1. Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary)

10. Switch

Switch
Synopsis – Two newbies at the Narcotic Control Department in Japan, Haru, and Kai, struggle against drug dealers, gangs, murderers, psychopaths, mysterious organizations, and mad people in general. The gentle and caring one of the group, Kai, who has problems of his own, has the tendency of turning into a lethal killing machine in certain scenarios. The way he acts changes like that of a “switch”. As the two do their job, answers to what is behind Kai’s strange behavior and who exactly he is revealed.

Similarity – These two animes have similar genres and plot gimmicks including mind tricks, undercover agents, and unbelievable plot twists — AND they both keep you well at the edge of your seat. The animation between the two series has a similar feel to one another. Furthermore, both shows deal with conspiracies, secrets, and deception. Definitely a good watch!

9. Ergo Proxy

Ergo ProxySynopsis – The world has become largely uninhabitable over the course of time and now what remains of humanity exists inside large dome-like cities. When androids known as AutoReivs begin committing crimes and displaying a semblance of free will Re-L Mayer begins investigating the cause. This takes her on an adventure that encourages her to ask deep philosophical questions about herself, her companions Vincent and Pino, as well as the world they live in.

Similarity – Both series center around a very dark and obscure theme. In Ergo proxy there is a big element of mystery throughout the whole series. A very interesting plot is revealed by watching both anime. They both have strong main characters who fight with concepts rather than brute strength. I truly was touched by the ending and overall beauty they have.

8. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch

Code GeassSynopsis – The Empire of Britannia has invaded Japan using giant robot weapons called Knightmare Frames. Japan is now referred to as Area 11, and its people the 11’s. A Britannian who was living in Japan at the time, Lelouch, vowed to his Japanese friend Suzaku that he’d destroy Britannia. Years later, Lelouch is in high school but regularly skips out of school to go play chess and gamble on himself. One day, he stumbles on terrorists 11’s who’ve stolen a military secret and is caught by a member of the Britannian task force sent after them, who is Suzaku.
As the rest of the squad arrives, Suzaku is shot for disobeying orders, while the military secret, a young girl, gives Lelouch the power of Geass, which makes anyone obey any order. While Suzaku is secretly made the pilot of Britannia’s brand new prototype Knightmare, Lancelot, Lelouch becomes the masked Zero to lead the rebellion to destroy Britannia once and for all.

Similarity – This seems to be a pretty common comparison – probably because Light and Lelouch are practically the same characters. Both shows feature quite a bit more intellectual sparring than your typical shounen fare, and both main characters have very similar personalities (they\’re closer to being villains than heroes) and abilities (ridiculously powerful but with prominent weaknesses that require careful planning to circumvent).

7. Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance)

Zankyou no TerrorSynopsis – Painted in red, the word “VON” is all that is left behind after a terrorist attack on a nuclear facility in Japan. The government is shattered by their inability to act, and the police are left frantically searching for ways to crack down the perpetrators.
The public is clueless—until, six months later, a strange video makes its way onto the internet. In it, two teenage boys who identify themselves only as “Sphinx” directly challenge the police, threatening to cause destruction and mayhem across Tokyo. Unable to stop the mass panic quickly spreading through the city and desperate for any leads in their investigation, the police struggle to act effectively against these terrorists, with Detective Kenjirou Shibazaki caught in the middle of it all.

Similarity – The genius, mass-murdering protagonists aren’t necessarily the “good guys,” and the unorthodox, detective antagonists aren’t necessarily the “bad guys.” Sometimes you’re not really sure who you want to root for. These two anime have a very similar plot. The protagonist makes enemy with the world by doing major crimes. The protagonist play riddle games with the police for them to figure out how the crime had happened.

6. B: The Beginning

B The Beginning
Synopsis – In a world powered by advanced technology, crime and action unfold in the archipelagic nation of Cremona. Koku, the protagonist. Keith, the legendary investigator of the royal police force RIS. A mysterious criminal organization. A wide variety of characters race through the fortified city as it is beset by the serial killer, Killer B, and a chain of crimes.

