In both films, there features a young main male protagonist who seemingly forms a romantic relationship with the female protagonist. The mood is calm with a lighthearted atmosphere. At the same time, they bond through connections.
The visuals/artwork in both series is also absolutely stunning.

Nagamine Mikako and Terao Noboru are junior high school students. However, while Noboru will be entering senior high next winter, Mikako is selected to join the space expedition.

Similarity – They are both made by the same director, Makoto Shinkai. And I must say, they have incredibly similar themes. Not in subject matter but they both concern themselves with matters of the heart and the distance between humans. One is a force separation while the other is a gradual drifting apart. If you like anime that makes you think, watch these two.

1. The Place Promised in Our Early Days

romance anime moviesSynopsis – In an alternate timeline, Japan was divided after losing World War II: Hokkaido was annexed by “Union” while Honshu and other southern islands were under US sovereignty. A gigantic yet mysterious tower was constructed at Hokkaido and could be seen clearly from Aomori (the northernmost prefecture of Honshu) across Tsugaru Strait. In the summer of 1996, three 9th-graders had made a promise that one day they’ll build an aircraft and unravel the tower’s mystery, but their project was abandoned after the girl, Sayuri Sawatari, began experiencing sleeping sickness and transferred to Tokyo for better treatment. Three years later, Hiroki Fujisawa accidentally found out that Sayuri had been in coma since then, and he asked Takuya Shirakawa to help him finding a way to revive her. What they don’t know yet is that Sayuri’s unconsciousness is somehow linked with secrets of the tower and the world.

Similarity – Both movies are similar in many aspects. Both are slice-of-life-ish (though The Place Promised strays from that path a few times), and the main characters are two childhood friends, a boy and a girl who have been separated for a long time. They have a distinct feeling of calmness to them, similar character designs as well as gorgeous art and animation. Both are directed by Makoto Shinkai, which is more than likely the reason for this similarity.
