10. Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince

Synopsis – In the latter half of 21st century, humans leave the Earth and begin to live in space. In order to adapt to the environment in space and deal with the hostile aliens in Jupiter, genetically engineered children called “Princes” are artificially raised and trained to be pilots of armed robots “AHSMB (Advanced High Standard Multipurpose Battle Device). This is a story about one of the teenage “Princes,” Hitachi O Izuru, who studies in an academic city Grandzehle.

Similarity –Human race under the invasion of an alien race
– Humans are outnumbered by the alien
– human race fought back with alien technology
– MC power came from their fighting instinct
– MC have feeling toward alien princess

9. Aldnoah.Zero

Synopsis – The discovery of a hypergate on the Moon once allowed the human race to teleport to Mars. Those who chose to settle there unearthed a technology far more advanced than that of their home planet, which they named “Aldnoah.” This discovery led to the founding of the Vers Empire of Mars and a declaration of war against the “Terrans,” those who stayed behind on Earth. However, a battle on the moon—later called “Heaven’s Fall”—caused the hypergate to explode, destroying the moon and leading the two planets to establish an uneasy ceasefire.

Their peace was a fragile one, however. Fifteen years later, high school student Inaho Kaizuka witnesses the plotted assassination of the Vers Empire’s Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia, who had come to Earth in hopes of repairing the relationship between the empire and its homeland. The ceasefire is shattered, and the Martians declare war on the Terrans once again. In the face of this insurmountable enemy, Inaho and his friends must now fight against the Vers Empire to settle the war once and for all.

Similarity – both shows share a similar story. In Aldnoah the people from Mars are attacking earth and in Gurren Lagann humanity is fighting to get their planet back.
Both shows have a lot of action but the characters aren’t rely similar.

8. Heroic Age

Synopsis- When the Golden Race invited other races to join them in the stars, three sentient races answered their call. The Goldens called them the Bronze, Silver and Heroic Tribes. Just before the Gold Tribe left to travel to another Universe, a fourth race appeared, traveling to the stars on their own accomplishments. The Golds named the human race the Iron Tribe. During the passing of time, humanity suffers at the hands of the more dominant races and is now facing extinction. Following a prophecy left by the Gold Tribe, Princess Deianeira sets out to search for the powerful being who might be able to save humankind. She meets a wild haired boy on an abandoned planet—a fateful encounter that will not only change the fortunes of Humanity but also the fate of the universe.

Similarity – Both have great outer space action, although only the latter half of Gurren Lagann is based in space. The main characters originated from a seemingly barren planet, and need to fight aliens in order to protect the universe. Both main characters are overwhelmingly powerful when they are using their mecha.

7. Guilty Crown

Synopsis – Japan, 2039. Ten years after the outbreak of the “Apocalypse Virus,” an event solemnly regarded as “Lost Christmas,” the once proud nation has fallen under the rule of the GHQ, an independent military force dedicated to restoring order. Funeral Parlor, a guerilla group led by the infamous Gai Tsutsugami, act as freedom fighters, offering the only resistance to GHQ’s cruel despotism.

Inori Yuzuriha, a key member of Funeral Parlor, runs into the weak and unsociable Shuu Ouma during a crucial operation, which results in him obtaining the “Power of Kings”—an ability which allows the wielder to draw out the manifestations of an individual’s personality, or “voids.” Now an unwilling participant in the struggle against GHQ, Shuu must learn to control his newfound power if he is to help take back Japan once and for all.

Guilty Crown follows the action-packed story of a young high school student who is dragged into a war, possessing an ability that will help him uncover the secrets of the GHQ, Funeral Parlor, and Lost Christmas. However, he will soon learn that the truth comes at a far greater price than he could have ever imagined.

Similarity – While TTGL is much more focused on the actual mecha aspects whereas in Guilty Crown it’s just a periphery element, the storytelling has some similarities. Both main characters, Simon and Shu, go through a crazy amount of hardships and losses especially with those close to them. They each have a role model that they look up to and want to eventually become, and both characters go through a significant amount of character development, changing from weak-willed little boys to mature and respectable adults. There are many similarities too in terms of character relationships and plot events, but giving away any of that would lead to massive spoilers. Definitely, give both of these a shot.

6. Darling in the FranXX

Synopsis – In the distant future the land is ruined and humanity establishes the mobile fort city Plantation. Pilots produced inside Plantation live in Mistilteinn, also known as the “birdcage.” Children live there knowing nothing of the outside world or the freedom of the sky. Their lives consist of battling to carry out missions. Their enemies are mysterious giant lifeforms known as Kyōryū, and the children pilot robots called Franxx to face off against them. For the children, riding the Franxx proves their existence. A boy named Hiro is called Code:016, and he was once known as a prodigy. However, he has fallen behind, and his existence seems unnecessary. Not piloting a Franxx is the same as ceasing to exist. One day, a mysterious girl known as “Zero Two” appears before him. Two horns grow out of her head

Similarity – Similar art style (same artists as trigger is basically just gynax reborn). Giant robots, emotional characters, and a little fan service. Typical Trigger animation that I can’t recommend enough to anyone who likes Gurrenlagan. The anime really have the same feeling as Gurren and may even be its spiritual successor.

