10. Yuri!!! On ICE

Yuri!!! on Ice
Synopsis – Reeling from his crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Finale, Yuuri Katsuki, once Japan’s most promising figure skater, returns to his family home to assess his options for the future. At age 23, Yuuri’s window for success in skating is closing rapidly, and his love of pork cutlets and aptitude for gaining weight are not helping either.

However, Yuuri finds himself in the spotlight when a video of him performing a routine previously executed by five-time world champion, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly goes viral. In fact, Victor himself abruptly appears at Yuuri’s house and offers to be his mentor. As one of his biggest fans, Yuuri eagerly accepts, kicking off his journey to make it back onto the world stage. But the competition is fierce, as the rising star from Russia, Yuri Plisetsky, is relentlessly determined to defeat Yuuri and win back Victor’s tutelage.

Similarity –These are both Sports animes with cute characters for the mc that fight for their goals, even when they don’t believe in themselves. I know Yuri on Ice is pretty new, but when I saw it I was immediately reminded of haikyuu. The art style is pretty and bright and colorful and new for both of them. They are both boys sports animes. The main character is adorable

9. Prince of Stride: Alternative

Prince of Stride AlternativeSynopsis – “Stride”—an extreme sport that combines parkour, free running, relay, and sprinting—is what made first-year high school student Nana Sakurai enroll in Honan Academy, after being captivated by the school’s stride team. Sharing the mutual intention of joining the team is fellow first year and stride maniac, Takeru Fujiwara, and together they request to join. Much to their dismay, however, the stride club is no longer active due to lack of members, and they are now operating under the shogi club.

In order to revive the stride club, Nana and Takeru recruit first-year Riku Yagami—a fast runner who is interested in almost every sport. With this new team, the club now aims high at a new goal: to win the prestigious End of Summer competition, and bring the Honan stride team back to their prime.

Similarity – Both shows are about sports. Furthermore, they both share a similar premise, with the entire ensemble of main characters in both shows being in high school. Additionally, the characters in each show are both trying to prove themselves and their worth by participating and moving up the ranks in tournaments. Finally, many of the main characters share very similar personalities to each other. The main difference, obviously, is that Prince of Stride centers more on running, while Haikyuu!! is about volleyball.

8. Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma

Food Wars shokugeki no somaSynopsis- Ever since he was a child, fifteen-year-old Souma Yukihira has helped his father by working as the sous chef in the restaurant his father runs and owns. Throughout the years, Souma developed a passion for entertaining his customers with his creative, skilled, and daring culinary creations. His dream is to someday own his family’s restaurant as its head chef.

Yet when his father suddenly decides to close the restaurant to test his cooking abilities in restaurants around the world, he sends Souma to Tootsuki Culinary Academy, an elite cooking school where only 10 percent of the students graduate. The institution is famous for its “Shokugeki” or “food wars,” where students face off in intense, high-stakes cooking showdowns.

As Souma and his new schoolmates struggle to survive the extreme lifestyle of Tootsuki, more and greater challenges await him, putting his years of learning under his father to the test.

Similarity – Both of these stories follow a very energetic main character striving to become better at what they do (volleyball and cooking). These MC’s never give up no matter the cost. There are a large variety of different characters in each anime that help the mc. And, of course, there are rivals as well. The music and intensity of the matches (volleyball matches, shokugeki matches) are very similar, but Shokugeki no Souma has more comedy to it. All in all, these just look and feel very similar.

7. Days (TV)

Synopsis – The series is about two boys named Tsukushi and Jin. Tsukushi is a boy with no special talent or traits while Jin is considered a soccer genius. On one stormy night, Jin meets Tsukushi, and they get dragged into the world of soccer.

Similarity – Haikyuu and Days are similar in the fact that both the main protagonists just recently really started to play sports, more so for Days.
Both Hinata and Tsukushi are seen as “weak” in the beginning but show true potential to be great as the series goes on. Both Hinata and Tsukushi learn to make friends and what its like to be in a team. Both Hinata and Tsukushi don’t let anyone get them down; in fact, they use it as a motivation. (Hard workers!)Overall, if you like sports anime, then just give this a try.

6. All Out!!

Synopsis – In rugby, there is no ace striker, there is no number four batter, so who is the star of the team?

The story begins at school entrance ceremony of Kanagawa High School where Kenji Gion, a small but gutsy go-getter joins the rugby club. He joins with his classmate, Iwashimizu, who has a complicated past and sub-captain Hachiouji, who always takes good care of his Club members. Lastly, there is Captain Sekizan, who has overwhelming powers but keeps his cards close to his chest. With such differences in both personality and physical performance, the team must learn to work and grow together so they can become the best.

Similarity – The primary main characters for both Haikyuu (volleyball) and All Out (rugby) are short/small sized boys that are extremely enthusiastic about the game they are learning to play. Both are looked down for their size and want to show everyone that they are capable of standing face to face with the best, despite being short.

