10. Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter
Synopsis – Twelve-year-old Gon Freecss one day discovers that the father he had always been told was dead was alive and well. His Father, Ging, is a Hunter—a member of society’s elite with a license to go anywhere or do almost anything. Gon, determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, decides to take the Hunter Examination and eventually find his father to prove himself as a Hunter in his own right. But on the way, he learns that there is more to becoming a Hunter than previously thought, and the challenges that he must face are considered the toughest in the world.

Similarity – Shounen series with overbearingly comedic character designs and archetypal characters that are often misconstrued as brooding, dark, and realistic due to the “mature themes” like a death in them. Both Akame ga kill and HxH are wonderful action adventure animes also they have very interesting main characters.

9. Black Bullet

Black Bullet Synopsis – In the year 2021, mankind was defeated by Gastrea, a parasitical virus, and is forced to live within a wall made of Varanium Monoliths, a metal that is able to subdue Gastrea. Soon, the “Cursed Children”, children born with the Gastrea virus who are able to control it—which gives them superhuman abilities—were discovered.
Due to the Gastrea virus’ intervention, the Cursed Children could only be female. Civil Securities are formed to specialize in fighting against Gastrea, operating with the pair of an Initiator, who are cursed children, and a Promoter, serving to lead the cursed children. Ten years after the war, Rentarō Satomi, a high school student who is also a Promoter in his childhood friend Kisara Tendō’s Tendō Civil Security, along with his Initator Enju Aihara, receives a secret mission to prevent the Tokyo Area’s destruction.

Similarity – Thrilling and cruel heroic-action shows, where cool boys and young girls with powers, have to defend their own world from monsters and corrupted system. Very dangerous and deadly tasks await them.

8. Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign)

Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign)Synopsis – After an unknown virus wiped out all adults on earth, vampires appeared and ruled over the surviving children, treating them like livestock. Yuichiro Hyakuya survived along with other orphans by giving their blood to vampires, until Yuichiro escaped four years ago. Now he is a member of the Moon Demon Company, a unit in the Japanese army dedicated to hunting down the vampires he blames for the death of his family.

Similarity – Owari no Seraph and Akame ga Kill! are two shows featuring a colorful cast of characters and themes of tragedy and revenge can be found in their stories. There are two sides in each series that fight against each other, and the main character joined the ‘good’ side with great hatred for the other side (more for Owari no Seraph). Special types of weapons and skills are also involved in their fights.

7. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

Shingeki no Kyojin or Attack on TitanSynopsis – Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by enclosing themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants.
Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind.

Similarity – Both animes are based in a historical setting. They are both quite graphic, and both have a very similar look in terms of the setting (eg. the look of the cities, how they’re both surrounded by walls, etc…). Both have a group of characters fighting their enemies, though AgK has a bit more of a medieval look overall. They also both contain shocking (frequently graphic) scenes that are often completely unexpected.

6. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch

Code Geass
Synopsis – In the year 2010, the Holy Empire of Britannia is establishing itself as a dominant military nation, starting with the conquest of Japan. Renamed to Area 11 after its swift defeat, Japan has seen significant resistance against these tyrants in an attempt to regain independence.

Lelouch Lamperouge, exiled prince of Britannia, unfortunately, finds himself caught in a crossfire between the two nations’ armed forces. He is able to escape, however, thanks to the timely appearance of a mysterious girl named C.C., who bestows upon him Geass, the “Power of Kings.” Realizing the vast potential of his newfound “power of absolute obedience,” Lelouch embarks upon a perilous journey as the masked vigilante known as Zero, leading a merciless onslaught against Britannia in order to get revenge once and for all.

Similarity – The two worlds have similar tragedies but they’re different enough to keep the stories separate and interesting. The action scenes are incredible!! Well-suited characters follow a well-planned story.
The element that makes Code Geass better than AgK is the setting: the real-world. Evidently, I find interpretations of our future much more interesting than a fictional world and I’m sure you will too. I HIGHLY recommend Code Geass if you’re looking for a similar, but much better, show to AgK

5. Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

Re Zero
Synopsis – Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favor, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.

Similarity – Akame ga Kill!, and Re:Zero are both fantasy shows done by studio White Fox. Each show has some bloody death scenes. I would say that overall, Akame ga Kill! is more violent, but that does not make it better. In fact, I think Akame ga Kill is a fairly OK show, and I am actually enjoying Re:Zero.

4. Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins)

Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins)
Synopsis – In a world where humans and non-humans have not yet been separated, the kingdom of Leones is protected by the Holy Knights, powerful magic users both revered and feared by the people. Supposedly the strongest, most fearsome of these knights, the Seven Deadly Sins, betrayed the kingdom and made enemies of all the other knights. Queen Elizabeth doesn’t believe this story, and sets out to find the Sins – but when she meets the first Sin at a tavern, his name is Melodias, and he’s nothing but a boy in charge of the pigs.

Similarity – Tatsumi, and Elizabeth set off an adventure. Night Raid (NR) and Nanatsu no Taizai ( Seven Deadly Sins ) are portrayed as villains. But in reality are the good guys who face off against the corrupted rulers. Both Night Raid and Seven Deadly Sins have unique members who wield awesome powers and have a unique personality.

3. Kill la Kill

Kill la Kill
Synopsis – Ryuuko Matoi carries a large weapon shaped like half of a pair of scissors. She’s looking for the woman with the other half, who killed her father. Satsuki Kiryuuin, student council president of Honnouji Academy, is said to know the woman’s identity, so Ryuuko transfers there. Those who arrive at the school receive a special “goku uniform”, and Satsuki has used that power to rule the school in fear.

Similarity – ELITE GROUPS + WEAPONS: The “Goku uniform” in Kill la Kill and “imperial arms” in Akame ga Kill both plays a central role in the overall plot of the stories. Both animes have a high level of action, great humor, plot twists, and unique complex characters.

2. Black Lagoon

Anime Like 91 DaysSynopsis – Okajima Rokuro is a Japanese businessman…in a town full of Japanese businessmen. His normal day consists of social drinking with clients and being kicked around by his bosses. He finally gets a break though, as he’s sent by his company to the tropical seas of Eastern China to deliver a disc…only his boat gets hijacked by a band of mercenaries that were hired to steal it. “Rock” (as he is newly dubbed by his captors) catches the interest of the only female merc “Revy” as she thinks he’s worth a ransom, taking him hostage.
However, the disc turns out to be more trouble than its worth and complicates things both for Rock, and the mercenaries known as Black Lagoon.

Similarity – A boy joins a badass team of wanted killers, who works in the shadows against various evil forces and villains. They will run very dangerous tasks, with crazy people and epic moments. Really violent and cruel shows. Plus lots of Hardcore females committing brazen acts of murder.

When part of her special organ – “the red child” – is transplanted into Kaneki, he becomes a ghoul himself, trapped in a warped world where humans are not the top of the food chain.

Similarity – The main characters of both these anime and up in an organization without wanting it in the first place. They get caught up in a fight they didn’t want to fight but have no choice left. If you like anime with a lot of action and good fight scenes, then these anime are just perfect for you
