10. Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)

Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)Synopsis – Academy City, Japan, is at the forefront of science. Besides being 30 years ahead of the world technologically, more than three-fourths of this particular city’s population consists of students developing their psychic abilities as espers in various institutions. Among these students is Touma Kamijou, a high school boy with the lowest psychic rank of zero, but with a mysterious power, no scientist can understand: “Imagine Breaker,” which allows him to negate other supernatural abilities.

This, however, doesn’t affect Kamijou’s life in the least as he plays his role as a regular teenager; that is until he meets the strange Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young girl who has memorized the entire forbidden grimoires, and now a dangerous organization is hunting Index down. With several magicians looking to harm the girl, Kamijou will defend his new companion at all costs as he discovers a strange new realm of the supernatural.

Similarity –Both anime show us story about big city life. There are few organizations fighting with each other and on the other side, we can see daily routine of quite untypical teenagers. Both series have a large number of heroes. Each of them has its own personality, individual traits, habits, and vices. Their fate is often intertwined with each other, complicating the whole story-line. The consummate sociologist will definitely find himself in both stories. However, the plot in Durarara!! is conducted in the more mature way.

9. Gatchaman Crowds

Gatchaman CrowdsSynopsis – Hajime Ichinose’s ordinary life is in for a change when a transcendent being named J.J Robinson hands her a small book called NOTE—a device which transforms her into one of the Gatchaman, the legendary protectors of Tachikawa City. Stressing that the existence of their group must remain a secret, fellow Gatchaman Sugane Tachibana takes Hajime to their base of operations, where Paiman, the panda-like alien leader of the Gatchaman, reveals their purpose: to eliminate aliens that pose a danger to humanity. These existential threats, called MESS, are becoming increasingly dangerous, destroying everything they touch. Now it’s up to the Gatchaman and their new recruit to stop them before the world is engulfed in chaos.

Similarity – The characters are using a similar app to GALAX – through their mobile phones the people of Tokyo gain information, carry out rescue missions, etc. and stay in contact: The Dollars are a group of normal people, trying to make the world a better place.

8. Bakemonogatari

BakemonogatariSynopsis – Although there are still traces of the brief period he became a vampire, third-year high school student Koyomi Araragi is human again. He happens upon others with their own supernatural problems and finds that he can empathize. Koyomi becomes involved in their lives, seeking to help them and occasionally asking for advice from Meme Oshino, the homeless man who helped him become human again.

Similarity – Both shows are visually stunning, filled with interesting characters and fresh. Their plots are also both strange; however, Bakemonogatari’s is more episodic, whereas Durarara!!’s started off episodic and comes together about halfway through.

7. Occultic;Nine

OcculticNineSynopsis – A blog disproving the supernatural, co-run by NEET teenager Yuuta Gamon and his enthusiastic best friend Ryouka Narusawa, becomes the catalyst that would bring together a group of people who supposedly have nothing to do with each other.

These individuals include high school fortune teller Miyuu Aikawa, who joins Yuuta to work on the blog; realist Sarai Hashigami, who is stunned when tragedy strikes his family; doujin artist Ririka Nishizono, who has an uncanny ability to predict the future with her art; black magic practitioner and local curse expert Aria Kurenaino and her ghostly friend; Shun Moritsuka, a seemingly childish otaku detective; and reporter Touko Sumikaze.

As this unlikely group, bound only by the strings of fate, find their way to each other, they are confronted with murder and other events that are shrouded by the presence of the supernatural. They must band together to solve the mysteries interlacing the city and their lives.

Similarity – These shows have quite an eccentric cast where all of the characters are distinct, both in appearance and personality. Characters are connected by supernatural events and there is always a mystery in these shows. Social media plays a somewhat large role in both shows.

6. Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

Darker than Black Kuro no Keiyakusha
Synopsis – In Tokyo, an impenetrable field is known as “Hell’s Gate” appeared ten years ago. At the same time, psychics who wield paranormal powers at the cost of their conscience also emerged. Hei is one of the most powerful of these psychic agents, and along with his blind associate, Yin, works for one of the many rival agencies vying to unlock the mysteries of Hell’s Gate.

Similarity – Both Anime’s are extremely dark, both have powerful plots that are hard to recognize at first. Like “Durarara!!” “Darker than Black” has a very scattered plot at first and the later episodes tie it all together, making even things that seemed to be fillers tie directly into the plot.