5. Gunbuster

Synopsis –Generations have passed since the war with the Space Monsters started, and none remain who know how it began, with even records of those times being scarce. It is a lost cause, but humanity still fights against them, relying on the “Topless”: a group of elite space pilots with special powers that allow them to use the Buster Machines—the last hope against the Space Monsters.

Nono, a girl from a remote Martian town, has heard tales all her life of the legendary pilot “Nono-Riri,” and wants nothing more than to leave her humble life behind and follow in the footsteps of her idol. Though she has no idea of the dangers that lie ahead, nothing will stop her from achieving her dream. While Nono is down on her luck, she chances upon the lonesome Topless pilot Lal’C Melk Mark and decides to stake her entire future on following Lal’C, no matter the cost.

Similarity – Gurren Lagann and Gunbuster were in essence tributes to the mecha genre as it progressed, blending classic over-the-top courage and passion with modern, realistic characters. If you liked either Diebuster or Gurren Lagann, you’ll want the see the successor/predecessor for a lot of the same intense action, epic moments, and great characters.

4. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Synopsis – At the age of 14 Shinji Ikari is summoned by his father to the city of Neo Tokyo-3 after several years of separation. There he unwillingly accepts the task of becoming the pilot of a giant robot by the name EVA01 and protects the world from the enigmatic invaders known as “angels.” Even though he repeatedly questions why he has accepted this mission from his estranged and cold father, his doing so helps him to gradually accept himself. However, why exactly are the angels attacking and what are his father’s true intentions are yet to be unraveled.

Similarity –They’re both mecha series from Gainax, and that’s where the similarities end, but that’s really the point. Evangelion is a deconstruction of mecha anime, basically saying, “You know how all those other mecha series made piloting a giant robot look fun? Well, I’ll show you how miserable it can really be.” Gurren Lagann is a reconstruction; a decade later, saying, “You know how those mecha deconstruction series made piloting a giant robot looks really awful? Well, I’ll show you how AWESOME it can really be!” The persistent despair of the former and unshakable optimism of the latter make excellent counterpoints and contrast beautifully.

3. Eureka Seven

Synopsis – In the backwater town of Bellforest lives a 14-year-old boy named Renton Thurston. He desires to leave his home behind and join the mercenary group known as Gekkostate, hoping to find some adventure to brighten up his mundane life. However, stuck between his grandfather’s insistence to become a mechanic like him and the pressure of his deceased father’s legacy, the only excitement Renton finds is in his pastime of riding the Trapar wave particles that are dispersed throughout the air, an activity akin to surfing.

Everything changes when an unknown object crashes through Renton’s garage discovered to be a Light Finding Operation—a robot capable of riding the Trapar waves—specifically known as the Nirvash typeZERO. Its pilot is a young girl named Eureka, a member of the Gekkostate, who requests a tune-up for the Nirvash. Their meeting sparks the beginning of Renton’s involvement with the Gekkostate as he takes off alongside Eureka as the co-pilot of the Nirvash.

Similarity – Both Tengen Toppen Gurren Laggann and Eureka 7 revolve around small, young male leads coming of age in a world they don’t quite feel comfortable with. With the help of their friends, and respective similarly aged love interests, both Simon and Renton find the motivation to better themselves and grow into strong young men. These shows both balance comedy with drama, all the while displaying heavy mecha themes.

2. FLCL

Synopsis – Naota Nandaba is an ordinary sixth grader living in a city where nothing amazing ever seems to happen. After his brother Tasuku leaves town to play baseball in America, Naota takes it upon himself to look after everything Tasuku left behind—from his top bunk bed to his ex-girlfriend Mamimi Samejima, who hasn’t stopped clinging to Naota since Tasuku left.

Little does Naota know, however, that his mundane existence is on the verge of being changed forever: enter Haruko Haruhara, a Vespa-riding, bass guitar-wielding, pink-haired psychopath whose first encounter with Naota leaves him with tire tracks on his back and a giant horn on his head. Though all he wants is some peace and quiet, when Haruko takes up residence at his parents’ home, Naota finds himself dragged into the heart of the greatest battle for supremacy that Earth—and quite possibly the entire universe—has ever seen.

Similarity – FLCL, and Lagann are Gainax’s own flesh and blood, meaning that they contain incredible action with madness everywhere. Although for Lagann this is mostly true for first episodes, that’s enough. Furthermore, both series showcase robots. In FLCL they come out of the hero’s head, in Lagann they’re head-shaped themselves.

1. Kill la Kill

Kill la KillSynopsis – Ryuuko Matoi carries a large weapon shaped like half of a pair of scissors. She’s looking for the woman with the other half, who killed her father. Satsuki Kiryuuin, student council president of Honnouji Academy, is said to know the woman’s identity, so Ryuuko transfers there. Those who arrive at the school receive a special “goku uniform”, and Satsuki has used that power to rule the school in fear.

Similarity – The similarities are astounding. The plot building, the characters, the animation, the universe, the humor, the simplicity in which things are explained to its barest minimum, the superpowers, and the philosophy so say some.
Lastly and to no ones surprise, the two shows are by the same creators.
