10. Fist of the North Star

Synopsis – In the year 19XX, after being betrayed and left for dead, brave-hearted warrior Kenshirou wanders a post-apocalyptic wasteland on a quest to track down his rival, Shin, who has kidnapped his beloved fiancée Yuria. During his journey, Kenshirou makes use of his deadly fighting form, Hokuto Shinken, to defend the helpless from bloodthirsty Ravagers. It isn’t long before his exploits begin to attract the attention of greater enemies, like warlords and rival martial artists, and Keshirou finds himself involved with more than he originally bargained for.

Faced with ever-increasing odds, the successor of Hokuto Shinken is forced to put his skills to the test in an effort to take back what he cares for most. And as these new challenges present themselves and the battle against injustice intensifies, namely his conflict with Shin and the rest of the Nanto Seiken school of martial arts, Kenshirou is gradually transformed into the savior of an irradiated and violent world.

Similarity –One of the most influential shonen of all time, and perhaps one of Toriyama’s inspirations for the type of drama found in the Cell saga? Both have exciting martial arts battles. Both had bad initial dubs.

9. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

Synopsis – Years after an ancient evil was salvaged from the depths of the sea, Joutarou Kuujou sits peacefully within a Japanese jail cell. He’s committed no crime yet demands he not be released, believing he’s been possessed by an evil spirit capable of harming those around him. Concerned for her son, Holly Kuujou asks her father, Joseph Joestar, to convince Joutarou to leave the prison. Joseph informs his grandson that the “evil spirit” is in fact something called a “Stand,” the physical manifestation of one’s fighting spirit which can adopt a variety of deadly forms. After a fiery brawl with Joseph’s friend Mohammed Avdol, Joutarou is forced out of his cell and begins learning how to control the power of his Stand.

However, when a Stand awakens within Holly and threatens to consume her in 50 days, Joutarou, his grandfather, and their allies must seek out and destroy the immortal vampire responsible for her condition. They must travel halfway across the world to Cairo, Egypt and along the way, do battle with ferocious Stand users set on thwarting them. If Joutarou and his allies fail in their mission, humanity is destined for a grim fate.

Similarity – These animes can unify humor and fights in the best way possible. Well-designed muscles, powerful fights and lots of blood. Also, they are adapted from mangas of the same epoch.

8. Fullmetal Alchemist

Synopsis- Edward Elric, a young, brilliant alchemist, has lost much in his twelve-year life: when he and his brother Alphonse try to resurrect their dead mother through the forbidden act of human transmutation, Edward loses his brother as well as two of his limbs. With his supreme alchemy skills, Edward binds Alphonse’s soul to a large suit of armor.

A year later, Edward, now promoted to the Fullmetal alchemist of the state, embarks on a journey with his younger brother to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone. The fabled mythical object is rumored to be capable of amplifying an alchemist’s abilities by leaps and bounds, thus allowing them to override the fundamental law of alchemy: to gain something, an alchemist must sacrifice something of equal value. Edward hopes to draw into the military’s resources to find the fabled stone and restore his and Alphonse’s bodies to normal. However, the Elric brothers soon discover that there is more to the legendary stone than meets the eye, as they are led to the epicenter of a far darker battle than they could have ever imagined.

Similarity – SHounen, both have a good splash of comedy mixed in with the seriousness of it as well as action sequences that are all different, complex, yet easily understandable. They all hold that rheum of fantasy. And I just find that people who liked DBZ typically like FMA as well.

7. Bleach

BleachSynopsis – Ichigo Kurosaki is an ordinary high schooler—until his family is attacked by a Hollow, a corrupt spirit that seeks to devour human souls. It is then that he meets a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki, who gets injured while protecting Ichigo’s family from the assailant. To save his family, Ichigo accepts Rukia’s offer of taking her powers and becomes a Soul Reaper as a result.

However, as Rukia is unable to regain her powers, Ichigo is given the daunting task of hunting down the Hollows that plague their town. However, he is not alone in his fight, as he is later joined by his friends—classmates Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Uryuu Ishida—who each have their own unique abilities. As Ichigo and his comrades get used to their new duties and support each other on and off the battlefield, the young Soul Reaper soon learns that the Hollows are not the only real threat to the human world.

Similarity – it’s got the fantastic fights that go on for episodes at a time, it has the fantastic plots, defeating enemies ten times stronger than you, losing, then training than winning, the main character always faced with constant challenges, when I watched this, i couldn’t help but think that I hadn’t seen such a good fighting anime since DBZ. though many of the characters are nothing like each other, the style of the anime’s are the same, if you enjoyed DBZ, go for bleach!

6. One Punch Man

One Punch Man
Synopsis – The seemingly ordinary and unimpressive Saitama has a rather unique hobby: being a hero. In order to pursue his childhood dream, he trained relentlessly for three years—and lost all of his hair in the process. Now, Saitama is incredibly powerful, so much so that no enemy is able to defeat him in battle. In fact, all it takes to defeat evildoers with just one punch has led to an unexpected problem—he is no longer able to enjoy the thrill of battling and has become quite bored.

This all changes with the arrival of Genos, a 19-year-old cyborg, who wishes to be Saitama’s disciple after seeing what he is capable of. Genos proposes that the two join the Hero Association in order to become certified heroes that will be recognized for their positive contributions to society, and Saitama, shocked that no one knows who he is, quickly agrees. And thus begins the story of One Punch Man, an action-comedy that follows an eccentric individual who longs to fight strong enemies that can hopefully give him the excitement he once felt and just maybe, he’ll become popular in the process.

Similarity – Both anime feature overpowered characters and are both humorous. All the characters are lovable, the fights are great, and the villains are just as good. The major difference is that OPM is a parody and shouldn’t be taken seriously while DBZ is a more serious show. It’s clear that OPM got inspiration from DBZ.

5. Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter
Synopsis –Hunter x Hunter is set in a world where Hunters exist to perform all manner of dangerous tasks like capturing criminals and bravely searching for lost treasures in uncharted territories. Twelve-year-old Gon Freecss is determined to become the best Hunter possible in hopes of finding his father, who was a Hunter himself and had long ago abandoned his young son. However, Gon soon realizes the path to achieving his goals is far more challenging than he could have ever imagined.

Along the way to becoming an official Hunter, Gon befriends the lively doctor-in-training Leorio, vengeful Kurapika, and rebellious ex-assassin Killua. To attain their own goals and desires, together the four of them take the Hunter Exam, notorious for its low success rate and high probability of death. Throughout their journey, Gon and his friends embark on an adventure that puts them through many hardships and struggles. They will meet a plethora of monsters, creatures, and characters—all while learning what being a Hunter truly means.

Similarity – I recommend Hunter X Hunter is you are a Dragon Ball Z fan for 1 very important reason. The first time I watched this series I couldn’t help but make constant comparisons between Gon Freecs and Goku. They have an especially similar story arc that the anime hasn’t reached yet, but the manga series has finished that reminded me of the Cell arc (I mean, really close in a lot of ways).
Manga aside, Hunter X Hunter feels like a smarter version of Dragon Ball (but with no dragon balls). There are great characters in both, and If you like Dragon Ball then you should like Hunter X Hunter (2011) as well.

4. Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail
Synopsis – In the mystical land of Fiore, magic exists as an essential part of everyday life. Countless magic guilds lie at the core of all magical activity, and serve as venues for like-minded mages to band together and take on job requests. Among them, Fairy Tail stands out from the rest as a place of strength, spirit, and family.

Lucy Heartfilia is a young mage searching for celestial gate keys, and her dream is to become a full-fledged wizard by joining this famous guild. In her search, she runs into Natsu Dragneel and his partner Happy, who are on a quest to find Natsu’s foster father, the dragon Igneel.

Upon being tricked by a man, Lucy falls under an abduction attempt, only to be saved by Natsu. To her shock, he reveals that he is a member of Fairy Tail and invites her to join them. There, Lucy meets the guild’s strange members, such as the ice wizard Gray Fullbuster and magic swordswoman Erza Scarlet. Together as a family, they battle the forces of evil, help those in need, and gain new friends, all the while enjoying the never-ending adventure that is Fairy Tail.

Similarity – These two shounen anime are quite similar. Both are shown to rely heavily on teamwork and friendship, powering through and always coming together as one, and not allowing yourself to get taken down so easily. The main characters are quite similar in a few minor aspects, and the characters from each series are likable to a certain extent. If you like Dragon Ball Z, you should try Fairy Tail, and vice versa.

3. One Piece

one piece
Synopsis – Gol D. Roger was known as the “Pirate King,” the strongest and most infamous being to have sailed the Grand Line. The capture and execution of Roger by the World Government brought a change throughout the world. His last words before his death revealed the existence of the greatest treasure in the world, One Piece. It was this revelation that brought about the Grand Age of Pirates, men who dreamed of finding One Piece—which promises an unlimited amount of riches and fame—and quite possibly the pinnacle of glory and the title of the Pirate King.

Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate ransacking villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder: the thought of an exciting adventure that leads him too intriguing people and ultimately, the promised treasure. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach the most coveted of all fortunes—One Piece.

Similarity – Both the main characters of the shows, Goku and Luffy, are very alike. They both love food, both are insanely strong and they both love their family/friends.
Fighting and overcoming foes are a big part of both shows. And they both have some humor in them.

2. Naruto: Shippuuden

Synopsis – It has been two and a half years since Naruto Uzumaki left Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village, for intense training following events which fueled his desire to be stronger. Now Akatsuki, the mysterious organization of elite rogue ninja, is closing in on their grand plan which may threaten the safety of the entire shinobi world.

Although Naruto is older and sinister events loom on the horizon, he has changed little in personality—still rambunctious and childish—though he is now far more confident and possesses an even greater determination to protect his friends and home. Come whatever may, Naruto will carry on with the fight for what is important to him, even at the expense of his own body, in the continuation of the saga about the boy who wishes to become Hokage.

Similarity – If you like Dragon Ball Z you’ll love Naruto Shippuden. These are both the second part of amazing series. They’re both more high action to their original and go into further depth with the characters and story. The one part I like about Naruto Shippuden over DBZ is that the main character, even though may not get as much screen time, has a tremendously better background and character development.

1. Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files

Synopsis – One fateful day, Yuusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old delinquent with a dim future, gets a miraculous chance to turn it all around when he throws himself in front of a moving car to save a young boy. His ultimate sacrifice is so out of character that the authorities of the spirit realm are not yet prepared to let him pass on. Koenma, heir to the throne of the spirit realm, offers Yuusuke an opportunity to regain his life through completion of a series of tasks. With the guidance of the death god Botan, he is to thwart evil presences on Earth as a Spirit Detective.

To help him on his venture, Yuusuke enlists ex-rival Kazuma Kuwabara, and two demons, Hiei and Kurama, who have criminal pasts. Together, they train and battle against enemies who would threaten humanity’s very existence.

Similarity – If DBZ is the king of fighting anime, then YYH is the prince. Both have incredible characters, faster than the speed of light movement, more energy attacks then you can shake a stick of Pocky at, and more insane battles than you’ll know what to do with.
Now, that said, I recommend checking out the anime before you read the manga, especially if you’re new to otakudom. The YYH has been known to turn off some readers, but the anime is very crisp considering it was animated over ten years ago.
