10. The Mystic Archives of Dantalian

Synopsis – Hugh Anthony Disward inherits an old mansion and a personal library from his grandfather. In the basement of the mansion, he meets a mysterious girl—Dalian. She is a Dantalian and a gateway to “Dantalian’s bookshelf”, which stores the prohibited books of the demons.

Similarity –Cute little girl = magic book directory; she’s in the care of a male who doesn’t know much about ‘that sort of thing’ but accepts his new lifestyle.

The above is the most important element of both series’s, however the similarities end there…
Dantalian features the two amines traveling together, meeting unusual people and solving obscure mysteries.
‘Index is an action series which features a case of familiar shounen character types.

9. Unlimited Psychic Squad

Synopsis – Kyousuke Hyoubu, an ESPer who was betrayed many years ago, is now one of the most powerful ESPers—and also a fugitive. However, behind that glare lies a kind heart. His main mission is to save ESPers who are mistreated by humans, even if that be by force. Through his methods, he has saved many ESPer lives and gained the loyalty of those he has saved. The name of his group: P.A.N.D.R.A.

Similarity –Both series features the theme of espers who inherits supernatural abilities in a city like setting. There seems to be drama, action, and some comedy presented in both series. Zettai Karen Children: The Unlimited – Hyoubu Kyousuke has a more serious feeling with Index maintains more of a lighthearted atmosphere. However, both series explores the idea of espers and their powers.

8. Bakemonogatari

BakemonogatariSynopsis- Although there are still traces of the brief period he became a vampire, third-year high school student Koyomi Araragi is human again. He happens upon others with their own supernatural problems and finds that he can empathize. Koyomi becomes involved in their lives, seeking to help them and occasionally asking for advice from Meme Oshino, the homeless man who helped him become human again.

Similarity – The strongest resemblance between the two reside in the fashion in which the protagonist build his harem, literally through throwing their lives away to save girls who they just met. Both MCs, though without strong ability power, have a strong sense of justice that can not be swayed no matter what. Of course, the main girl in each arc inevitably end up falling in love with our hero.

Furthermore, these anime both revolve around supernatural occurrences. While Toaru is based on more of a magic vs. science world, Bakemonogatari is a reinvention of Japanese myths.

7. Is This a Zombie?

Kore wa Zombie Desu kaSynopsis – Not every zombie is the monstrous, brain-eating type.

One night while walking home from the convenience store, regular high school boy Ayumu Aikawa is killed by a serial killer, and is just as suddenly brought back to life by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe. One small caveat: he’s now a zombie. Things get even weirder for him when he accidentally steals a magical girl’s uniform, and thus her powers! Haruna, the ex-magical girl, orders him to fight evil creatures known as Megalo in her place until they can figure out a way to get her powers back to her.

It seems that life is just going to get stranger and stranger for poor Ayumu from here on out in Kore wa Zombie desu ka?.

Similarity – They both operate on the premise of being an action/drama, but have a lot of comedy moments thrown in (More in the case of Kore wa Zombie—). The main characters both end up with a harem, have some form of ability to absorb magic, and are both “average guys”. The first female characters introduced in each series also have incredible magic powers, but are unable to use them unless the situation is dire. They also have some parallels in appearance.

6. Problem children are coming from another world, aren’t they?

Anime Like Problem children are coming from another world, aren't they?
Synopsis – Izayoi Sakamaki, Asuka Kudou, and You Kasukabe are extraordinary teenagers who are blessed with psychic powers but completely fed up with their disproportionately mundane lives—until, unexpectedly, each of them receives a strange envelope containing an invitation to a mysterious place known as Little Garden.

Inexplicably dropped into a vast new world, the trio is greeted by Kurousagi, who explains that they have been given a once-in-a-lifetime chance to participate in special high-stakes games using their abilities. In order to take part, however, they must first join a community. Learning that Kurousagi’s community “No Names” has lost its official status and bountiful land due to their defeat at the hands of a demon lord, the group sets off to help reclaim their new home’s dignity, eager to protect its residents and explore the excitement that Little Garden has to offer.

Similarity – Both protagonists are good at hand-to-hand combat, have OP powers (Touma can override spells and esper powers and Izayoi destroy gifts).
Both animes present parts a little confused (Index with the religion and Mondaiji with the mythology) but nothing that hinders its fun.

