovers a strange new realm of the supernatural.

Similarity – They both operate on the premise of being an action/drama, but have a lot of comedy moments thrown in (More in the case of Kore wa Zombie—). The main characters both end up with a harem, have some form of ability to absorb magic, and are both “average guys”. The first female characters introduced in each series also have incredible magic powers, but are unable to use them unless the situation is dire. They also have some parallels in appearance.

9. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu)

The Melancholy of Haruhi SuzumiyaSynopsis – On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having “no interest in ordinary humans”. She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behavior is Kyon who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. When Kyon comments about Haruhi’s joining every club in school and then quitting he unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after-school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves dragged, literally, into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi’s Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short).

Similarity – Both involve a male character being threatened (or even killed) on a first date. Thereafter, these characters begin cohabiting with magical individuals and saving the world. Both male characters gain magical powers. Kore wa Zombie Desu ka is much, MUCH funnier though.

8. Student Council’s Discretion (Seitokai no Ichizon)

Student Council's DiscretionSynopsis – Usually, the officers of Hekiyou Academy’s student council are elected by popular vote, but an additional position is granted to the student who scores the highest on the exams. Ken, who historically has had below average grades, worked hard to improve them to be accepted into the student council, with the ultimate goal of surrounding himself with girls who fawn over him. Unfortunately for the vice president, things do not go quite as planned. Not only do the ladies of the council continually rebuff his advances, they also prefer to focus on more important and “boring” activities, such as organizing school events and managing the other clubs. But a few minor hurdles like these won’t stop Ken from chasing after his dreams, even if they seem a bit ridiculous.

Similarity – Ken and Ayumu organically switch between the boke role and the tsukkomi role, depending on the situation or who they are interacting with. Similar comedy, characters, and harem. Both take place at school, but Kore Wa Zombie has more scenes out there and also supernatural things.

7. High School DxD

High School DxDSynopsis – High school student Issei Hyoudou is your run-of-the-mill pervert who does nothing productive with his life, peeping on women and dreaming of having his own harem one day. Things seem to be looking up for Issei when a beautiful girl asks him out on a date, although she turns out to be a fallen angel who brutally kills him! However, he gets a second chance at life when beautiful senior student Rias Gremory, who is a top-class devil, revives him as her servant, recruiting Issei into the ranks of the school’s Occult Research Club. Slowly adjusting to his new life, Issei must train and fight in order to survive in the violent world of angels and devils.

Similarity – Both protagonists were revived from the dead by one of the heroines. The protagonists are both perverts and have their own harem. The heroines are from another world. They both have great styles of art and music. They are both ecchi and a bit mature. However, HSDxD is more mature than KWZDK.

6. Baka & Test – Summon the Beasts (Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu)

Baka & Test - Summon the Beasts (Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu)Synopsis – The story centers around Akihisa Yoshii, the “baka” of the title. His academy rigidly divides up the student body into classes based on the results of tests. The prodigies are in the A class with reclining seats complete with air conditioning, but Akihisa is in F class, the lowest rung of the school ladder which is furnished only with low, decrepit tables and worn-out straw tatami mats. A girl named Mizuki Himeji is actually one of the smartest girls in Akihisa’s sophomore year, but she had a fever on test day and was pigeonholed into the F class. Besides Mizuki (who Akihisa secretly adores), the F class also has Yuuji Sakamoto, the class president who has been Akihisa’s friend and partner-in-crime since the freshman year.

Similarity – Neither of these shows take themselves seriously, They just take a concept and make fun of it in the most hilarious ways they can. along with very entertaining and unique fighting scenes, Both shows do a great job of parodying their genres, With just senseless and random comedy each show throws at you, they are also able to give you a decent narrative when they get serious, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu seems to do more fleshing out of the characters the Kore wa Zombie Desu ka but each have a fun storyline with many likeable characters.

5. Sankarea: Undying Love

Sankarea Undying LoveSynopsis – Ever since he was a child, zombie-obsessed Chihiro Furuya has wanted an undead girlfriend. Soon enough, his love for all things zombie comes in handy when his cat Baabu gets run over, prompting Chihiro to try to make a resurrection potion and bring him back to life. During his endeavor, he sees a rich girl named Rea Sanka yelling into an old well every day about her oppressive life. After meeting and bonding with her, Chihiro is convinced by Rea to persevere in saving Baabu. Eventually, he succeeds with the help of the poisonous hydrangea flowers from Rea’s family garden. Rea drinks the resurrection potion, mistakenly thinking she will die. Though it doesn’t kill her, the effects still linger and her death from a fatal accident causes her to be reborn as a zombie.

