10. Darker than Black

Darker than Black Kuro no KeiyakushaSynopsis – In the Japanese city surrounding Hell’s Gate, Section 4 Chief Misaki Kirihara finds herself at odds with an infamous Contractor codenamed Hei. Called “Black Reaper” in the underground world, Hei, like his associates, undertakes missions for the mysterious and ruthless Syndicate while slowly peeling back the dark layers covering a nefarious plot that threatens the very existence of Contractors. From the mind of Tensai Okamura comes a sci-fi thriller taking the form of a subtle exposé on a war in which political positions and justice have no sway—a war waged exclusively in the shadows.

Similarity – An atmosphere of darkness and mystery flushes both of these series. The main character in Ergo Proxy and Darker Than Black live a double life, they have masks which hide their true faces. But not only similar characters put these titles together. The worlds described in DTB and Ergo Proxy are results of great catastrophes, connected with the main characters’ destinies.

9. Monster

MonsterSynopsis – Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, had it all: incredible skill at his work, a rich and beautiful fiancee, and a promising career at his hospital. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result he lost the support of the hospital director, as well as his position in the hospital and his fiance. A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and once again he was catapulted back onto the top. But as the chief suspect of the murders, Tenma did not get a easy life. Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.

Similarity – Similarities-
~The main characters both retain the same sense of hopelessness
~Both main charters are booted from their ‘sense of reality’ and lose their position in society
~Both characters leave home in order to chase after the main antagonist
~Touch on romance but both main characters experience as failed relationships as they are both abandoned in a way due to their position in society and or loss of notoriety

8. No.6

No.6Synopsis – Many years ago, after the end of a bloody world war, mankind took shelter in six city-states that were peaceful and perfect… at least on the surface. However, Shion—an elite resident of the city-state No. 6—gained a new perspective on the world he lives in, thanks to a chance encounter with a mysterious boy, Nezumi. Nezumi turned out to be just one of many who lived in the desolate wasteland beyond the walls of the supposed utopia. But despite knowing that the other boy was a fugitive, Shion decided to take him in for the night and protect him, which resulted in drastic consequences: because of his actions, Shion and his mother lost their status as elites and were relocated elsewhere, and the darker side of the city began to make itself known.

Similarity – I agree with other users- No. 6 and Ergo Proxy are both about utopian societies, and while No.6 is more hopeful and light, Ergo Proxy is great in its darker themes. Both have less explanations than other animes, but makes them all the more interesting to watch in suspense. Nevertheless, there are many and varied ways to present the theme. These two anime are quite different takes on a very similar topic.

7. Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy BebopSynopsis – In the year 2071, humanity has colonized several of the planets and moons of the solar system leaving the now uninhabitable surface of planet Earth behind. The Inter Solar System Police attempts to keep peace in the galaxy, aided in part by outlaw bounty hunters, referred to as “Cowboys.” The ragtag team aboard the spaceship Bebop are two such individuals. Mellow and carefree Spike Spiegel is balanced by his boisterous, pragmatic partner Jet Black as the pair makes a living chasing bounties and collecting rewards. Thrown off course by the addition of new members that they meet in their travels—Ein, a genetically engineered, highly intelligent Welsh Corgi; femme fatale Faye Valentine, an enigmatic trickster with memory loss; and the strange computer whiz kid Edward Wong—the crew embarks on thrilling adventures that unravel each member’s dark and mysterious past little by little.

Similarity – If you liked Ergo Proxy, you’ll definitely love Cowboy Bebop. Like Ergo Proxy, Cowboy Bebop combines almost every genre out there, including humor and action mixed with some drama and mystery. The characters are tough, and the only character that even gets close to being annoying is Ed, and even she can be hilarious sometimes.

6. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis EvangelionSynopsis – In the year 2015, the world stands on the brink of destruction. Humanity’s last hope lies in the hands of Nerv, a special agency under the United Nations, and their Evangelions, giant machines capable of defeating the Angels who herald Earth’s ruin. Gendou Ikari, head of the organization, seeks compatible pilots who can synchronize with the Evangelions and realize their true potential. Aiding in this defensive endeavor are talented personnel Misato Katsuragi, Head of Tactical Operations, and Ritsuko Akagi, Chief Scientist.

Similarity – Both have a post-apocalyptic feel, And the struggle for humanity to survive given the circumstances. In Neon Genesis their are ‘Angels’ which force humanity to fight, Whereas in Ergo Proxy there are “Proxies’ which are very mysterious much like that of the Angels. Overall both of them are very mind-bending as a series, you also see the protagonists go through psychological fights regarding their past, present, and future.

