10. Beautiful Bones -Sakurako’s Investigation

Beautiful Bones -Sakurako's InvestigationSynopsis – When Shoutarou Tatewaki first meets Sakurako Kujou, he knows his life will never be the same. Initially believing her to be responsible for a disappearance in the neighborhood, he later learns of her true talent: analyzing bone specimens. Sakurako has quite the collection of reconstructed animal bones, but she wishes she had more of the human variety, much to the chagrin of those around her. Soon, Shoutarou begins accompanying the eccentric osteologist on the many different unsolved cases she comes across—usually in the form of decomposing bodies. But with so many incidents happening around them, could there be a larger mystery at work in their lives?

Similarity – Both are mystery anime and have a very similar atmosphere. The main protagonists, a female genius, and a soft-hearted but brave supporting male student solve mysterious cases. Though every episode greets us with yet another mystery there is a clear secret around the main character Sakurako, as we had it in Gosick with little Victorique. The main female protagonists act very similar; sometimes they are very honest and concentrated on the case, other times they act childish, especially while having an argument with the male protagonist.

9. The Familiar of Zero (Zero no Tsukaima)

Zero no Tsukaima (The Familiar of Zero)Synopsis – When the first year students are required to perform a summoning ritual, Louise’s summoning results in a catastrophic explosion! Everyone deems this to be yet another failure, but when the smoke clears, a boy named Saito Hiraga appears. Now Louise’s familiar, Saito is treated as a slave, forced to clean her clothes and eat off the ground. But when an unfamiliar brand is found etched on Saito’s hand from the summoning ritual, it is believed to be the mark of a powerful familiar named Gandalfr. Wild, adventurous, and explosive, Zero no Tsukaima follows Saito as he comes to terms with his new life and as Louise proves that there is more to her than her nickname suggests.

Similarity – They both contain a male protagonist who is in love with the girl and helps her out with her journey. Both contain hilarious comedy and are incredibly funny. Both of the female protagonists are unsure about the guy at first. I can’t quite fit the similarities in this paragraph without it being a page long. If you liked one, I guarantee you’ll love the other.

8. Dance in the Vampire Bund

Dance in the Vampire BundDance in the Vampire BundSynopsis – Akira Kaburagi does not believe in vampires and gets uneasy whenever they are brought up, although he has yet to realize why. Apart from suffering a head injury a year ago, he lives on blissfully until he meets Mina. She triggers within him memories of a life he had long forgotten, and he soon begins protecting her without understanding why. But Akira’s secret is far stranger than he could have ever thought possible—he discovers that he is a werewolf, sworn from birth to protect the vampire queen, even if it costs him his life. Now, as this two dance a rondo of death in the Vampire Bund, Mina and Akira find out just how deep their bond goes.

Similarity – Both feature a blonde female lead character who is initially arrogant towards the male protagonist but also are trapped physically and mentally by conditions set upon them (Victorique with her father and Mina with the three clans). The male protagonists end up being the ones the female leads to cherish. On a side note, Mina and Victorique are voiced by the same seiyuu.

7. Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji)

Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)Synopsis – In Ciel’s past lies a secret tragedy that enveloped him in perennial darkness—during one of his bleakest moments, he formed a contract with Sebastian, a demon, bargaining his soul in exchange for vengeance upon those who wronged him. Today, not only is Sebastian one hell of a butler, but he is also the perfect servant to carry out his master’s orders—all the while anticipating the delicious meal he will eventually make of Ciel’s soul. As the two work to unravel the mystery behind Ciel’s chain of misfortunes, a bond forms between them that neither heaven nor hell can tear apart.

Similarity – Kuroshitsuji is set in the Victorian Era and Gosick is set between WWI and WWII, with a few similarities in plots such as a “war that will involve the whole world”. Gosick starts off with Victorica solving mysteries and then getting into main plot. Kuroshitsuji is much the same, with Ciel completing various missions for the queen at the start. These two are also used as models or dolls; Victorica as a gothic loli, and Ciel dressed in adorable costumes.

6. Toradora!

toradoraSynopsis – Despite Ryuji Takasu’s gentle personality, his eyes make him look like an intimidating delinquent. Class rearrangements on his second high school year put him together with his best friend, Yusaku Kitamura, and his hidden crush, Minori Kushieda. Along with these two comes Kushieda’s best friend, Taiga Aisaka. Her delicate appearance contrasts with her brutal personality. Secretly in love with Kitamura, Taiga agrees to help Ryuji with his love interest as long as he helps her get closer to hers.

Similarity – Even though Toradora is more Slice of Life whereas Gosick is Mystery, the main characters are really similar: there’s a main guy whom eveybody thinks is scary because of his appearance when in reality he’s kind-hearted and soft, and a main girl who’s tiny but rude and treats the main guy like her servant. The main girl has problems with her father in both anime (though the situations are very different).

