10. Bounen no Xamdou (Xam’d: Lost Memories)

Bounen no Xamdou (Xam'd Lost Memories)
Synopsis – Sentan Island is a small island surrounded by the Yuden Sea. It exists in a state of dreamlike tranquility, cut off from the war between the Northern Government and the Southern Continent Free Zone. Our hero, Akiyuki Takehara, lives on Sentain Island along with his mother Fusa. He is currently separated from his father, the town doctor Ryuzo, but the bond between father and son remains. One day, after taking Ryuzo the lunch that Fusa has made for him as usual, Akiyuki arrives at school, where he is caught up in an explosion along with his friends, Haru and Furuichi. The explosion produces a mysterious light, which enters Akiyuki’s arm, causing him excruciating pain. He’s given no time to understand it, however, as the white-haired girl who rode on the bus with him guides him to a power, unlike anything he’s ever known.

Similarity – Both have some extraterrestrial like or antagonist to fight against. They both seem to have similar storytelling in which all the details are revealed throughout the series instead of an info dump on the first episode. Really only difference so far is that in Bounen, instead of mechs, its Xam’d.

9. Black Bullet

Black BulletSynopsis – In the year 2021, mankind was defeated by Gastrea, a parasitical virus, and is forced to live within a wall made of Varanium Monoliths, a metal that is able to subdue Gastrea. Soon, the “Cursed Children”, children born with the Gastrea virus who are able to control it—which gives them superhuman abilities—were discovered. Due to the Gastrea virus’ intervention, the Cursed Children could only be female. Civil Securities are formed to specialize in fighting against Gastrea, operating with the pair of an Initiator, who are cursed children, and a Promoter, serving to lead the cursed children. Ten years after the war, Rentarō Satomi, a high school student who is also a Promoter in his childhood friend Kisara Tendō’s Tendō Civil Security, along with his Initator Enju Aihara, receives a secret mission to prevent the Tokyo Area’s destruction.

Similarity – Same male and female team in the same post-war society. Enemies in Darling in the FranXX are “kaiju” similar to Gastrea. The female main character is always an half-human, half-monster like Enju Aihara. Basically the same, with more mecha but same ecchi spirit.

8. Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto

Star Driver Kagayaki no TakutoSynopsis – Deep beneath the surface of Southern Cross Isle, a mysterious organization known as the Glittering Crux Brigade frequently gathers in their underground fortress. The group is particularly interested in “Cybodies,” stone giants which can transform into massive fighting humanoids but only in a realm known as “Zero Time.” By finding and shattering the seals of the island’s four seal maidens, Glittering Crux hopes to break free of Zero Time and use the Cybodies anywhere they please.

Similarity – Not only are they both science-fantasy stories centered around young people piloting large mecha, both Star Driver and Darling in the Franxx share a similar design aesthetic. For one, the mecha piloted by the main characters in each series even look the same; forgoing the boxy Gundam-esque designs for something more sleek and slender.

7. Shinsekai yori (From the New World)

Shinsekai yori (From the New World)Synopsis – In the future Japan has become a fractured country, and small towns now exist. The rulers of this world have the cursed power of Telekinesis. When an incident occurs, 5 children come to realize the world is not as it seems, and learn the bloody history of this world. These 5 children unite and help the world as it falls into a downward spiral of chaos.

Similarity – Darling in the FranXX really reminds me of Shinsekai Yori. Both anime are set in a post-apocalyptic setting, and feature school children in positions of dangers. Both anime also instill a very similar, creepy and mysterious vibe through themselves

6. God Eater

God Eater
Synopsis – The year is 2071. Humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction following the emergence of man-eating monsters called “Aragami” that boast an immunity to conventional weaponry. They ravaged the land, consuming almost everything in their path and leaving nothing in their wake. To combat them, an organization named Fenrir was formed as a last-ditch effort to save humanity through the use of “God Eaters”—special humans infused with Oracle cells, allowing them to wield the God Arc, the only known weapon capable of killing an Aragami. One such God Eater is Lenka Utsugi, a New-Type whose God Arc takes the form of both blade and gun.

Similarity – Both shows center on the somewhat tragic love story. Also, as we go on we find out they are more connected than we realize, and in both shows, memory loss is a significant factor in their respective journeys. Very similar shows indeed once you get into it.

5. Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign)

Owari no Seraph
Synopsis – After an unknown virus wiped out all adults on earth, vampires appeared and ruled over the surviving children, treating them like livestock. Yuichiro Hyakuya survived along with other orphans by giving their blood to vampires, until Yuichiro escaped four years ago. Now he is a member of the Moon Demon Company, a unit in the Japanese army dedicated to hunting down the vampires he blames for the death of his family.