5. Serial Experiments Lain

Serial Experiments LainSynopsis – Lain Iwakura, an awkward and introverted fourteen-year-old, is one of the many girls from her school to receive a disturbing email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda—the very same Chisa who recently committed suicide. Lain has neither the desire nor the experience to handle even basic technology; yet, when the technophobe opens the email, it leads her straight into the Wired, a virtual world of communication networks similar to what we know as the internet. Lain’s life is turned upside down as she begins to encounter cryptic mysteries one after another. Strange men called the Men in Black begin to appear wherever she goes, asking her questions and somehow knowing more about her than even she herself knows. With the boundaries between reality and cyberspace rapidly blurring, Lain is plunged into more surreal and bizarre events where identity, consciousness, and perception are concepts that take on new meanings.

Similarity – Lain and Ergo Proxy are insistent in their constant interrogations. They are both intelligent series that demand more than one viewing, Lain is considerably more risqué in that it twists narrative conventions to the point they no longer apply while Ergo Proxy channels its intellectuality via the plot itself, even if it lags a bit at the end.

4. Kurozuka

KurozukaSynopsis – The original novel is about a 12th-century man named Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Kurou). Kurou flees into the mountains after losing to his brother Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first Shogun to rule all of Japan. History records that he committed suicide, but instead, Kurou meets a strange, beautiful woman named Kuromitsu in her mountain hermitage. Eventually, Kurou falls in love with Kuromitsu, but then realizes she conceals a dark secret. He learns that he is unable to die and continues to live for a thousand years as Japan evolves into a future society.

Similarity – The futuristic atmosphere –aspects- within both shows and the dark feeling surrounding the worlds of them that makes this anime display some resemblances. The sensation of solitude in both of these shows, or the deepness, and the meaningfulness behind not just each episode but each part of the script. Both shows are interesting, mature and complex.

3. Texhnolyze

TexhnolyzeSynopsis – Texhnolyze takes place in the city of Lux, a man-made underground city that has crumbled after years of neglect and lack of repairs. Citizens of Lux have come to refer to their home as simply “The City” and treat it as though it has a mind and will of its own. Three major factions battle to control Lux: Organo, a group of “professionals” who collaborate with the criminal underworld that controls Texhnolyze (prosthetics), the Salvation Union, a populist group that seeks to disrupt Organo’s business, and Racan, a collection of young individuals with Texhnolyzes that use their abilities for personal gain.

Similarity – The color palette and art style are similar, particularly the use of muted almost washed-out colors with strong dark overtones. Both are set in a near-future timeline with a post-apocalyptic twist. The difference is that where Ergo Proxy has a strong, linear plot line, Texhnolyze’s plot is somewhat disjointed and very far from being direct. For those that love a story you have to watch a couple times before understanding what it’s trying to get at, Texhnolyze is an obscure must.

2. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Ghost in the ShellSynopsis – In the not so distant future, mankind has advanced to a state where complete body transplants from flesh to machine is possible. This allows for great increases in both physical and cybernetic prowess and blurring the lines between the two worlds. However, criminals can also make full use of such technology, leading to new and sometimes, very dangerous crimes. In response to such innovative new methods, the Japanese Government has established Section 9, an independently operating police unit which deals with such highly sensitive crimes.

Similarity – They are both futuristic sci-fi series featuring philosophical aspects. Ergo Proxy is a bit slower-moving, with greater emphasis on charater development, whereas GitS is somewhat more episodic and more plot-focused, but both are excellent choices for a sci-fi anime fan.

1. Psycho-Pass

Psycho PassSynopsis – In the 22nd century, Japan enforces the Sibyl System, an objective means of determining the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for signs of criminal intent, known as their Psycho-Pass. Into this world steps Akane Tsunemori, a young woman with an honest desire to uphold justice. However, as she works alongside veteran Enforcer Shinya Kougami, she soon learns that the Sibyl System’s judgments are not as perfect as her fellow Inspectors assume. With everything she has known turned on its head, Akane wrestles with the question of what justice truly is, and whether it can be upheld through the use of a system that may already be corrupt.

Similarity – When I was watching Ergo Proxy I found this anime with a very grim environment, which I liked a lot. And now I’m watching Psycho-Pass with the almost the same feeling of the situation. So, according to this, the perception of these 2 anime is hard and complicated. Also what is most important is that Ergo Proxy and Psycho-Pass are present in the future and stories tell us about how “afterworld” effect on our characters and what happens with people’s initiative, that can be the main highlight of these anime by genre – SCI-FI. In addition, both anime are full of action and involving descriptions what makes both of them surprisingly interesting.
