10. Karneval

KarnevalSynopsis – While in search of his precious friend, a young boy named Nai falls captive to a beautiful woman, whose looks are matched only by her taste for human flesh. Meanwhile, Gareki, a clever thief, is in the midst of robbing her luxurious home. As she transforms into a ghoulish monster, the boys flee. On the run, Nai and Gareki are found by “Circus,” a government defense agency that deals with criminal activity too difficult for the police to handle and protects civilians from “varuga”—terrible monsters that devour humans for sustenance. In the hope that it will lead Nai to his missing friend, he and Gareki decide to join Circus. On their perilous journey, they face dangerous varuga and begin to uncover the secrets behind a shadowy organization known as Kafka.

Similarity – The feeling of the Bungou Stray Dogs anime feels a lot like Karneval. Also, the main characters are somewhat “naive” and just go with the flow. The art look alike, as well as the plot (two different organizations with quirky characters and superpowers) Lastly, the voice actor of Dazai, is the same as Yogi’s from Karneval. The characters in both anime are lovable and somewhat unique.

9. Akame ga Kill!

Akame ga KillSynopsis – Night Raid is the covert assassination branch of the Revolutionary Army, an uprising assembled to overthrow Prime Minister Honest, whose avarice and greed for power has lead him to take advantage of the child emperor’s inexperience. Without a strong and benevolent leader, the rest of the nation is left to drown in poverty, strife, and ruin. Though the Night Raid members are all experienced killers, they understand that taking lives is far from commendable and that they will likely face retribution as they mercilessly eliminate anyone who stands in the revolution’s way. This merry band of assassins’ newest member is Tatsumi, a naïve boy from a remote village who had embarked on a journey to help his impoverished hometown.

Similarity – Both series involve an MC character that joins a special squad. Each person in the squad has a single, unique skill. Where they differ is in the nature of the squads: the MC joins a special detectives squad in Bungou Stray Dogs while the MC in Akame ga Kill joins a squad of assassins. In both series, the squads face an immensely powerful and cruel group. Neither series holds back on the violence as well.

8. Servamp

ServampSynopsis – Mahiru Shirota firmly believes that simple is best and troublesome things should be avoided at all costs. One day, Mahiru returns home to find something quite strange: a mysterious young man he has never seen before. His subsequent panic results in the uninvited guest being exposed to sunlight and—much to Mahiru’s shock—transforming into Kuro! Upon revealing himself as a mere lazy shut-in vampire, Kuro promises to leave once night falls. However, one disaster after another leads to Mahiru accidentally forming a contract with his new freeloader, dragging him into a life-threatening battle of supernatural servants and bloodthirsty beings that is anything but simple.

Similarity – The powers that the Servamps have are similar to the gifts in BSD, both within the sense of their creativity and uniqueness (as opposed to simple fire/water manipulation, flying, control of nature etc) and the names they have for each person’s power. The characters Mahiru and Atsushi felt similar. They’re both young, objectively naive and is a rather clueless half the time, following a more experienced person around aka Kuro / Dazai

7. Trickster

trickster Synopsis – Kogorou Akechi is the founder of a private investigation firm known as the Boy Detectives’ Club. Together, this group takes on cases both great and small. One of their junior members, Kensuke Hanasaki, is out solving a case one day when he happens upon Yoshio Kobayashi, a mysterious amnesiac boy with an inability to die. After seeing his abilities in action, Kensuke offers Yoshio a deal: join the Boy Detectives’ Club and help them solve cases, and in exchange, he will find a way to help Yoshio die. The apathetic Yoshio accepts this deal begrudgingly, unaware of how different his life will become. Although he does not have much use for people, he gradually begins to acknowledge the group as he spends more time with them while solving cases.

Similarity – A group of teenagers with special powers are in a group, helping people from the city by taking on jobs that such as investigations, bodyguards etc. The main character in both anime has a problem with their self-identity and how their powers are used. They are led by a more experienced and “wiser” mentor. Both shows have a similar atmosphere and pacing as well, being very arc-based. If you enjoy one, it is likely you’ll enjoy the other!

6. Baccano!

baccanoSynopsis – During the early 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality. Merging these events together are the kindhearted would-be thieves, Isaac and Miria, connecting various people, all of them with their own hidden ambitions and agendas, and creating lifelong bonds and consequences for everyone involved.