Similarity – They’re similar in the sense that people are dying in the local area and the cause is unknown to the locals which creates some kind of word of mouth legend. Death Note, the anime is from the killer’s, Kira’s, perspective. The only difference I would say is that Death Note has more aspects of detective work than horror and action.

5. Another

Another
Synopsis – When Kōichi Sasakibara transfers to his new school, he can sense something frightening in the atmosphere of his new class, a secret none of them will talk about. At the center is the beautiful girl Mei Misaki. Kōichi is immediately drawn to her mysterious aura, but then he begins to realize that no one else in the class is aware of her presence.

Similarity – Both are about killing without using hands but in Death Note, the killer is the main but in Another the killer is unknown :> but you shall know at the end in death note they have eyes to see names of other people in Another Misaki has an eye to see the dead people and nearly dead … both are amazing.

4. No Game No Life

No Game No Life
Synopsis – Genius gamer siblings Sora and Shiro are known as the undefeatable “__” (blank). Their talents and skills are so good they are considered as an urban legend. One day, a young boy named Teto appears before them, claiming to be the “God” of another dimension where Sora and Shiro are summoned to, in which no violence is allowed and everything is decided by a game. Of the 16 different races residing in this world, “Humanity” is the weakest. After having the vast majority of their lands captured by the other races and being driven to the brink of extinction, Sora and Shiro challenge these one-of-a-kind battles of the intellectual powers in order to save Humanity.

Similarity – Both main characters are geniuses in their own right. They’re both master planers and have incredible reasoning and deduction skills. While the shows differ in tone, one being dark and serious, and the other light-hearted and carefree. The shows central plot revolves around the achievement of godlike status. Figuratively or literally.

3. Monster

Monster
Synopsis – Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, had it all: incredible skill at his work, a rich and beautiful fiancee, and a promising career at his hospital. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result, he lost the support of the hospital director, as well as his position in the hospital and his fiance.
A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and once again he was catapulted back onto the top. But as the chief suspect of the murders, Tenma did not get an easy life. As a matter of fact, it seems that the boy he saved was much more than he had appeared to be… Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.

Similarity – Monster, and Death Note are unique in many ways. In both cases, the issue of morality in its truest form, that is the frontier between good and evil, is explored via highly tense psychological thrillers. Monster is highly realistic and portrays a very believable world while Death Note has a supernatural element to it; in both the viewer is forced to think and make choices toward deciding who the real villains are and just what it is that makes one individual evil.

2. Psycho-Pass

Psycho Pass

Synopsis – The series takes place in the near future when it is possible to instantaneously measure and quantify a person’s state of mind and personality. This information is recorded and processed, and the term “Psycho-Pass” in the anime’s title refers to a standard used to measure an individual’s being. The story centers around the “enforcement officer” Shinya Kōgami, who is tasked with managing crime in such a world.

Similarity – The series has the same showcase of “Law versus Crime”, the only difference is the themes. In terms of characters Death Note revolves around two Genius students with a different personality and the anti-hero holding a handy-dandy Reaper Notebook while Psycho-Pass revolves between Cops using Advance Techno weapon that has a full duplex psychological inspection that switches the gear from a Neurological paralyzer to Anti-matter shooting bullet and Masterminds that have odd different assassination fetish.

1. Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary)

Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary)Synopsis – Yukiteru (Yuki) Amano is a loner who never really interacts with people and prefers writing a diary on his cell phone, with his only companion being an imaginary friend named Deus Ex Machina, the God of Time and Space. However, Yuki soon learns that Deus is not a figment of his imagination but real when Deus makes him a participant in a battle royale with eleven others. Within this “Diary Game”, the contestants are given special diaries that can predict the future, with each diary having unique features that give it both advantages and disadvantages.

Similarity – Mirai Nikki and Death Note share some similarities with their supernatural elements. In both series, there is a god who makes the rules for the participants. Moreover, both series involve diaries that have to do with fate. Death Note is more on the strategic side while Mirai Nikki is more on the psychological side. Both are recommended for people who enjoy thrillers.