5. Welcome to the Ballroom

Ballroom e Youkoso (Welcome to the Ballroom)
Synopsis –A professional dancer named Sengoku rescues Tatara, an introverted third-year middle school student who is being harassed by delinquents. Tatara ends up at Sengoku’s dance studio where he meets Shizuku Hanaoka, a schoolmate he comes to secretly idolize. From this defining moment when Tatara enters the world of dance. Sengoku is a free-spirited, dynamic international dancer who recognizes Tatara’s potential and begins to coach him. Through dance, Tatara meets another schoolmate, a dance prodigy named Kiyoharu. Through these new friendships, Tatara develops a passionate desire to improve as a dancer and be accepted by his peers and rivals, which nurtures his own native talent. And through interaction with Tatara, other dance members are encouraged to take steps to overcome their own challenges and issues.

Similarity – Similar art and character design, same music composer. The main character starts out as a weak little thing, but he has a natural talent and once he knows that he wants to do something ( dance/play volleyball) he has a great passion and keeps practicing to become the very best. Apart from that – great story, very engaging, action, a little bit of drama, school life etc.

4. Yowamushi Pedal

Synopsis – Sakamichi Onoda is a cheerful otaku looking to join his new school’s anime club, eager to finally make some friends. Unfortunately, the club has been disbanded and he takes it upon himself to revive it by finding students who are willing to join. Without much luck, Onoda decides to make a round trip to Akihabara on his old, bulky city bicycle, a weekly 90-kilometer ride he has been completing since fourth grade.

This is when he meets fellow first-year student, Shunsuke Imaizumi, a determined cyclist who is using the school’s steep incline for practice. Surprised by Onoda’s ability to climb the hill with his specific type of bicycle, Imaizumi challenges him to a race, with the proposition of joining the anime club should Onoda win. And thus begins the young boy’s first foray into the world of high school bicycle racing!

Similarity – Different sports yet both series have high spirits when it comes to team play. The main male characters are part of a team in the perspective sport they are involved in. But with that also comes adversaries and obstacles they must overcome. Considering to be an underdog, both series highlights their growth. At the same time, other characters on their team also get insight on their roles in the story. I recommend both series for sports fan interested in teamwork and a competitive atmosphere.

3. Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club

Synopsis – Haruka Nanase has a love for water and a passion for swimming. In elementary school, he competed in and won a relay race with his three friends Rin Matsuoka, Nagisa Hazuki, and Makoto Tachibana. After claiming victory at the tournament, the four friends went their separate ways. Years later, they reunite as high school students; however, Rin couldn’t care less about returning to the way things used to be. Not only does he attend a different school, but the sole thing important to him is proving that he is a better swimmer than Haruka.

After the bitter reunion, Haruka, Nagisa, and Makoto decide to form the Iwatobi High School Swim Club, but they will need a fourth member if they hope to take part in the upcoming tournament. Enter Rei Ryuugazaki, a former member of the track team whom Nagisa recruits. As the time to compete draws near, the four develop a close bond while training intensely to come out on top and settle things between Haruka and Rin once and for all.

Similarity – slice-of-life and friendship storylines, they’re really relatable. I told my friend I was desperate to find another Anime just like it with the same ideas of coming together as a team and breaking down walls to salvage and build new friendships and she recommended Haikyuu!!

2. Ace of Diamond

Ace of Diamond (Diamond no Ace)Synopsis – Eijun Sawamura is a pitcher who joins an elite school with a brilliant catcher named Kazuya Miyuki. Together with the rest of the team, they strive for Japan’s storied Koushien championships through hard work and determination.

Similarity – both series delivers themselves with competitive teamwork and plays that focuses on development. The main characters has a passion for the sport that they are playing and works towards their goal to becoming stronger each episode. Their teammates helps them along the way while tackling through difficult obstacles. It is realistic as we see how much the characters grow through their development over the course. I recommend both series especially if you’re the type into sports with competitive team play.

1. Kuroko’s Basketball

Kuroko's Basketball (Kuroko no Basket)Synopsis – Tetsuya Kuroko is a former member from the legendary middle school basketball team known as “The Generation of Miracles”. Upon meeting Taiga Kagami he decides upon becoming his shadow to help him become Japan’s greatest basketball player.

Similarity – An unlikely duo trying to do their best in order to overcome their weaknesses and bring out the best in their teams. Both shows have a similar cast which share various humorous conversations. Either through hard work and practice or with talent, the characters are overcoming their obstacles one by one in order to achieve their dreams. That, of course, doesn’t mean there aren’t any bumps in the road. Haikyuu!! focuses more on the real aspects of sports, while Kuroko no Basket focuses on the suspenseful, which makes it seem over the top quite a few times.