5. Bungou Stray Dogs

Bungou Stray Dogs
Synopsis – Guild has entered Yokohoma city. Along with the city, they want Atsushi of The Armed Detective Agency too. As Port Mafia want the city for themselves, a three-way war seems unavoidable. While fighting, Atsushi & Akutagawa find help in strange places. And in the background, Dazai continues his endless scheming.

Similarity – Both have groups or clans, with similar clan dynamics.
– The story is told from the point of view of an inexperienced character.
– The main character is new in the city and joins an organization.
– Comedy and action are balanced similarly.
– Both play with the supernatural.
– The soundtrack is very similar.

4. Baccano!

baccanoSynopsis – Each of the stories in the series involves several unrelated plots intersecting and crossing each other as events spiral farther and farther out of control. Immortal alchemists, mafia operated speakeasies, and many other elements of pulp fiction mashed together for a world straight out of the movies.

Similarity – Both shows are adapted from novels that are by the same author, Narita Ryohgo. Not to mention that the same animation studio and team worked on both adaptations. I’m almost certain that if you enjoyed Baccano for the obvious reasons, then you’ll love this.

3. K

k tv
Synopsis – Yashiro Isana has lived a relatively ordinary, simple life. He lives in the technologically advanced Shizume City and attends Ashinaka High School, a notable high school that is located on an island just outside the areas. Yashiro is friendly with everyone. Nothing seems wrong about him, except perhaps his habit of forgetting where his school-issued PDA is.
However, nothing normal has been happening since the recent murder of Tatara Totsuka, a prominent member of the infamous HOMRA. No one knows who exactly killed him but the man responsible bears an uncanny, identical appearance to Yashiro. Seeking vengeance, the Red Clansmen of HOMRA set out to get Yashiro and kill him. Everyone suspects that Yashiro is the murderer.

Similarity – Both series have what appears to be a somewhat naive, ‘head in the clouds’ main character, though both have a hidden side and secrets to be revealed.
The series also has a similar… Atmosphere to them, I guess you’d say. There is just something about both of them. Sends pleasant shivers down your spine.
They also have a variety of viewpoints, both switching from time to time to focus on different characters and aspects of one huge puzzle; though Durarara is more complex than K, with a broader cast of characters as well.

2. Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront)

Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront)Synopsis – Supersonic monkeys, vampires, talking fishmen, and all sorts of different supernatural monsters living alongside humans—this has been part of daily life in Hellsalem’s Lot, formerly known as New York City, for some time now. When a gateway between Earth and the Beyond opened three years ago, New Yorkers and creatures from the other dimension alike were trapped in an impenetrable bubble and were forced to live together. Libra is a secret organization composed of eccentrics and superhumans, tasked with keeping order in the city and making sure that chaos doesn’t spread to the rest of the world.

Similarity – Both are set in cities where much more is going on than an average citizen is aware of. The focus is not on a single MC but on a cast of unusual and cool characters. We see pretty ordinary protagonists(?) shoved in insane action and watch them learn and grow. Violence is treated nonchalantly, often to comedic effect. The storytelling is also similar, with an episodic feel but getting to a plot underneath.

1. Kamisama no Memochou (Heaven’s Memo Pad)

Kamisama no Memochou (Heaven's Memo Pad)Synopsis – Narumi Fujishima isn’t your typical high school student. He’s never really fit in and has become increasingly more isolated from his fellow classmates. But he’s not alone, and when Ayaka, the sole member of the Gardening Club, introduces him to the reclusive girl who lives above the ramen shop, Narumi enters a whole new secret world. Alice is a NEET, someone who is Not Employed, being Educated or in Training, but as Narumi quickly discovers, that doesn’t mean that she does nothing all day.

In between tending to her small army of stuffed bears, Alice is an expert hacker and a very exclusive private detective. To his surprise, Narumi finds himself drafted as one of the strange-but-elite team of associates that Alice has assembled from her NEET acquaintances. Together they’ll battle gangs, thieves, murderers, and drug lords. And in the middle of it all, Narumi will find his life changing forever!

Similarity – Both of these Anime are done in similar styles as each other and they start off being told from the same perspective, the point of view of the male character. There is a mystery element to both and the characters in both series have their own qwirks.