5. Pandora Hearts

Pandora HeartsSynopsis – Based on the supernatural fantasy manga of the same name, Pandora Hearts tells the story of fifteen-year-old Oz’s journey to discover the meaning behind the strange events that have overtaken his life. Assisted by a mysterious Chain named Alice, whose nickname is “Bloodstained Black Rabbit,” and members of a clandestine organization known as “Pandora,” Oz begins to realize his existence may have more meaning than he could have ever imagined.

Similarity – These are Gothic tales dealing with the tale of a rabbit that brings fear into the minds of the people said rabbit comes across. The time eras are similar too and there is the mystery element.

4. The Mystic Archives of Dantalian (Dantalian no Shoka)

The Mystic Archives of DantalianSynopsis –Six months ago, Lord Hugh Anthony Disward, also known as Huey, lost his eccentric grandfather, Sir Wesley Disward, who was a renowned collector of rare books. His grandfather’s will states that, in order to inherit his manor and everything inside it, he must take guardianship over the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian—an archive that contains forbidden knowledge—and also take care of a mysterious girl called Dalian. As Huey settles into the manor, an old rival of his grandfather’s arranges a meeting with him. Dalian, knowing the rival to be Wesley’s killer, tags along and discovers that the murderer is in possession of a Phantom Book—a cursed tome that Wesley tried to seal away. When the book puts the two in danger, Huey discovers that the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian and Dalian are one and the same, and she entrusts Huey with the key to unlocking the knowledge stored within her.

Similarity – They are both set in a historical era with the them full of mystery and a bit gothic. Dalian pretty much reminds me of Victorique, who uses a sense of authority to hide her actual feelings. Both of them also deal with mysteries paired with historical events. Overall, both of them are mind boggling and worth the time.

3. Heaven’s Memo Pad (Kamisama no Memochou)

Kamisama no Memochou (Heaven's Memo Pad)Synopsis – Narumi Fujishima isn’t your typical high school student. He’s never really fit in and has become increasingly more isolated from his fellow classmates. But he’s not alone, and when Ayaka, the sole member of the Gardening Club, introduces him to the reclusive girl who lives above the ramen shop, Narumi enters a whole new secret world. Alice is a NEET, someone who is Not Employed, being Educated or in Training, but as Narumi quickly discovers, that doesn’t mean that she does nothing all day. In between tending to her small army of stuffed bears, Alice is an expert hacker and a very exclusive private detective.

Similarity – Both of this Anime feature reclusive girls who happen to solve the mysteries around them by gathering the “knowledge” around them and simulating the fragments so that they will eventually come too. Gosick is set between the two World Wars and Kamisama no Memochou is in a modern setting. While the girl in Gosick is actually older then a young girl, both girls have qwirks, one for sweets, the other for stuffed animals. Each one is also very moody and can be disagreeable when they don’t get their ways.

2. UN-GO

UN-GOSynopsis – In a dystopian future, detective Shinjuurou Yuuki—known by some as the “Defeated Detective”—solves mysteries throughout Tokyo. Aided by his odd associate Inga, Shinjuurou’s insight and ingenuity in cracking cases, particularly homicides, lead to numerous mysteries solved and culprits caught. However, his partner seems to have some other, more sinister intentions for the people they catch, and the truth of the assistant’s identity and motivation is shrouded in secrecy.

Similarity – I feel Gosick and Un-go have a similar feel to each other in the setting because when it first starts out it make’s you kinda restless with the mysteries and the main characters in which here the “main” one’s are Victorique and Kujo and Inga and Shinjuro. These characters referring to Victorique and Inga both have a weird aura or vibe and the stories are quite interesting there both mysteries and worth the while it just gives you this nice feel that makes you keep watching.

1. Hyouka

HyoukaSynopsis – Energy-conservative high school student Houtarou Oreki ends up with more than he bargained for when he signs up for the Classics Club at his sister’s behest—especially when he realizes how deep-rooted the club’s history really is. Begrudgingly, Oreki is dragged into an investigation concerning the 45-year-old mystery that surrounds the club room. Accompanied by his fellow club members, the knowledgeable Satoshi Fukube, the stern but benign Mayaka Ibara, and the ever-curious Eru Chitanda, Oreki must combat deadlines and lack of information with resourcefulness and hidden talent, in order to not only find the truth buried beneath the dust of works created years before them, but of other small side cases as well.

Similarity – Both anime have the central plot to solve riddles. Hyouka takes place at school environment and Gosick between the First and Second World Wars. Gosick has more drama and romance, while Hyouka shows you more comedy and slice-of-life (and even more) aspects. Gosick has a more elaborate plot, but Hyouka has arcs, so it’s easier to watch without getting bored.