5. Durarara!!

Synopsis –In Tokyo’s downtown district of Ikebukuro, amidst many strange rumors and warnings of anonymous gangs and dangerous occupants, one urban legend stands out above the rest—the existence of a headless “Black Rider” who is said to be seen driving a jet-black motorcycle through the city streets.

Mikado Ryuugamine has always longed for the excitement of the city life, and an invitation from a childhood friend convinces him to move to Tokyo. Witnessing the Black Rider on his first day in the city, his wishes already seem to have been granted. But as supernatural events begin to occur, ordinary citizens like himself, along with Ikebukuro’s most colorful inhabitants, are mixed up in the commotion breaking out in their city.

Similarity – Both anime show us story about big city life. There are few organizations fighting with each other and on the other side we can see daily routine of quite untypical teenagers. Both series have a large number of heroes. Each of them has its own personality, individual traits, habits and vices. Their fate is often intertwined with each other, complicating the whole story-line. Consummate sociologist will definitely find himself in both stories. However, the plot in Durarara!! is conducted in more mature way.

4. Guilty Crown

Synopsis – Shu’s entire world was shattered after a meteorite crashed into Japan, unleashing the lethal Apocalypse Virus. The chaos and anarchy born of the outbreak cost Shu his family and reduced him to a timid, fearful shell of the boy he’d once been. His life took another unexpected turn after a chance encounter with the stunning pop star, Inori. This mysterious beauty introduced Shu to the King’s Right Hand: a genetic mutation that allows him to reach into hearts of mortals and turn them into weapons. Shu finds himself caught in the crossfire between those who desperately seek his newfound strength. On one side lurks a clandestine government agency, and on the other, Inori and the spirited band of rebels known as Funeral Parlour. The choice is Shu’s to make – and the world is his to change.

Similarity – A boy meets a special girl and finds himself dragged into a world of danger that he previously didn’t know existed. Both boys, Touma and Shu, find themselves fighting against an enemy to protect something. Great art, great characters, great music.
Both worlds have a similar feel that draws you in. As they say: “when science and magic meet… They will beat the crap out of you.”
Although I’m not sure if there’s magic in Guilty Crown yet.

3. The Irregular at Magic High School

anime school uniform
Synopsis – In the dawn of the 21st century, magic, long thought to be folklore and fairy tales, has become a systematized technology and is taught as a technical skill. In First High School, the institution for magicians, students are segregated into two groups based on their entrance exam scores: “Blooms,” those who receive high scores, are assigned to the First Course, while “Weeds” are reserve students assigned to the Second Course.

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei follows the siblings, Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, who are enrolled in First High School. Upon taking the exam, the prodigious Miyuki is placed in the First Course, while Tatsuya is relegated to the Second Course. Though his practical test scores and status as a “Weed” show him to be magically inept, he possesses extraordinary technical knowledge, physical combat capabilities, and unique magic techniques—making Tatsuya the irregular at a magical high school.

Similarity – Both Mahouka and Index feature a world of science and magic with seemingly “weak” male main character who display their true strength by disabling the abilities of their opponents. Tatsuya definitely becomes a lot more overpowered as he reveals more of his abilities throughout the season though. On the other hand, Touma only has his Imagine Breaker but he occasionally finds novel ways of using his ability that help to keep the action going.

2. Shakugan no Shana

Synopsis – Sakai Yuuji, a high school student who expected his normal life to last forever, is dead. When he was on his way home he witnessed a shocking view as the world suddenly froze: people were engulfed by blue flames and a monster resembling a large doll swallowed them. Just as the monster prepared to consume Yuuji, a sword-wielding girl in black attire with flaming red eyes and hair that burns like embers saved him from the monster. The girl called herself a “Flame Haze” who hunts the “Guze no Tomogara”, creatures from another world. As Yuuji noticed a blue flame in his chest, she called him a “Torch”, a temporary replacement, saying that the “real” Yuuji’s existence had already ended. Unfazed, Yuuji befriended the strange girl, named her “Shana”, and joined her fight against Tomogara and other Flame Hazes.

Similarity – Want some anime with some supernatural or magical elements to them? Fear not, as Toaru Majutsu no Index and Shakugan no Shana will satisfy your needs. Both shows are produced by the studio J.C. Staff and have similar set-ups. In both shows you have an average main character with overwhelming potential and a strong, powerful female co-lead. Plots don’t deviate much from each other either, as characters in both shows have to fight against some entity that is much more powerful than them