Similarity – Both series involve around romantic comedy and the whole undead theme. Both male protagonists seem to have an indifferent attitude towards life but seem to later change through chance encounters with other various characters. Both series contains light-hearted comedy and some fan-service to spice things up.

4. Invaders of the Rokujyoma!? (Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!?)

Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!?Synopsis – After Koutarou Satomi’s father is suddenly relocated for his job, the first-year high school student is faced with finding a cheap place to live by himself. Naturally, he jumps at the chance to move into Corona House’s Room 106 for a mere five thousand yen a month. The following night, Koutarou is visited by various seemingly mythical figures, all of whom claim ownership of the poor student’s apartment. Among the invaders is Sanae Higashihongan, a ghost supposedly haunting the room, magical girl Yurika, alien princess Theiamillis Gre Fortorthe, and Kiriha Kurano, a direct descendant of the Earth People. But more importantly, each of these four girls needs Koutarou’s apartment for her own reasons and won’t back down without a fight!

Similarity – Both shows have a main character and a variety of girls living under the same roof, but what makes the two even more similar is that they both have a lot of interesting characters. Although there are romantic thoughts in each show, each could easily stand without them. The characters are just fun to watch.

3. Date A Live

Date A Live

Synopsis – Thirty years before strange phenomena called a “spacequake” devastated the center of Eurasia, claiming the lives of at least 150 million people. Since then, smaller spacequakes plague the world on an irregular basis. Shidō Itsuka, a seemingly ordinary high schooler comes across a mysterious girl at the ground zero of a spacequake and learns from his sister Kotori she is one of the “Spirits” who are the real cause of the spacequakes that occur when they manifest themselves in the world. He also learns that Kotori is the captain of the airship Ratatoskr and recruits him to make use of his mysterious ability to seal the Spirits’ powers and stop them from being a threat to mankind. However, there is a catch: to seal a Spirit, he must make her fall in love with him.

Similarity – Both are harems in which the main protagonist has a special ability, and has to deal whit strong inhuman girls. Both have the same humor—a really stupid but damn funny humor! Both have these situations where you don’t know whether you should be laughing or crying; these situations happen even when the lowest trash gets the most awesome thing in the world! They are both extremely cheap but still extremely entertaining! So basically, these two series have exactly the same atmosphere and flair 😉

2. C³ – CubexCursedxCurious

C³ - CubexCursedxCuriousSynopsis – From the light novel series written by Minase Hazuki, comes a story of love, action, and comedy. Yachi Haruaki is a high school boy who is naturally resistant to curses. After his father sends him a mysterious black cube, Haruaki awakes to find a nude girl named Fear standing in his kitchen. She’s the human form of the cursed black cube – and an instrument of torture! Utilizing her special abilities, Fear fights alongside Haruaki to defeat other cursed instruments and their owners.

Similarity – A bunch of weird girls somehow linked to the supernatural flock to this one dude and they have zany adventures. Both anime are also very schizophrenic, and will frequently alternate between being comedy fanservice and utterly serious and violent, often within the same episode. The animation in both series seems dark most of the time but still heartwarming and fun at the same time.

1. Heaven’s Lost Property (Sora no Otoshimono)

Heaven's Lost Property (Sora no Otoshimono)Synopsis – Ever since he was a child, Tomoki Sakurai has always woke up with tears after a dream of an angel. His childhood friend Sohara Mitsuki worries about this and decides to seek the help of Eishirou Sugata, an eccentric sky maniac. He concludes that Tomoki’s dream is undoubtedly connected to what is known as the New World, a floating anomaly that scientists have failed to understand. Recruiting the New World Discovery Club’s first members, Eishirou schedules a time to meet up in order to observe the mystery in the sky. That day, Tomoki’s peaceful life is changed forever when a strange girl falls from the sky and begins to call him master.

Similarity – The similarity between these two are just the weird sense of humor and randomness they both radiate of. The setting is also the same: a guy comes across somehow magically/paranormally wrought women that change his life drastically. They’re both very entertaining to watch, especially the fact that they both actually HAVE a good storyline, which sometimes, is a bit interrupted or really strange. Also, the sequels of Sora no Otoshimono and Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?: Of The Dead, are all good continuations of the storyline