Similarity – Both are set in a post apocalyptic-ish worlds, in which the main group of characters is fighting to save humanity. The characters are also very similar for e.g. Zero Two is quite literally the same person as Shinoa Hiragi

4. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Gurren Lagann)

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Synopsis – Simon, and Kamina were born and raised in a deep, underground village, hidden from the fabled surface. Kamina is a free-spirited loose cannon bent on making a name for himself, while Simon is a timid young boy with no real aspirations. One day while excavating the earth, Simon stumbles upon a mysterious object that turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient artifact of war, which the duo dubs Lagann. Using their new weapon, Simon and Kamina fend off a surprise attack from the surface with the help of Yoko Littner, a hot-blooded redhead wielding a massive gun who wanders the world above.

In the aftermath of the battle, the sky is now in plain view, prompting Simon and Kamina to set off on a journey alongside Yoko to explore the wastelands of the surface. Soon, they join the fight against the “Beastmen,” humanoid creatures that terrorize the remnants of humanity in powerful robots called “Gunmen.” Although they face some challenges and setbacks, the trio bravely fights these new enemies alongside other survivors to reclaim the surface, while slowly unraveling a galaxy-sized mystery.

Similarity – It makes perfect sense that a mecha anime done by Studio Trigger carries the same hallmark traits of the flagship mecha anime of Studio Gainax; the former is the successor of the latter, after all. Everything from the mecha transformation sequences, battle sequences, and character animation are similar. They are also similar in that they are both set in post-apocalyptic versions of Earth where the remains of humanity survive while battling monstrous beings in a giant mech

3. Kiznaiver

Kiznaiver
Synopsis – Katsuhira Agata is a quiet and reserved teenage boy whose sense of pain has all but vanished. His friend, Chidori Takashiro, can only faintly remember the days before Katsuhira had undergone this profound change. Now, his muffled and complacent demeanor makes Katsuhira a constant target for bullies, who exploit him for egregious sums of money. But their fists only just manage to make him blink, as even emotions are far from his grasp.

However, one-day Katsuhira, Chidori, and four other teenagers are abducted and forced to join the Kizuna System as official “Kiznaivers.” Those taking part are connected through pain: if one member is injured, the others will feel an equal amount of agony. These individuals must become the lab rats and scapegoats of an incomplete system designed with world peace in mind. With their fates literally intertwined, the Kiznaivers must expose their true selves to each other, or risk failing much more than just the Kizuna System.

Similarity – You get the same kind of vibes from the main characters. The art is similar, and most importantly the stories can relate heavily. In both anime, the characters in the show are around the same age, and being forced to partake in an experiment that will better society. If you like either one of these shows, do yourself a favor and check out the other one.

2. Eureka Seven

Eureka SevenSynopsis – Renton Thurston is a 14-year-old boy who lived with his mechanic grandfather in a backwater town. Every day he dreamed of being with the mercenary “Light Finding Operation (LFO)” aircraft pilot group “Gekkostate” and riding “Trapar” particle waves– a sport called “reffing”– with their charismatic leader Holland, especially when faced with his father’s acclaimed past or his grandfather’s desire to protect him.
When a young girl named Eureka riding the original LFO, the “Nirvash typeZERO”, asks his grandfather for a tune-up, she inadvertently brings the attention of the military to the garage; as a result, the garage is destroyed and Renton is forced to deliver a new type of interface– the “Amita Drive”– to the Nirvash. After a heated fight in which the Nirvash destroys the military LFOs by unleashing an immense amount of power, Renton is invited into Gekkostate. However, he quickly realizes that behind the facade of a traveling group of mercenaries is a very bitter reality.

Similarity – Similar elements/themes including:
– mecha
– young lovers
– fantastical racism
– large cast
– a council that rules the world

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Synopsis – In 2015, fifteen years after a global cataclysm known as the Second Impact, teenager Shinji Ikari is summoned to the futuristic city of Tokyo-3 by his estranged father Gendo Ikari, director of the special paramilitary force Nerv. Shinji witnesses United Nations forces battling an Angel, one of a race of giant monstrous beings whose awakening was foretold by the Dead Sea Scrolls. Because of the Angels’ near-impenetrable force-fields, Nerv’s giant Evangelion bio-machines, synchronized to the nervous systems of their pilots and possessing their own force-fields, are the only weapons capable of keeping the Angels from annihilating humanity.

Nerv officer Misato Katsuragi escorts Shinji into the Nerv complex beneath the city, where his father pressures him into piloting the Evangelion Unit-01 against the Angel. Without training, Shinji is quickly overwhelmed in the battle, causing the Evangelion to go berserk and savagely kill the Angel on its own.

Similarity – Apart from the downright similarities between the characters of these two series, the world buildup has a striking resemblance. Humanity is constantly being under attack by an eldritch abomination, and to defeat them, kids are trained to pilot giant mecha structures. The protagonist has some sort of issue that prevents him from piloting once such robot. There is a female lead who wears bright red clothes and plays a big part in the mental turmoil of our protagonist.