Similarity – A group of misfit supernaturals wherein the mafia gets involved and death and staying dead are pretty much plot devices played with. A large cast with all kinds of fun tropes, and a similar aesthetic as far as clothing and the scenery goes. You get these two gems Baccano! and Bungou Stray Dogs.

5. Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens

Hakata Tonkotsu RamensSynopsis – Although the city of Fukuoka might look relatively peaceful at first glance, in actuality it houses a thriving mixture of dangerous individuals such as killers, detectives, and professional revenge seekers right beneath its surface. Among their number is Zenji Banba, a laidback and observant detective who is investigating the work of other hitmen companies in the area. However, Banba might not be the only one with a bone to pick with these organizations, as Xianming Ling, a crossdressing male hitman in the employ of one such company begins getting fed up with his lack of jobs and pay.

Similarity – Both involve a mafia-like organisation: Bungou has the Port Mafia and Ramens has the Kakyuu Group and the Murder Inc
– diverse cast of characters
– elaborate connections between them
– MCS have mysterious past/hidden identities
– gang/mafia and various organizations
– many well-known seiyuus

4. Taboo Tattoo

Taboo TattooSynopsis – Seigi, a martial arts trained middle schooler, often feels driven to protect the weaker people around him. One day, he defends a homeless man against some punks, and the man gives him a strange tattoo on his palm in return. The tattoo is a secret weapon produced in the arms race between America and the Serinistan Kingdom. Seigi finds himself in over his head when a powerful girl, using the same secret weapon, violently pursues him in order to retrieve it. His skill at martial arts may not be enough to keep him alive, but will he be able to learn how to trigger the power of his tattoo in time?

Similarity – Both anime are tagged as Supernatural, Comedy, and Action.BSD’s main character Atsushi has one of the most wanted superpowers just like Seigi in Taboo Tattoo. Although the supporting characters are really different, the MCs are almost the same: both had a sorrowful past and both are trying to get stronger, since the lives of the ones they love may be in danger. Both shows share some strange comedy and pretty much the same course of action

3. K-Project

K-ProjectSynopsis – Ashinaka High School is known for its unique setting: the entire campus is built on an island. Yashiro Isana, aka Shiro, is having lunch with a cat on one of the school rooftops. After his lunch break, Shiro goes on an errand for his classmate Kukuri to prepare for their upcoming school festival, only to be chased by some intimidating-looking men. After a video depicting the heinous murder of a Red Clansman spreads virally, the unassuming student Yashiro Isana is accused of homicide. Now, a manhunt is underway for his head, bringing him into contact with the infamous “Black Dog” Kurou Yatogami—a skilled swordsman and martial artist determined to follow the wishes of his late master, the Seventh King.

Similarity – The relationship between the Reds-Blues and the Armed Detective Agency-Port Mafia are similar. Both, while trying to defeat the other, don’t show decisive action to finish the other. Both include a character who has switched from the more violent group to the more policing group. Of course, the powers people have are completely different, both anime are worth watching

2. (Blood Blockade Battlefront) Kekkai Sensen

Libra is a secret organization composed of eccentrics and superhumans, tasked with keeping order in the city and making sure that chaos doesn’t spread to the rest of the world.

Similarity – Both series have the same comedy-drama mixed atmosphere and the characters are pretty similar too. In both anime, a young boy joins an organization where everyone has a superpower. More than just your typical detective series, the mixture of excellent action scenes and fine comedy followed by a robust storyline is not only eye-catching but worthy of attention.

1. Hamatora The Animation

Hamatora The AnimationSynopsis – The ability to create miracles is not just a supernatural phenomenon; it is a gift which manifests in a limited number of human beings. “Minimum,” or small miracles, are special powers that only selected people called “Minimum Holders” possess. The detective agency Yokohama Troubleshooting, or Hamatora for short, is composed of the “Minimum Holder PI Duo,” Nice and Murasaki. Their office is table at Cafe Nowhere, where the pair and their coworkers await new clients. Suddenly, the jobs that they begin to receive seem to have strange connections to the serial killer whom their friend Art, a police officer, is searching for. The murder victims share a single similarity: they are all Minimum Holders.

Similarity – Both series involve detective agencies with people who have extraordinary abilities. There’s a certain similarity in tone. In dealing with people who are prejudiced against those with power balanced against the humor of these wildly different personalities working together. Small twists in the stories keep you interested, even if you know they will solve the mystery at the end of the episode or two. A fan of one would almost certainly enjoy the other as well.
